Decided to go back and retexture my city. Also decided to remodel a few things, and fix a few errors. This is just one of the piers im retexturing. Still got a few more to go. Poly count is 350,000. More than likely, by the time I get finished with these new "fixes", the poly count should be upwards of 4 million. More to come later.

Been working on the main center tower some more. Got a few more things to do, and then ive got to work on fixing the shaders and textures.
By the way, if any mods are viewing this, did our attachment limit go down? Ive noticed that uploading only 2 pictures seems to take up more room then previously.

sweet!
do you know how many polys were in the *first* atlantis mesh?
Vilandra
11th Jun 2006, 22:11
Yes. The original atlantis model was alittle over 4 million, and used about a gigabyte of textures. Mine so far is only using around 40 MB's of textures.
Dallidas
11th Jun 2006, 23:55
i thought it was 2gb of textures, or maybe that was the second one.
Vilandra

This render is just a test for my haze shader im making. There is no antialiasing in this, or a floor. Just the city, sky, and haze.

I might, but I think that would require some volumetric lights. I'll have to give it a try later. Remember, im still using my old laptop.. 466 Mhz, 160 MB RAM, 2 MB integrated graphics....

WOW......just....wow... i cant believe you've got that many polys goin with such a ......."smal" comp ( abousolutely no offense ment, ur amazing) my comp isnt much better and it STILL has problems with not having enough memory and what not. im runnin on 600 MHz, 256 ram, and my pics still turn out like crap with no detail. Ive been using C4D for about a year and i still cant make pics like that. so yet again, WOW, great talent.

Heres a little update on the city. Its been undergoing a make-over. Ive retextured just about everything with higher res textures. Got 2 more piers to retexture, and remodel a few things, then ill have to put all the peices together.
Vilandra
6th Aug 2006, 16:51
Heres another higher res render. Most of the modeling is done. Right now im having problems finding the right settings for material specular, and trying to come up with a good light rig for this is a pain.
SGA-3D
6th Aug 2006, 17:58
Really cool work Vilandra! I suggest upping the gloss level slightly, so that the bright specular area is only a certain size, but not too much that it looks like plastic.

Yes, Progeny had some excellent angles of the cityship. I had not realized the central spire was "detached" from the rest of the city like that.

Thanks for the caps. Looks like ive got my work cut out for me with the bottom. By the time this thing is done, it will probably be over 3 million polys. Ive seriously got to cut down on the poly count. Its getting out of control.

Its been a while since ive posted any updates. Ive been working on a few other projects, but I recently started working on the city again. Here is my latest rendering. Once I add the ocean, it will be done. Then ill render out an animation with it.
And to clearify, I have no plans to release this model. However, I am thinking about releasing my old one to a few certain individuals who have helped me in the past.
The animation will be coming soon.

Did anyone else catch the major visual goofs? Like how in one shot it shows the central tower being diamond shaped, then in another its a hexagon like Atlantis. And how the piers have large sections cut out when viewed from above, but then they're filled in for the engine shots. Just my 2 cents. And where's your grass. Cerberus?
Cerberus
28th Sep 2006, 15:08
My grass is the green stuff on the the peirs. THere are some browner sections like paths or somthing. And I am so glad its not just me that doesn't understand the actual shape of atlantis. Especially when you look at the schematics on the show and compare them to the show model... there's like 3 different versions of atlantis.

well there are atleast 2 different models. this seasons model is different than season 1's model. I think they use 2 GXF studios so i think they each have there own version.
as for the goofs, i too noticed them, BUT they only appear when its in the water. So the cut outs could be filled with water, hiding the engine sections. Probably wrong though

Is there any chance of a texture release? I'm just saying that cuz I have a really low poly Atlantis for a comp game and am in need of textures.
As for different city ships, isn't Atlantis the origional, so the other ones in Pegasus could be a newer design or something like that...
Endeavour

The time that I really noticed the cutouts was when Asuras was taking off, so the cutouts are there for more than just the water. Don't you just love it when they use multiple models that are all different?

I think after a little research, the two city versions were done by Rainmaker (definitely) and Atmosphere Visual Effects (who do a lot of BSG's effects). Atmosphere did the Asuras city shots until the city took off. Rainmaker's then appeared with the underside shot of it leaving the atmosphere. I just ignore the goofs. The effects in that episode were incredible, and really showed off the city well. They would have had to have used 2 vendors in order to get the amount of new shots of the city that they needed.

I can not figure out where the Daedalus lands when it comes to Atlantis. I know that it lands on the outer parts of one of the arms. Does anyone know what part of the out arms that it lands on (either an open patch of the hexagon on the tip of one of the arms that kind of looks like a landing pad)?
It lands on the water between the arms.

3. Im taking it back in for another over-haul (mostly new textures)
4. If I release it, then everyone will want it, and theres always someone that will claim it as their own.

Im also going back and adding more detail to certain areas. I havent made any animations of the city in a long time, so here is a quick test I did earlier today. Thanks!
The previous version was 2.3 million poly's. From a distance off, it looked great, but up close, you could tell it needed a lot of work if I was planning on doing any closeups, so ive been replacing towers and buildings with new ones that have more detail and are more suitable for closeups.
I dont know what the poly count is right now. Ive got the entire city broken up in about 10 different sections. My current desktop cannot handle the complete city.... but I should have my new workstation this coming Monday or Tuesday!

My new workstation arrived yesterday. What a huge improvement. Just to see what it would do, I rendered a short Atlantis animation using my old city (from a couple years ago). On my old desktop, it was going to take roughly 50 hours to render this short animation, however with my new machine, it only took 1 hour.
Keep in mind, this is my old city. Its not the one im working on now.

23rd Oct 2008, 16:28
here's a question that some of you may want to hit me for, but my only defense is that i honestly dont know and aren't a modeller myself - what makes the quadro better for doing 3d modelling than the geforce and vice-versa with games? always wondered that - i just had the idea "a graphics card is a graphics card, they're all the same cept some can do more than others hence 'faster' at doing the same thing as the older ones".
And yes, with the final thing, Slam in a PJ doing what shep did in "The Return" - dodging between buildings :D
Vilandra
30th Oct 2008, 04:45
@Alex, The Quadro cards are for pre-rendered stuff, and the GeForce cards are for post rendered stuff like games. Both can do 3D and gaming, but the Quadro's are designed to handle polys and CAD work.... to be honest, I think it has something to do with the drivers.
Heres an update on the city. Ive been busy lately so I havent done much.
Davide_sd

The main difference beetwen quadro and geforce cards are drivers. Both cards have basically the same hardware, but the quadro have different driver that allow those card to work in cad....

Yeah, it's AWESOME, but the opening with the railings, compared to the buildings which are closer to our point of view, are MUCH bigger than the buildings. If we are going to fit through the opening with the rail, we won't fit into the buildings, if we fit in the buildings, those rails are so tall they're unnecessary. Anyway, I do LOVE this model :D

Yes, the railing was a little off scale, but I have fixed it..... and added a person so you can see the scale. Most of whats in these last few renders are things ive made up. There are not any close up shots of these areas, so I had to be creative. :(

Vilandra
15th Jan 2009, 19:56
@hoktar, yes, its the VRay bridge for Cinema 4D, however I only have the 32-bit version, and using it with the full model will not render completely because I run out of memory. It looks like I may have to look into upgrading to the new version that is 64-bit compatible so I can use it in XP64.
Here is the latest. Poly count will soon hit 2.9 million. Im just adding more detail at this point. :D It only took 55 seconds to render this HD image, so im sure an animation at a lower quality is doable. :thumb:

My Atlantis has been temporarily put on hold. I was hired by a local studio and now I have little time to work on my own projects.
However..... I recently made a quick 5 second animation of my Atlantis.

Yeah, 20 hours is a bit much, but I had global illumination turned on using Cinema 4D's "sky sampler". That is probably one reason why.
The sky can be easily done in C4D. I have a few panoramic 360° images that ill use. The ocean is going to be the hardest part. The main problem is creating a realistic material, with a properly blended horizon with slight haze.
I'll be experimenting with it some more when I get some time.

Just a little bit of a test. We just got the new VRay plugin for Cinema 4D (VRayforC4D) and I wanted to see how well it would work with my Atlantis model.
Unfortunately, VRay has its own material, so ive got to find some time to convert all my standard C4D material over to VRay. But in the meantime, heres a high res shot of the city untextured with a sun and physical sky.... and a somewhat quick and rough water material.
