View Full Version : 3D Ebon Hawk

I actually started this a while back, but I thought I might try to finish it. It's the Ebon Hawk from the Knights of the Old Republic games. I looked on the internet, but I don't believe anyone has ever really gotten very far on a mesh of this ship. Why is it called the Ebon Hawk if it's really orange and white?
Gilmour

Very nice but if I may say the engines are a tad too close together... at least from how i remember the ship.

I like this ship :D

9th Jun 2006, 22:24
Yes, Gilmour, thanks for pointing that out. I had the shape of the stocks of the engines wrong, and the engines overall were a little small. I've fixed this, and also added the guns on the top. I'm not sure what approach to take on the texturing.

Looks like that site doesn't allow deep links. Here is the StarWars.com databank entry. (http://www.starwars.com/databank/starship/ebonhawk/index.html) The model used in the cutscenes is a little different from the in-game one, so I'm mostly using the in-game model for reference.

Yeah that looks indeed a bit better. Don't mean to be a pedantic ninny, but when you've spend half a year enjoying a game over and over you kinda get a good memory of what the ship looks like.
Beautiful stuff dude anyhow.:thumb:

Is that cause there's a lack of reference for one rather than the other or simply preference for one over the other?
Moreover I'll add something here, because I don't wanna post some more and get accused of "spammage", but it's always interesting to note that the term ebon hawk would mean black hawk in fact. As ebon is meaning to be a very dark black. That is unless I have been lied to by Oxford.

Both. The Game model actually seems to be more detailed as far as the mesh itself goes.

DUDE this is sweet I love it... the ebon hawk was a nice star wars-ish ship, and This wip is very original nothing like it so far, keep it up!

I'd like to get the basic shape done first, then I'll probably go back and add details. I'd like to model as much of the details as possible, vs. texturing them on, eventually. Hadn't thought about the interior, I think I'll just do the outside for starters.
Smeagol
10th Jun 2006, 05:52
And another update...It doesn't really look much different I guess, but I've cleaned up the vertices a lot, it's much easier to work with now. I've done some additional work on the engines, and modeled some of the panels onto the main hull.

I have the game but it is in the attic  - that area is set back about 1/3 from the opposite side and is flat - I will try to dig game out and get a few shots of the ship

Thanks. I know from a bird's eye view shot of the ship what the shape is, but I'm not sure what kind of greebling it has there. I've been replaying the game (on x-box though) so when I get the ship into a docking bay I'll be able to walk around it for some good reference.

It is good, better than the one from the game, but it's not that hard. That's why I suggest you shouldn't stick too much to the reference, because the model from game and cutscene is so little detailed. Forget these panel textures and make them with real geometries

Nice Ebon Hawk, maybe you might want to check this scratchbuilt model out:

Thanks for all the feedback and suggestions. The plating texture right now is just temporary, to give it the right look. I guess I could have just kept as a bare, textureless model until the modelling was all done, but I thought it would be cool to have some textures. I've already modelled on a lot more of the plating than is actually on the mesh used in the game, and I'll probably, eventually, replace most of the greebles with modelled stuff as well. I haven't really started on the texturing yet, I just made the parts that are predominately orange on the ship orange as a point of reference. I haven't paid much attention to the underside of the ship, but I have some good references for that too now so I'm going to work on getting that right.

Here is a closeup of some of the panelling on the "nose." I've also UV-mapped the nose to add the white plating. So far I've only plated the top of the nose and some large plating on the back, but I plan to do this to the entire ship.

Just finished TSL. This looks perfect. Plan on making an interior for this puppy? ;)
Smeagol
13th Jun 2006, 00:27
TSL was good, other than the ending, of course. I doubt I'll do an interior, as it's quite large, but I may eventually. I might a little bit of the main cockpit, which would be visible through the window. The whole interior would be a pretty huge undertaking, and this is my first time modelling anything like this. Before this, the most detailed model I'd ever made was the Nautilus, which I used in a few images in the gallery. (http://www.scifi-meshes.com/gallery/data/500/blackstreamweb.jpg) This is actually the first time I've built a detailed model based on a preexisting reference.

Wow, this is looking good, The Ebon Hawk is probably one of my fav EU ships * The outrider is top *
I really do wonder if it is faster than the MF...
And don't get me started on the end scene of KOTOR II where they cut scene is entitled ' Death of the Ebon Hawk' and looky there it is at the end of the game.
Its unknown if we will see this ship in KOTOR 3

Here is a small update. I found that in the HDRI renders a lot of the details weren't showing up very clearly, so this is just raytraced. Sorry about the bad lighting setup. I've started detailing the main hull with plating, it's taking a while as I'm not just making it up, I'm actually basing the plating on the plating textures they used on the in-game model. I've also got a very basic underside for the ship now. Thanks for all the feedback. I'm not sure how to go about making this thing look dirty and old when the time comes.

Smeagol
9th Jul 2006, 05:44
I've done some work on the texturing to make it look a bit dirty. I won't start with the really intricate stuff (worn off paint on the edges, that sort of thing) until I've finished the modelling work though. It looks fine at a distance, but there is still a long way to go. I haven't even started extruding the plating on the bottom yet. (I have modelled and mapped it though.) Also I'd like to replace the texture I'm using for the all the wiring and engine junk on the sides with modelled parts eventually.

Finished the top half of the outriggers and the front of the 'nose' of the ship. I'll try to detail the entire top of the ship first, then adding details to the bottom. Once I finish that I'll go back and replace the textured-on engine parts.

That's a great ship! I really like it except for the center extended part for the reason that it's bluntness contradicts the curved design aesthetic you've established for the concept. It doesn't really have any place in a design like that. Just my two cents though. love the colors!

The ebon hawk was actually designed by the game designers to be simmilar to the Millenium falcon. Link (http://www.starwars.com/databank/starship/ebonhawk/index.html)
