Some hull panel tests (hard to see it in the references, so it's certainly way off) and a glimpse into the docking bay...

18th Jul 2006, 23:44
Thanks. :)
Time to bump this. A low rez test of the administrative level. It's not accurate at all (meaning that most of the towers look similar to those on the original, but as a whole it's completely different), but there's nothing I could do about it. Still needs some more antennas and of course more details. Rounded edges, pipes, nurnies, windows, stuff like that.
Think I'm going to redo that part once those Star Trek HD DVDs come out, or once the miracle happens and I meet the guy who knows the guy who is the nephew of the guy who took plenty of high quality photographs of the model when it was featured in an exhibition or so. ;)

This is so cool... I keep looking forward to updates! One note on the interior, though... all the refs I've seen show the botanical area to be RIDICULOUSLY massive... I mean the thing is taller than a mess of ships stacked upon one another, and just wastes way too much space... you may want to make yours more realistically small... maybe two or three deck's worth.

Since it's the 1701-A shown in the image, I assume this is NOT the version of the dock that can accommodate a Galaxy-Class?
Well, it could accommodate several Galaxy class ships, it's just that the original doors are not wide enough. That size issue is the result of a messed up VFX shot, so I just ignore that.
Andrew Probert made a concept sketch with the Enterprise docking at an exterior docking arm, which is what I'm planning to add.

LOL, small? It's like 5 kilometers tall.
only 5km? i would guess closer to 50.
this is from TNG episode 11001001. the Ent-D is nearly 2/3 of a kilometer long.
http://i823.photobucket.com/albums/zz153/AnyStarModeler/PDVD_001.jpg
however, whatever the size is, it looks incredible!!!
TNG messed with the scale by comping over the 1701 with a ship twice the size, so the star trek 3 version is supposed to be like half the size of that one
but either way the model looks fine
somacruz145
29th Dec 2009, 19:19
I have no idea what size it is exactly but I know that the size of its awesomeness is way bigger than 5 kilometers :D The latest render is worthy of getting a calendar print or something.

Hello:
Oh my god, I am speechless (good thing to have a keyboard :D ). The station looks amazing. And I agree with Somacruz145, this looks like it could go in a calendar.... and as wallpapers soon too.
Keep it up with the amazing job!:thumb:.
P.S.: The manual of the game Star Trek: Bridge Commander says it is almost 7 km in height. It may help, but if you got the proportions correctly, then you may figure out the size of your station as I am sure you may compare with ships of known sizes (like the Galaxy Class), then you can come up with a more accurate specs!
Mr. Wilde
29th Dec 2009, 20:44

Well maybe this will put things into perspective. ;) These are older test renders I did, but the sizes haven't changed. As you can see, my version is the movie version, so the Galaxy class will never fit through those doors.

30th Dec 2009, 15:31
If you had time you could always try seeing what it looks like if one of the main doors is replaced with one large enough for the Galaxy class to fit through. By the looks of things it wouldn't need to be too much taller, just a lot wider.
Truth be told, SF could have easily expanded the doors over time so the starbases would include larger ships like the Galaxy class.
Other than that, the mesh, textures and lighting look great.
Nicely done.
BolianAdmiral
30th Dec 2009, 23:58
Yeah... in all practicality, all SF would have to do, is evac the hull sections directly around the doors, demolish/replace those, and install a larger set of space doors... there'd be no reason to build a whole new base just to make it larger.
Adalla
29th Jan 2010, 02:16
Absolutely phenomenal. The Star Trek starbase you are modeling was (besides the Enterprise and Excelsior) my favorite model of the whole show.
Really amazing work.
If you had time you could always try seeing what it looks like if one of the main doors is replaced with one large enough for the Galaxy class to fit through. By the looks of things it wouldn't need to be too much taller, just a lot wider.
Don't want to be a star trek geek but there are starbases that do fit a galaxy class in. Starbase 74 is the same as spacedock except is almost three times the size. It's seen in the episode '11001001' as well as several other TNG episodes.
Now back to the model, excellent work as always Wilde!
Starscream
29th Jan 2010, 13:40
Except that IIRC, 74 was simply a re-use of existing footage - with no attempt at altering the detail in anyway as to indicate the starbase was a larger variant.
From where I'm standing, it makes more sense to have refitted the spacedoors, than design an entirely new, bigger starbase that looks. Exactly. The Same. As the old one but bigger...
Not really, you can refit the space doors but then the doors would take up to much space to retract and the space inside would still be the same. There would be no room for several galaxy glass ships to be docked along with the other class ships. Starbase 74 is 2.3x larger than spacedock and I know people don't like the "scaled up design" idea much, but it can in fact work quite well so long as you stick to direct multiples. The decks themselves would only be made taller by 1 meter or so so there would not really be that much change in window size and the like. Remember almost 80 years has past and if you look at the Enterprise D to the original the interiors have become a lot more spacious in width and in height during that time. You can apply this same train of thought to the starbase 74.
TNG did the same with the Klingon Bird of Prey there is a small version (crew of 12) and a large version (crew of 300+), both exactly the same design though nothing to tell the audience of the change.
Besides its a tv show and if they can cut cost anywhere then they will. Doesn't really matter either way, Mr. Wilde has said which one he is doing and he knows how he's doing it.
Freak
29th Jan 2010, 15:04
This is one very cool Station. does it really matter if it TMP era or TNG, they both look the same, only Difference is the size. which is not really noticable unless you have a TMP Connie coming out of a TNG era station.
Amazing... I'm liking this...

Technically, since the post before it was on the 29th of January, and he posted on the 26th of February, it wasn't really a necro post by definition. Although probably not in the best of taste. ;)
I guess I need to apologize then because when I posted a reply to this thread, it was on the second page. I didn't even realize the previous post date. I was just replying to the look of the model.. Sorry to Necro... will pay a little more attention next time.
Still awesome spacedock though.
