View Full Version : 3D The Hyperion, a Stargate Ship

This is a ship I have been working on for a couple of days now and have reached a point where I am happy with the overall design. I figured I would combine the Prometheus and Daedalus into a ship that I want to designate as a ship for the Pegasus Galaxy. It will have some railguns and a few other "secrets" as I continue to update. I am mostly posting this to get some crit on my modelling skills.

I know about the crappy panels on the sides of the nose but by the time I realized that they looked that bad I had advanced too far. Sorry.

Also, am I doing the engine glow correctly because I have never been able to get a proper engine glow.

One thing -- I like the Daedalus / Prommie combo here. It's nice to see these two ships come together.

Another -- this ship seems much more compact than most other stargate ships. Roughly the size of an Al'Kesh. Yes, No?

Finally -- The name, oh lord, you took my ship's name! No, no, no. :D :D :D :D :D :D Just kidding, though. I love the name Hyperion.

Look forward to seeing more.

Cheers,
Nick

Wow sorry dude, I called myself checking to see if anyone used it already. Don't mind if I use it do you or would you rather me rename it? It is a more compact ship yes. It's size is somewhere in between the two other class ships. It is for use on missions in Atlantis so it doesn't have to be too elaborate.

Oh, no offense on the name, man -- I was just kidding around. As I said, I love the name, and with the Greek naming schemes the Tau'ri use to name their ships, Hyperion fits in very well. Thanks for the background info, BTW. Keep it up!

Cheers,
Nick

neat little compact design! my only complaint is the engines, they look terrible.

sorry if that last bit was too harsh.

Not a bad idea creating a ship for the Pegasus-galaxy. Has to be a very tough vessel if you intend to send it against the wraith.

Keep up, i will watch your progress.

Thanks guys, I promise to fix the engines but it will probably be in a later update. I am focusing on the command tower and I have screwed it up so I am spending my time trying to fix it. Here is a quick update showing the damage.5782
I am trying to make it look good I promise.

great work! i really like your ship, but i have a question, which is the role of you ship?

thorthefifth
12th Jun 2006, 02:38
Thanks Guys, its a carrier along the lines of the Daedalus or Prometheus. It is to be used as a transport and attack vessel created specifically for Atlantean missions. And I am adding strong trinium enhanced armor to the outer hull for the attacks by the wraith:) Here is a tiny update.5803

the paneling is a bit boring, being all squares, and much too thick, i think

thorthefifth
12th Jun 2006, 02:54
Yeah well I am a boring kinda guy, about the thickness, remember it has to be strong enough to take the brunt of a full force wraith attack. We all know shields are never enough.

I think the engine effect needs a smaller more intense glow just inside the engine. then a ring made up of seperated segments that have full white self illumination, that wud look more like the tauri engines from the show

13th Jun 2006, 00:34
lookin gd!!! to me it says "catch me if you can" to which the wriath trys, and falls into a big trap lol. what sort of size is it compared to that of the prometheus?

Cool I like the design is exelent like the concept , a scene in space will allow to better represent your model !

thorthefifth
14th Jun 2006, 04:48
Well here ya go Baptiste11, sort of. I have not finished the model and it is not textured but I was happy with the Planet I made so I figured I would just show it off.

sorry for the lack of updates I have been busy. The cylindrical containers on the side of the ship are Hybrid naquadah reactors. HUGE. I will have some updates tomorrow or tuesday. I promise.

Here is a quick question... how does this early version of the engine I want feel to everyone. Please give some crits. It's still early keep in mind.

I've come up with my desired setup after a long time without any updates. Here it is. All that's left now is small detailing in obvious places.

Would it be such a good idea having what I assume are the main power source for the ship in such a vulnerable position?
Just seems to yell 'shoot me' imho.

which do you like better? And should I get rid of the daedalus style canopy? Hermiod, you are good. I have left the engines unprotected thus far to see who would be the first to notice that. You did it good job. That is going to be the next thing on my list. Or does anyone think I should leave it the way it is?

5th Jul 2006, 05:52
Alanch90 thanks, I liked that one better as well.
Baptiste11 thanks be to you as well, you always give me great praise for my renders. I have done some details and want to know how you guys like em. I got rid of that crap on the front and replaced it with some huge cannons(hey I know they don't have those on stargate, but am freakin tired of railguns) I added some hangar doors in the style of garage doors. I added the cover for the engines on back and the naquadah reactors. I added some interesting stuff to the sides of the ship. If you remember it was bare and needed something. Well now there's something. I think that is about it for now. I've still got alot more to do with this one but I really like how it's turning out. Thanks again for the great comments you guys.

5th Jul 2006, 12:23
Very nice work, and the gus are a nice touch. But maybe a tad big?

thorthefifth
6th Jul 2006, 06:36
I agree Grzesiek, the guns were too big. I went back and made em smaller and added the railguns. The railguns are pretty low poly and I know they are not a hundred percent accurate but if you look at some screens they're pretty close. I modelled them after the ones in the Seige part 2. So far I think everyone has noticed I have mostly been working on the top. Where's the bottom? I tell ya I have forgotten about the bottom. That is the final step in this model, so...

Until then here are the pics. Please give some crit.

here ya go, the Hyperion all fleshed out with my crappy texturing skills. I am going to go ahead and say I am done. I have other ideas that I want to start on and wanted to finish this already. I am obviously still open for critisism and would definately like help texturing. The ship is dedicated to Ashley who I have loved since ninth grade and she doesn't even know it.:(

Well those are cooling vents. They are hot enough to glow from cooling the many reactors the ship is fueled by.

Way cool ship!

Would you be interested in a cutaway/MSD for her at all? :)

thorthefifth
20th Jul 2006, 03:03
I would love to do that but I haven't the slightest idea how. Except of course to model a side view, use the silhouette and in photoshop paint in the rooms and corridors. Is that what you mean or are you wanting to borrow my model and do a cutaway?

Grzesiek
20th Jul 2006, 08:30
Progressed quite well. Still textures need some work. And then a vid of it fighting in a huge battle ;)

thorthefifth
20th Jul 2006, 15:50
It would be interesting to see it in battle along side the Destiny don't you think. Really though, I still have work to do on my need ship that is sort of like an aircraft carrier for F302's. I then have to model the hive and some darts. Don't worry though It is on the horizon.

very nice i dont think the hangers suit it but it looks like it could b the next class of ship

6th Apr 2007, 18:00
i dont know it just seems kinda small and flimsy. look at the deadauls and the prometheus and see how it seems to be massive. it has a lot of supports on it. the hangars are held on by a big hunk of ship. i would love to see where u would go with this.

Legolas25

Wouldn't need to borrow it (a sideview is all I need) but yeah, if you wanted at all I could prolly make one up for you. I've done up the Prometheus and Daedalus so far, so it wouldn't be hard to add this one.

Wow, I thought this was a dead topic. I have actually thought about doing an over-haul of the ol' Hyperion. If you are interested Legolas25 I can render some. What views would you need?

Alright, I had to do it. I am going back and completely redoing the Hyperion because I can't find the original files to alter. We'll have to see how this one turns out.

All I'd really need is a good sideview for the cutaway, but more would always help if you have them, just to flesh out the details.

I'll give you some if I can find the original files. They have been lost since I made the jump to Max 9. Here is an update using some textures from Ramiel's Texture pack available in the meshes area.

This is my progress so far on my redesigned and updated Hyperion model with actual textures that aren't total crap. Any opinions? Does anyone think the new version is better than the old. I am just trying to make this version manageable as far as polygons and texturing. Crits anyone?

Looking good so far. Dunno if I like the textures though, but only 'cause there's so far removed from the Daedalus. They're just different, not necesarily bad or anything... prolly look a lot better when you have more of the ship.

thorthefifth
11th Apr 2007, 01:25
Remember that the textures are just placeholders. I will be working on some final textures after I finish the model. I decided to make the ship slightly shorter than its predecessor. But this model is much more complex.

Thanks, I first began modeling the ship with the knowledge that almost no one does smaller ships for Stargate. If you want to read my mock up TV Show style blog for the Hyperion you can check out my myspace at www.myspace.com/thorthefifth (http://www.myspace.com/thorthefifth)
It's something I have been writing for a while. It is split into episodes like the real show.

It looks like a ship orientated more to peacefull exploration than to battle , rather than Prometheus and Daedalus . Simple yet nice .

its nice to someone else that likes Stargate earth style ships i feel that i should point out someone else made a sg ship called the icarus and there where no nice comments to that thread oh well its a shame, but damn this is one nice looking ship keep it
