I was saving this for after I finished my carrier, but having run into RAM problems, I'm having to put her on hold a while longer. So to keep things going, here is an idea I've been kicking around. The premise was simple enough to start, create some guns on whic I could play with materials and textures. That evolved into create a ship whose sole purpose is a weapons platform, a lot of guns and missle launchers, some big engines and a comm array, slap a bridge on it and call it done. She's heavily armoured and even heavierly armed. At current there are 6 long range cannons (possibly increasing to 8 or 10), 20 medium range guns (possibly going to double), 18 flak cannons [each of which is a quad gattling gun] (possibly going to double or triple) and 16 missle launchers (possibly going to double). These numbers cover just the top side of the ship; the bottom will have guns as well which is why some of these numbers are going to increase as such. The large side cutouts will most likely contain flak cannons, but haven't really decided on that yet. The two protrusions up front will be the comm arrays and the engines I haven't snapped a pic of yet, because I'm not sure if I'm going to keep them as they are right now.

Anyway, here she is the USS NAVAJRON. Enjoy - oh - C & C welcomed.

Why thank you, you could say I just blocked it out.:)

It sort of reminds me of an Inca pyramid, with the step-like sides. Cool start, I can't wait to see more. :D

Sorry to hear you're having RAM troubles with the Klingon carrier. You've put so much work into that and it's awesome.

Well, thank you again. As for the Carrier, turns out it's not my RAM that's the problem, it's my harddrive. I have the fastest my system can support, but it's not fast enough to keep up with the demands the file is placing on it, so it will be slow going until I'm done. Wish me luck.

I'm hoping to wrap this one a lot quicker, it's not intended to be highly detailed, but I still have more to add.

Damn, I knew your Klingon ship was a beast, but your HD can't even handle it. I guess it's a superbeast.

Well the way it was explained to me is, Blender is asking for information faster than my HD can cough it up, so it slows Blender down and that's why it's taking five minutes to do something that should have only taken five seconds. I'm in serious doo.

Let me break it down for you, the primary hull or nose section is 35.7 MB, the neck and tail section which includes the shroud is 116 MB and the secondary hull or wing section is 538 MB. I'm not sure where, but somewhere in the last page or so of the carrier thread I posted the face count of just half the wing and it was over the top. If you haven't looked at it lately, check out what's been done since the last time you saw it.

More on the NAVAJRON as I get to it.

And speaking of updates, I plated the tower and added some more windows. I'm considering making some even smaller inclose guns to place around the tower.

I wanted to see what it might look like in orbit, so I did a little playing around and got the second pic. Anyway, enjoy.

A flying inca pyramid with guns all over it? What are you guys smoking :D ?
But seriously, an interesting idea...

If it was up to me, I would take out some of those guns... Just 'cause I come from a real world where ships only have 8-9 guns of a main caliber....

BoogerMc

Take some out? Hell I still have the underside guns to add in. It's a floating gun platform, that's its sole purpose, no fighters, no exploring, none of that stuff, nada, nill, no way Jose and all that. It's a true "... but carry a big stick" kinda thing, you know.

Nice, why dont you go the whole hog though, and give it a stone texture?

Who says spaceships have to be made of metal anyway?

Its your universe, you make the rules.

BoogerMc

Don't know about that for this one, but maybe for my latest project. Yet another project (follow link in my sig) it's supposed to be for a race of crystal creatures so I was thinking some sort of crystal or mineral type texture, but not sure yet.

to BoogerMc: so this is a gun platform? Okay...The thing is that underneath every turret sits a whole lot of different kind of mechanics...You know, cooling, ammo feeding, ammo depots and all that good stuff.
Man, have pity on the crew...they have to eat, sleep, rest....bathrooms too :)
Hallways are also very, very importants:)

BoogerMc
13th Apr 2007, 16:11
What crew, they're slaves, what need of they for food, sleep, etc. Where do you think their waste goes... BWHAHAHAHAHA!

Seriously though, yes I have considered all those things, I'm just going to model them. I'm just having fun and learning to do different things, so why worry about the details? It's never stopped most Sci Fi writers and / or designers yet.

Yeh, true...But some mathie comes along and says that your model is unrealistic. At that point, if you live in certain states, you should take a shotgun and reduce mathie population a little:)

Man, you can come up with the design work. Well done!

I had since given up on Blender because the interface is a real pain in the neck (and my old chair a pain in the back).

BoogerMc

Thank you for the kind words.

I do however have to wonder why so many people have a problem with the "interface" in Blender. It's really not that hard if you read the instructions and familarize yourself with most of the keyboard shortcuts. I've been at this for about five years now and I learn new tricks about once a month. I do have to admit I'm having a few problems with the 2.44 version, some things have been changed that I'm not very happy about, but I will find ways around them. Give it another shot, follow some of the tutorials in the manual or look for the "Blending for the faint hearted" ones around here. They are quite excellent and use many of the short cuts I mentioned. Good Luck.

Talk about reserecting the dead.

I've been gone a while, but haven't forgotten all you guys, just been real busy with real life. Anyway, that said, I had a brain fart the other day and began a revamp of this ship. I have looked at and redesigned every aspect from basic shape to the name itself. I present the newest version the U.E.S. NAVARONE 20704 Hopefully some of my old friends out there are watching and will give me their opinions, but I'll settle for some from new friends as well. Enjoy.

That's pretty decent, I especially the second ship. Good job, :thumb:.

BoogerMc

Actually they are the same ship. The second one is the redesign. Speaking of which, updates are here.

I added the new tower with a communications array and some in close guns around forward section.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e173/BoogerMc/USS%20NAVAJRON/UESNAVARONE4.jpg

Also added some in close guns around the engines to help protect them.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e173/BoogerMc/USS%20NAVAJRON/UESNAVARONE5.jpg

A little side note, as I stated earlier, this was originally started as a test bed for materials and textures; however it has and is still evolving and therefore more background and details will follow in the near future as they become available. A few for right now are as follows: there are ten capitol guns, five topside and five underneath; four forward and one aft per location. There are 32 medium range guns, 32 in close guns (which are quad gattling guns) and 32 missle launcher each with 28 tubes on each side of the forward section. Eight in close guns on each side of the sublight engines (those are the blue glowy ones, the red/orange glowy ones are the faster than light engines) and four inclose guns at the fore and aft sections. I will most likely add a few smaller in close guns around the tower and what is scheduled to become a communications array on the underside of the ship, but that will most likely be it for the guns, maybe.

That said, enjoy.

A few close ups, the control tower and the comm array on the underside. I'm saving the plating process for last. Enjoy.

It's got a lot of coolness to it, BMc - Of course a ship named "Navarone" needs lots of guns, and this baby delivers.

The texturing on the hull is VERY interesting, sort of like there's segmented plating underneath and a topcoat that hides the plating, but has been worn off in spots. It works better from a distance than close up.

I like the spiky series of arrays sticking out the front. Very Nostromo-like, but also very functional. Each piece looks like it does something specific, rather than just something tossed on for added detail. Good work!

Yeah, that's a really cool-looking ship :thumb: Nice details and unique texturing. The model is a bit uneven when it comes to quality in some parts but overall it's very good :D Good job !

BoogerMc
3rd May 2008, 16:52
Not sure what is meant by "uneven" but thanks for the kind word none the less.

CL, that texturing was a fluke, I wanted the panels on everything, but couldn't find a way to make it affect the "rust coat" texture, but I think I figurd it out a while ago while rebuilding the Klingon Carrier. Yes you heard me right, I have been busy rebuilding the old girl once again (if I counted right this would make it Version 5.0, must be an omen since I like 5.0 Mustangs), anyway, should be posting some updates to both ships soon. Stay tuned and you might be pleasantly surprised.
