OK .. some guys see the 2d draws of my propositon of the USS Yorktown (and Legends class) for Star Trek Origins fanfilm. (There is here (http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1561))

Now i put the 3d wip.

I begging modelling the design 1, but i change to the second design (reduced neck section, go to 11 decks approximated).

The ship have a mixture of details from NX, TOS and TMP (Refited Enterprise), like my alternative connie WIP. So looks more primitive compare wich it.

Tasks :

- End the warp nacels
- Do phaser banks
- Do shuttle bay doors and small tweaking of these zone
- Do wings to the warp nacels
- Do grid lines in secundary hull and neck
- Do secundary cargo bays doors in the saucer
- Do Photon torps tubes.
- Do windows
- Do basic texturing (aztec pattern (i dont do it again in mesh!!), warp grid in the nacels, and prepare the materials to add the text layers)

Edit : There a lot of things that changed from the initial post.
. I will changing the attach - post avatar to reflect big changes in what I'm doing now.

The shadows are very harsh so it's hard to make out details in certain perspectives, you might wanna put a weenie bit of fill light in there.

This renders are wich the default lights of 3d MAX. I use it usualy to crete any model, later i will put ligths.

I tweaked a bit the sizes of the bridge, to match to the size of TOS bridge (and turbo lift), and keep a logic size of the Conference room (and a bathroom ... not comment lol)

I advanced in the ship ... i nearly finished the mesh of the warp nacels.... I recycled some of my early works in TOS ships (the intecorlers, the bussard collector animated texture and the warp coils (i redo the mask texture).

I recibe some sugestions of put the warp nacels in a upward position, but in a low angle position. I thnik that is a bad idea, because i need to make too long the wings to place the warp nacels in a logic postion. Do you think ?

I advanced more wich the warp pylons. I merged the mesh wich the secundary hull, make a bit more wide the pylon, and retouch the grid. Now i'm thinking how extend the grid over the secundary hull.

I agree. It's always seemed to me they belonged below the saucer, unless you want to land the thing of course.

I was working wich the grid lines over the secundary hull.. It's nearly finished the secundary hull ... only small details, like pahser banks and windows. Im, thniking of adding some grid lines in the warp enginering room and in the bottom curved cut.

I was a bit stoped this last days becasue i begin to work this Thursday (haha.. i will update my CPU & Mother board wich the drop of CPU prices wich Conroe arrive), and my 3d max 6 was begin to doing a strange bug that is increasing his frecuency. When im working wich the ship (mainly wich the secundary hull or all ship) the 3d max crash... lucky, the files are safe (and i do a lot of backups!), but now i cant doing any thing wichout my 3d max crash (i can open the files, but when i render the all ship or rotate the view... crash). Im trying to discover why do it .... perhaps i will copy the files to my brother computer wich a clean install of 3d max and continue on it....

There are two images.... one is a proto-msd of the ship , wich the decks ... there i see that the primary hull (were are the crew quarters) is too small. so i modificate the suacer shape to add a deck, and mach better the decks height, that we can see the in the second image. I redoing the rectangular section over the saucer and the impulse engine room section.

I do other 2d image of where i will place the windows over the secundary and saucer hulls.... and i put a idea of hull marking ...

These symbol is a mixture of the arrowed star that i see in a lot of non-canon pre-tos ship and the yellow bumeragn over bars of the TOS Constitution.

I was doing today morething ... i was working in the nacels (adding details, paneling and a small changes...) and addign the last grid lines in the secudnary hull and preparing to make the windows in the secundary hull.

Ok... now i think that i finish to modeling the nacel (i redoing the intercoler, and add a small details in the bottom coils. Now the only thing that im reusing of the my early works in TOS ships is theframe were are put the upper coils)... only keeps to finish of apply materials and texturing.... I apply the decal wich the NCC-1201 number of the YorkTown.

I waste a bit of my time tryingto create a TTF wich a very fideligne font of the TOS Hull text, based over a bitmaps thati get some time ago, that are the most fideligne that i see of these font (there free TTF font of TOS hull font, but have big diferences in special wich the numbers)

I advanced much today .... Im prepraing to texturing the ship (i only need to do a smallchanges i nteh secundary hull, and discover why doing soem artifact in the front of the cross section overthe saucer (these longthing over the saucer that youshould rember a bit to Galactica :P )

Now the windows only are a poly of the hull, wich a white 100% iluminated texture that ina future i will extrude to do some depth, and later i will remobe the white polys, to see a more profesional windows wich see of some interiors :devil: , but before we must (the STO team) a very good idea of how are the interiors and were is palce over the ship ( i desing the ship wich a deck template and i cleaver idea of palce some things, like the brdige, the conference room, the Warp reactor enginering and a mess room,andwere will the crew quarters)

I was working a bit wich the textures, and adding a last details over the ship. Nav lights over the secundary hull, a bit grid lines in the bottom, adding complexity over the back of the saucer, and adding the back photon launcher, amen of changi a bit hte phased laser bottom bank of the secundary hull to steal a little bug of the mesh :P

I make a video and upload to youtube, to see the aniamted textures of Bussard collectors and blinking nav lights.

Nice animation, but the compression is a bit to strong imo, you can'T make out any details!

YouTube, recomend to use 320x400 ( around of it) wich MPEG4 compresion ... i resice and recompres my video (was on NTSC resolution wich DV encoded) wich viratualdub, and for a strangue thing, it can't compress over MPEG4 (or divx wich these size) so i compres over Intel Indeo 4.5 and upload in these format.

I compress in Indeo 4.5 .... i will be crazy wich the codecs ... 3d MAX 8 only can save AVIs in No-compres or DV codec (but 3d max 6 that are in my pc,can do in more codecs....). My Preimere Pro, not can use all codecs that i have in my pc (like two loss-less codcs that i download, but VirtualDub, can ... ¬¬) and Cool Editr Pro,cant open Quicktime videos to mixthe audio wich the video..... This next week, i will reainstall windows (hehehe... i will jump to AMD 64 Dual cores ....), and i will try to reisntall all and avoid this problems wich the codecs...

Well well ... a long time without updates....
I'm making progress which texturing he ship, and i do a minor change in planetary sensor dome, his base, and the light sources of the bottom side of the saucer.

Plus, I'm testing if a new design of the photonic torpedo tubes can look much better, that the simple holes "a la NX"

I'm begin to model from scratch a drydock for our use. It's a mix of Warp Five complex and TMP drydock (which adequate size for the Yorktown). I manage to recycle a pieces from my wip of TMP drydock.

It's more a sketch for the moment. For example, I'm thinking that the fingers can be more solid, instead of make it which tubes. :idea:


Plus i was working more in the shuttle. I give a bit more rounded shape and put a detail in the top similar to a detail or thing that have the "executive shuttle" of ST VI. Also, i put the Phased Laser emitter, but it don't end to like me, so i will erase it and remake new. :runs:

I make the "fingers" more solid, and improve details in the unions between finger segments. Also, i get more detail in the office complex attached. If any see it, i get the antenna style of Warp Five Complex, but i put over the offices, and i make 3 modules in the bottom in similar fashion of the modules of TMP Orbital Offices Complex.

I'm improved it more. I think that now the main job, is giving some greeble to the upper side, and get a more complex shape to long cylinders in the sides and put windows in the office complex. After it, i will begin to search a better color/shading and begin to put the textures (in this case, are very simple, mainly, put a text in a side which "Drydock ??????" a bit marks of Starfleet, the light panels, and texture a bit the office complex.

Harrisw, you not are the first guy that say anything about a WC for bridge crew. In first draws that i made, i put a wc next to the bridge, but later i removed. But there empty space (usable for this) to put a wc if STO crew think that it's a good idea.

I get stooped the last week, because i get sick :shiner: . I retake, and finished of putting the windows in the office complex, and a observatory/ waiting room big windows near the docking bridge. Plus, i make some modifications in the docking hatches to integrate in the structure.

I'm working over the base, that the Legend class, are one of the last ships of a style of look&feel that come from 2190s. Design later of the Legend class, will get a more TOS style, which more soft edges and more rounded shapes.

Really like yoru work here. I think your stuff captures the original series very well and also sort of the old Star fleet battles wher ethere is mro ethan just the constitution class. Lovely stuff.:thumb:

Any more progress on the lovely Yorktown itself? I've always thought it a very "believable" ancestor of the Constitution - looks rough enough to cope with anything!

Ummm... the lkast thing that i did on the YT was texturing the warp pylons and addign the spikes in the bussard collectors. I forgot to put a image there when i did a bit weeks ago.

Today im more busy in try to catch a bit ship models for our show.. Mainly I'm searching for a ENT Klingon BoP and the D5 of ENT. I get a low-poly Raptor from a mod of BC, that could work, but not looks very good. From the same source i get a very good Tholian ship (from ENT). In our forums the Tholian ship was recibed good.... we like to show Tholians in a bit chapters

The mesh have for the moment : 11015 vertices and 9182 faces

Things to do :
-Add more details to the impulse engines.
-Create the doors for the shuttle bay
-Add the small spheric "shell" that have the K'Tinga, but in other place (looks like the emergency warp core expulsion doors)
-Put the Klingon "ramscoop" of the wings
-Put these "red bars" from the D5, Raptor, and 22 century BoP, in similar place
-Add Disrupters (i think, two or three in the head, two in the "elbows", and one over the shuttle bay or the impulse core / main engineering
-Try to improve a bit the "elbow" of the wings
-Add a bit of grebble in some strategic points
-Put the back torpedo launcher, and add a bit detail to the torpedo launcher
-Paneling the ship in similar way to the K'Tinga
-Adding the Klingon marks (texturing phase) plus the name of the ship in Klingon font (i thought call it the "quylIS ghop" or Hand of Kahless :flippy: ). Before of this, will be usable for a scene for our first vignette and first tittles (and yeah ... it will be show FIGHTING.
-Finally .. texturing it.

A quick update. I worked on adding more details in the main engineering ,add the shuttle bay, add the shell, add the ramscoop and i add some grebble and details to the frontal side of the body.

Also, i was thinking were place the disrupters. I was watching careful the K'Tinga (have 8 disrupters or more), and i think that 7 disrupters should work. Two will be on he head, like the K'Tinga, other two in the "elbows" of the wings, other last two in the back of the wings, in the bottom side (back firing arcs) and one last disrupter, in the bottom side of the main body.

The only other original design that was also chopped (that I remember now)was the John Eaves Klingon D-6 or D-5 that I included it in my calendar image for 2006. It was originally done FOR FREE for ST:Enterprise by Koji [Kuramura], who stayed up 36 hours to do it for the show. It looked great, but then the "producer(s)" said, "put more windows on it". We said no (You have to understand that we did so much extra, that at that point it was the straw that broke the camels back when they were being mindlessely trivial and unappreciative). So, in there infinite wisdom, they choose to use a lo-rez K'Tinga model (from a timeline over 100 years later) we had lying around. Because that was much more logical than a ship that needed 10 more windows that no one would EVER notice!!!! E boy...

I begin to add panels to the wings. I make the splines and begin to merge ... but i'm getting overload which the job of cleaning the bad vertexs that Shapemerge create. :S If there any automatic or more easy procedure to eliminate these pesky bad vertexs....

Pretty much. The VFX crew was overworked with all the effects needed for the first season to that point, and it's a miracle that Koji actually made and textured the model for no charge at all, ready to render and animate.

I'm sorry that I sounded snippy in my last post, but I just wanted to shed some light here.

You're making an excellent variant of the D4. I can't wait to see the texturing, based on the stuff you've done with the Yorktown. :thumb:

Those are the best mid-ENT -TOS ships I've seen. I especially like the engines of the D7 style ship and I like even more that you put little turrets on it, the same way the original D7 model has little turrets all over it.

Hm, I would change the glow of the engines to a red or a green... If I remember correctly in ENT the glows where green, in TNG they were red...but I can't remember them in yellow...

Are you secure ?? I was rewatching a bit images of ENT, and the warp nacels have a orange thing glowing (not yellow, like i remember. I will fix it)

In TNG, the Klingon ships which red glow are the Vorcha (And i always thought that these red glows are the equivalent Klingon of Bussard Collectors) ! Not the K'Tinga , so not are a valid to compare ...

And in DS9 , early the K'Tingas have a green glow but change to cyan.

I did cyan glow in the warp coils, because the most near to the D6, the D7 K'Tinga looks to have Cyan glow here, and I keep the orange thing of the D5 because is old. Think in a mix of tech, or evolution of the Klingon warp coils/nacels tech.

We was talking in STO forums, and we decide to redo the YT..

Why ?
For one side, there some people that think that looks too modern (this depend of the Point of View, for me, are ok for his period of time)
For other side, there a bit details that not ended to like me (in special the thusters), or i see that in Enterprise, TOs and TMP never was like i do (the saucer border)
And finally trying to optimize the mesh, using less polys (from when i made it to today, i learn much, and now i think that i can do best), using less polys and quickly can be smoothed for near images using NURMs subdivision of 3d Max

I love the rear cap on that nacelle, it's reminiscent of the Enterprise as it appeared in The Cage.

A small update. I was doing small thing wich a notebook. I apreciated that i make more optimized this model when i was working wich the notebook (80K triangles for the moment)

New Updates .. I add a bit more details to the nacel, and i worked in Bussard FX. I get a bit of "Koerner" style here. I played wich KY Blur Surface plugin to try to archive the desire effect. I mainly im trying to avoid the "light bulbs" of TOS and trying to do something more interesting and technological.

The pylons need thicker. They look like they could snap off when it jumps to warp. Other than that a nice ship.

Umm... the pylons are moew wider and thicker that TOS pylons (Why, the TOS pylons look like they could break when it jumps to warp :P ). I think that have the adequate proportion of wider/thicker/long, but i will think about you say.

That's the price of free hosting. They have to make money to pay the bills somehow. If you don't have one or both of them, I'd recommend either getting the Firefox 2 or Netscape Navigator 9 web browsers. They're built on the same technology, so the pop-up blockers on both are excellent and block all of those annoying ImageShack pop-ups.

The only thing I don't like about this is that round area on top of the hull just behind the connecting dorsal (neck.) What is that for? It seems to serve no purpose.

Umm.... This ship was inspired over the Asia class of Masao's Stafleet Museum (if you see, there a lot of things of these design here, including the round area that you said).

These thing, in the begin i thought that were is the enginering room wich a horizontal warp core like Enterprise Refit Eng. Room, but now are the main deuterium tanks of the ship.

Think that is more smaller that the Enterprise NCC-1701 but is a exploration ship and need to carry a lot of fuel to doing long deep space missions of exploration of five years which long times in unexplored space.

Wops! I simply do a docking hatch for the standard dock ring using in all starfleet ships and the inspection pod ( in these iamge can be appreciated, but even i did the interior clamps were the shuttle doors slide)

I will think how i can make it extendable.....


Edit : Finally i don't will do it. Why ??? Well, they have teletransporters and shuttles ... why hells need to doing a extendable docking bay in the ships. In the starbases and drydocks is necessary but in starships, not.

But i change it. I extrude a bit outside (plus, i change the saucer border angle to 60º, like TOS saucer), to make more easy to dock which inspection pods, shuttles and starbases/drydocks

am I the only one that notices that this ship is a time bomb? Look, at the schematics again. Notice the poor placement of reactive materials. Armory on bottom of saucer. One hit, goodbye saucer. Deuterium on TOP of Secondary hull; one hit, goodbye ship, which'll also set off a very pretty supernova type event from the antimatter. One well placed hit ANYWHERE on the forward secondary hull and can you say "matter to energy"?

Looks like a cool ship, but the placement of critical systems needs alot of work.

Well. Point one . NX have the armory in the same place ! (photonic torpedo launchers !) And i not see it making BOOM when the Xindy heavy damage it. The TOS Enterprise, looks to have the main weapons in the same place. Plus the Torpedo launchers of Ent-A are in the neck (hit it and blow all neck, separating the saucer from the sec. hull), but hells ... The Reliant hit in these place, and we not see the Enterprise making BOOM, etc.... If you watch .. every ship of Star Trek have his weapons which his ammo in a easy site to shot ! And some times was hit, and nothing happened. I think that the stored torpedos can't detonate by a explosion like today torpedoes or missiles. Plus, i never see a Phaser exploding if not was set to overload.... So this point not is a problem... Not will make to explode the saucer.

Second point : The Deuterium can't explode ... to explode need a reactive matter (for example oxygen) and in big quantity! Plus you can see that in Star Trek universe, the deuterium tanks always are near the hull surface ... even in place that we see getting damage (Ent-D get a Borg cutting beam in a place very near to his deuterium tanks) and not make Ka-Boom. So .. again ... not are bad placed.

Third point :I see that i put a too big anti-matter tanks .. Now i see that are used smaller tanks and are a bit more inside of the ships. In this point i need to say that I agree which you.

II need to say that if the critical elements in Star Trek universe, was well placed, in first, the bridge not will be in the upper side of the hull, well visible and unprotected of fire. Will be inside of the ship.... But this is Star Trek.

But fell free to doing more feedback, I'm grateful for constructive critic.

Trek doesnt place things very well :p Deuterium actually in theory isnt combustible come to think of it... The weapons areas are usually a little further under the hull; take the A for instance, it had walking areas, working areas, all that around the launching area. So it had a bit of a void for the weapons to hit.

The weapons under the saucer, and armory... well that's just bad engineering :p

Antimatter of course is usually stored in much smaller tanks as you've already noted.

Of course Trek designers don't place things well. One lucky shot to the Enterprise-D's torpedo launcher and the torpedo magazines would explode and the saucer would be permanently separated. :devil:

Looks good, Zarodz. And the only argument for making an extendable docking port is that it's fun to do. But, if you don't want to, it's obviously your call. ;)

Finally i do a more simplistic thing. I simply put a sliding "door" in the same fashion of the Enterprise refit Docking Hatches. Inside are the docking "hole". I thinking about putting one visible docking bay in the back of the saucer. But I'm not sure about it. I will see it and play which it. Plus, I'm preparing to create the windows.

Edit : And other example of "bad things" in trekverse is the "Antiprotons" on Deflector dish. Picard say that they can't shot to the Borg, because a bad shot hitting the saucer, can blow up half ship !!!! Wow, and if a enemy ship fire in it ???

Note : I forgot yet put the 3 circle frontal windows in the saucer border and other 4 circle windows in the back of the bottom of the bridge that are for the Offircers lounge.

Edit : I begin to shape merging the windows splines and giving bump to it.

Tip : How bevel the windows in six steps :
When you shape merged the windows spline and cleaned of bad vertex. You should try this, works fine and which only adding a bit strategical edges you can apply sud div without problems.
1º Insert 0,01m
2º Bevel which Height = -0,005m and Outilnes = -0,01m
3º Bevel which Height = -0,01m and Outilnes = -0,005m
4º Extrude which Height = -0,01m
5º Apply the same smoth group to this rim that have the "wall surface". The interior must have other smoth group (if you not delete it...)
6º Fix bad smothing tweakling wich the trangulation of "wall surface"
Optional step : If you have in mind using Sub-Div or turbosmoth, you should put some strategic edges in the "wall surface" to guide the sub-div algorithms and get correct surfaces.

So proportionally, is this ship smaller than a Connie? It's just that my USS Pendle Witch is connie-based and looks very much like yours (I didn't know about it before I did the PW and it's odd shape!!! :D ), it's very good though, another nice bridge between the ENT era and the TOS era... :)

Well... the model it's finished ... i only need to put a thing that i forgot .. the shuttlebay lights. Now only is texturing work, putting the light textures and perhaps finally, puttign a very soft aztec pattern.

USS Yorktown, class Yorktown

Cruiser, Launched in 2230 - Initial main role : Deep Space Exploration and defensive cruiser. Later roles : Companion of Constelation heavy cruisers and frontier patrols.

First Warp 8 capable ship of the Federation. Initially failed to break the Time barrier (warp 7.3) because his warp core not was capable of make enough power to do it. Even which this flaw, this new cruiser was produced in some quantity because was the only ship in star fleet that can match the Klingon D-6 battlecruiser (which a bit changes in the basic design of the ship to carry experimental weapons and better shielding), and build quickly. When the Constitution class begin to be produced, this class was displaced by the Conie in deep space exploration missions. But after it, this class, and in special, the USS Yorktown make history when finally in 223X [6, 7] before a refit in the warp core (Eight series Mk Ia warp core), can break for first time the Time barrier and reach Warp 8.

This ships hold Klingons forces initiate a war before of 2243, plus was the main ships of Starfleet in the second conflict which the H’gerians. Later,They had a great performance in Hapspear war of 2243, were working in battle fleets which Saladin class destroyers and Tiberius class Frigates or in groups of tree ships, two Yorktowns and one light cruiser, manage to keep the front lines static and withdraw Klingon strike fleets. After of the war, wich more Constitutions in the fleet and which the mighty D-7 K'Tinga battlecruiser in play, this class was relegate to work initially like Companion of the Conies, plus doing patrol duties and finally was begin to be retired in 2270's to be replaced by the new Miranda class.

But i think that in some moment, I will must convert to a poly mesh... I will need to find a good 3d Max Nurbs tuto .. in especial .. How make "Bevels" wich Nurbs...

Not looks that i did much, but in the true, I redo it like 3 o 4 times. Why ? Well.. In first, I'm self-learning Rhino at same time that i make the ship, and some times, I found thing that not end to look well, and I redo better. But the quality of the model is much better that before... I getting really soft surfaces...

I invert the pylons, if you compare which my draws, and I add a similar Intrepid trim/border that works like shuttle bay floor and his extensions is were the pylons are attached (like the Intrepid class) I think that this give a more balanced view of the pylons- shuttlebay-nacels and help to kill the "little sovereign" effect that I like to avoid.

I can't reveal anything of the plot around of this ship, because this is a small "job" for a fan-made stories, that ask me for a design of the Voyager A... But it will be launched before of these date ... and not will be a Naomi Wildman in this ship :flippy:

I get more detail in the nacel, and I make the depression on the saucer section. Plus, I changed a bit the shutlebay section ... I test how can look a shutlebay door which a shape bit similar to USS Titan of stourangeau (a parabolic shape of the door in Top view)

I'd add a third nacelle to this one, or scrap the current nacelles & ask the owner of the Interceptor-Class if they'd mind you using theirs'. Use Sovereign-Class style hull plating. Make her look just the tiniest bit intimidating. One, (NOT two,) Ronin/Borodin-Class phaser canons under the saucer section a-la Dak Phoenix's Phalanx-Class. Put in one or two torpedo launcher ports on the very very forward tip of the saucer section (just above or just below the airlock.)

Brrr..... I need to redo the bridge, because the file was get damaged !! :(

Well. Before a day of work over it, i redo the bridge from scratch, and finally, I redo the "spinal column" and the deck over the saucer, making a bit more softer and uniform. Plus I make more longer the spinal column to give a point of "axis" where the shutlebay doors turns

I only need to put the deflector hole, and the base design will be finished... It's obvious that I make some changes on the design at same time that I was making it in 3d. The most obvious is the warp nacel, the bridge and the shutlebay.

Well. Finally I make the deflector hole, I try three times before I find the correct way of doing it which the aspect that I like.

I did a first approach to the deflector .... I not like how looks ... too big. I'm searching the way of doing it look more similar to the deflector of the Akira, Prometheus or USS Titan.

I will try two things ... A deflector, which the same shape but identical to Akira or Prometheus (keeping the hole). And i will try how looks a circle shape deflector changing again the hole.

I think that I will retouch this version of the deflector hole a bit, and will be ok. It's more similar to the deflector that have the Luna class (USS Titan) and the Sovereing.
