LOS ANGELES
NOVEMBER, 2019
:D
Recently I read that Ridley Scott is working on a new cut of his si-fi masterpiece Blade Runner, which is going to premiere next year. This 'Final Cut' is suposed to be the movie as Ridley wanted it to be back in 1982. It's going to be very hard to wait until 2007 to watch this amazing movie on the big screen for the first time -I was born two years after the premiere of the original cut- so I've decided to model a Spinner, the futuristic flying car designed by Syd Mead, which is also one of the most recogniceable elements of the film.
This is what I've done so far. Still a lot of work to do.

sweet! love it.

see i'm not the only one to make a SP avitar
The DVD blurb for this says
This is Blade Runner: The Final Cut, Ridley Scott's definitive new version of his science-fiction masterpiece. This multi-disc Special Edition release will also contain three alternate versions of Blade Runner: the Original U.S. Theatrical Cut (never before available in the UK); the Expanded International Theatrical Cut; and the 1992 Director's Cut.
So there'll be 4 different versions on the DVD,I really hope that he puts the whole sequence with Zhora getting killed and Deckard fighting Leon all back in the correct order.
Nice Mesh so far too !!!!!

Fun Trivia Fact: The movie Soldier (w/Kurt Russell) is set in the same universe as Blade Runner.
Fun Trivia Fact: The movie Soldier (w/Kurt Russell) is set in the same universe as Blade Runner.
That story is a load of nonsense in many ways from writer David Peoples. Just because there's a Spinner on the planet amongst the junk, there's also part of the Lewis & Clark from Event Horizon there but it doesn't mean it's set in that Universe.
I know they mention the battles of Tannhauser Gate and Shoulder of Orion from Blade Runner, but there are also references to Star Trek 2,Escape from New York and Aliens in Todd's war record
Now I know David Peoples has refered to Soldier as a "side-quel" because it's meant to be set in the Blade Runner universe but that's more of an after thought I'm sure, the soldiers are obviously not meant to be Replican't like Roy Batty as they certainly have more than a 4 year lifespan.I read an interview with him years ago when he more joked at this story because of the Spinner being there on the planet, now everybody thinks it's true.
Had it felt more like the Blade Runner universe or had Replicant's then it might have been true.
As another note Todd is equiped to use the Illudium PU36 Explosive Space Modulator from the Marvin the Martian cartoon's,does this make Soldier also set in the Bug's Bunny universe ? :)

I haven't progressed too much lately because I'm still trying to fix the mesh-error in the 'wing' :shiner:
I have also some segmentation in the back side.

Basajaun
17th Jul 2006, 16:07
Update:
After being tweaking the mesh for several days, finally the mesh error has gone!!! :D
You won't notice a lot of changes since the last few updates because for the most part I've been rounding edges (chamfer/bevel), cleaning the mesh to fix small errors and so on, plus I'm probably one of the slowest 3D modelers around here :p
The good news is that I think I'm done with the hardest part of modeling the Spinner which was defining the basic shape, and what's left is just adding detail here and there. The problem is that my reference pics are of very low quality and they don't show very well all this detail so I guess I'll have to figure it.
BTW, something that may interest to all BR fans: in October there's going to be a re-release of the Director's Cut (http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/blade-runner-directors-cut.html) on DVD for a limited period and then, as I said earlier, in 2007 there's going to be a theatrical realease of a new cut by Ridley Scott wich is going to be part of a new 3-disc set which is going to include all the 4 cuts of BR (Original US Theatrical Cut, International Cut, Director's Cut and Final Cut) along with plenty of bonus features :)

I got my references together for you this weekend. I just need to figure out how to get over 600MB of info to you. If you have broadband I can use the "you send it" service. But if I can figure out how to make a torrent and get it on a server then a lot of people could get it as well.

Update: the bottom part is almost finished, there are just a few things missing. It's not very accurate but I have not a lot of reference pictures of it.
That is AWESOME. What a great model.
Of course, is anyone now thinking that that Tumbler in Batman Begins is not as original a design as they all like to go on about it being? I'd go as far as to call it a total ripoff.

Basajaun: the model looks great! sweet job man!
I always thought that the directors cut was Ridley's vision of the movie... no narration, unicorn scene added back in, no 'happy ending'... but I'd be curious to see what this newer version has - and maybe they'll release it in Blue Ray or HDDVD!
If you are really interested in the movie, I'd recommend reading: Future Noir - The making of Blade Runner (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0061053147/sr=8-1/qid=1153453599/ref=pd_bbs_1/102-6516907-7478530?ie=UTF8) by Paul M. Sammon. It's a very thorough and very readable making of book. They even have a nice decription of all the different version that are out or were out.
Anyway... I always wanted to see someone model some of the designs from BR and you're doing a great job!
cheers!

Basajaun: the model looks great! sweet job man!
Thank you :)
I always thought that the directors cut was Ridley's vision of the movie... no narration, unicorn scene added back in, no 'happy ending'...
Ridley Scott was under a lot of pressure when he made the Director's Cut and they didn't gave him enough time to do it properly. His idea was to take the workprint and use it as the basis for the new cut and restore it including never before seen footage (the unicorn, the violence scenes from the International Cut, Holden in the hospital...) plus some important changes (no narration, no 'happy ending'...). In the end, he was only able to do the changes you mentioned over the original 1982 cut (not over the restored workprint as he wanted). In Scott's words "the DC is almost the movie he wanted to do back in 1982".
I've read somewhere that he has been working for quite a long time in this new Final Cut, so I guess this time he has done it in his own way without any interference from Warner Bros.

Now I'm really curious if he'll do any special effects fixes or changes? matte fixes, etc, or anything stupid like lucas did?? hopefull not... and if there is anything hopefully it will just be cosmetic!

I imagine the only thing he would change is some wire removal. The FX ar perfect as they are. BR is still a movie to be surpassed in the VFX department.

Those are in the archive file I posted. So many people took photos of it while it was still there. It's gone now. My understanding is that it was chopped up and sent to a landfill.
On a realated note, the Sci-fi museaum here in Seattle has a refurbished Spinner in one of the conference rooms.

only watched this film the other night for the first time. seriously cool movie, I seen a part of the first cut when I was in new york afew weeks back the one wth the narration by harrison ford and was getting really into it when i had to go for dinner in planet hollywood lol.
Was a surprise to see Edward James Olmos in it as hes in the new Galactica series and hes just really cool in the film even as a supporting role. was expecting him to either whip out a cheesy looking blazer from miami vice or tell someone to frak off or atleast say launch vipers lol. Seriously cool actor though.
On the model, well all I can say is it looks like a really cool effort can see a mile away its been a love hate relationship in some areas such as that wing mesh error and what not but overall its come together perfectly :)

Hi!
Another update.
The interior is being, by far, the most difficult part to model mainly due to the lack of good reference material. I'm trying to make it as accurate as possible and as a result I find myself undoing previously modeled parts and remodeling them again all the time.
The extirior isn't totally finished but what's left are just some minor details and a few mesh errors and segmentation that I'll handle later.

Hello everyone, I'm back :)
It's been more than two years since the last update. I think it's about time to make some progress on this model. After I carefully checked the reference material that cobywan gave me, I realised that the bottom part of the Spinner needed some remodeling, so that's where I've started. I have also made some minor modifications to the interiror and I hope to finish detailing it in a couple of weeks. The remaining stuff -wheels, door-opnening mechanism...- will need some more time.

I'd like to be able to animate the doors and the front wheels -coming in and out of the 'pods'-, does anyone know any good tutorials about rigging machines/mechanical objects?
Concerning the modeling stage, which I hope won't last too long, I'd say the interior is pretty much finished. The available reference doesn't reveal too much detail so I'm improvising and adding stuff randomly.

For "improvising and adding stuff randomly", that's all very plausible details. You could easily have gotten away with saying you were doing it all to exact blueprints :D

Hi!
I've completed the rigging for the forward wheels and the "pod-caps". It's not exactly what I was looking for -expressions and such is just too advanced stuff for me- but it works so I think it's ok. Here's an animation I've done to test it and a couple more images. Modeling of those parts is not yet finished, but almost.
nice very nice.

Hi!
Sorry for the delay but there's been some major remodeling going on in the past few weeks. You probably won't notice most of it, but believe me, there've been a lot of subtle changes. In the other hand, I was finally able to properly rig the landing gear and now it's working the way it should so, overall, I'm quite happy with the way this project is progressing so far.
Here are some images, I hope you like them:

Looks very good except for one glaring error . In the second picture from the top, the front wheels are turned. The housing is cutting in to the right front wheel almost to the middle of the tire. Your going to have to figure out how to turn the wheels without that interference.
Basajaun
24th Jul 2009, 17:51
I just turned them to make the renders more interesting, but obviously the design only allows the direction of the wheels to be turned a few degrees. As you pointed out earlier, the Spinner offers poor visibility and the front wheels don't allow proper maneuvering of the vehicle. I believe the only purpose of the landing-gear is to land the car and some very basic driving capabilities on the ground, but that's all.
cobywan
24th Jul 2009, 18:27
On the full sized car they cut out the fairing on the bottoms to allow the wheels to turn.
http://www.c-we.com/piranha/spinner3.jpg
I think this implies that they cut it in the upper left section view;

I checked the screencaps you provided me a couple of years ago and the film itself shows clearly the Spinner with the hemispherical housing of the wheels intact -no cuts- so I asume that's the way it's supposed to be. Those cuts (among many other modifications) were made afterwards, but that's not the way it was originally conceived and filmed.

Hi!
The more this model grows, the harder it get's to manage the whole thing, so I've spent a few days putting everything in order: I've named every single object and material in the scene, I've put everything in layers, and so on...
Now, before I start texture-mapping the car I think I should first stablish the materials/shaders I'm going to use, so after doing a little bit of research I've come up with some nice glass, tinted-plastic and car-paint material. This is what I have so far:

Hi!
Ok, it's time for a new update. To begin with, I made the graphics of the spinner:
http://www.sendoa-bergasa.com/gallery/blade_runner/wip/decals_sample.jpg
I used 3ds max to make them. They were then exported as vectors in order to tweak them in CorelDraw before I merged them into Photoshop. After that I started working on the surface of the car by adding some rust and dirt. It's a slow process because there's a lot of surface to cover and I don't want to go too far with the weathering, so I have to be careful. This is what I've done so far:
http://www.sendoa-bergasa.com/gallery/blade_runner/wip/spinner_wip_194.jpg
http://www.sendoa-bergasa.com/gallery/blade_runner/wip/spinner_wip_195.jpg
http://www.sendoa-bergasa.com/gallery/blade_runner/wip/spinner_wip_196.jpg
There's still a lot of tweaking and refining to do, but it gives me an idea of where I'm going.
C&C are welcome :)
(BTW, there seems to be something odd going on. In the computer I use to do my 3D stuff those renders looked much more contrasty, while in this PC they look a bit washed-out.)

I must say that this is an outstanding model. Your attention to the small details is amazing. I did two versions of the Spinner myself back in 2005 and 2007, but your version has much finer detail and texturing. Did you use the blueprints form Spinner Dokuhan?

I'm glad to see you over here. I know about your Spinner, in fact, one of the very first pics I got when looking for reference in Google was a render of your's. I read somewhere that you were working on some FX shots for a BR-based fan-film but that was some time ago. What happened to that project? are you still working on it?
As for the blueprints, I used the ones available on the net as well as a set of more accurate blueprints provided to me by cobywan. I don't know who the author of those is, but I believe it's cobywan himself.
Thank's again and I hope to see you on this boards more often :)
Update on the current status of the model: I've already started texturing the interior and I expect to post some renders by the end of the next week. I'm not having any major issues so far but the seats seem like they are going to be the most challenging part, I'll leave them for the end.

Time to get back to this project!
The Spinner needs a pilot, so I've modeled a low-poly character to put inside. I managed to get a couple of good reference pics that show in great detail the uniforms of the policemen from BR so it's quite close to the film. The model is very simple and I know there are some anatomical issues -specially in the arms and hands- but with proper textures, I believe it'll look good enough.
This is the finished model, next I will start texturing it:

great job on the details sir! is that a pure high poly mesh or lowpoly hul+normal map?
shoulders could be larger and the elbow should be lower in the arm. (forearm is shorter than upper arm.) the arms are a bit long too.
arms in rest position, the fingertips are about one hand above the knee. yours look too low.
the hands dont look so bad ;)
i'd give him big gloves. like police bikers:

still 2 or 3 things. allow me to do a quick paintover
http://www.nicepixel.eu/preview/paintover.jpg
also, you'll need 2 or 3 more sections in the forearm (or else, it will go wrong when you'll rig the forearm twist)

Hi!

Thank you! If you are talking about the Spinner, there's no normal-mapping involved. There's a bump map subtly applied, however, to enhance some details.

I made a few changes based on your notes. I appreciate the time you took in doing that paintover, it's very helpful.
Anyway, since the character is made up of just a few polygons it requires detailed textures to meke it look interesting. To add that extra detail I started working on the bump map -which is almost finished- and I'm now working on the diffuse map. The specular/reflection map will probably be the last one, since it's the least important one in this particular model. This is what I have so far:

The render setup is very simple actually: I'm using mental ray with Final Gather enabled at it's lowest quality preset (to speed-up render time), there's a skylight which uses an HDR image (the same image I put on the Enviroment slot of my materials) and a couple of photometric lights. That's for the last set of renders, in the previous ones I used max's standard lights. I'm using raytrace materials + phong shader for the most part except for the matte surfaces where I'm using max's standard material + oren-nayar shader. The polycount is 703,810 polys/1,473,157 tris.
Update on the current status of the pilot: Modeling is finished, texturing is finished, rigging is finished... but skinning/posing it is being a total nightmare. I hand-weighted all the vertices one-by-one but I can't get proper results. I'm not sure if the problem is the mesh itself or that I need to keep adjusting the weights even more. I'm affraid I'm not going to be able to complete this part of the project in a satisfactory way, so my other choice is to find an alternative method :(
Any ideas?

Would you be able to give me a breakdown of how you made the blue shader for your spinner? Im trying to study how you did it but struggling! Looks phenomenal!

Hi gigsywigsy!
For the blue shader I'm using a Raytrace material with the reflections set to fresnel and the IOR at a value of 1.7 if I remember correctly. There's a Falloff map in the diffuse slot set to Perpendicular/Parellel. In the second color swatch I'm using pure black, and in the firt one blue (or whatever color you want the surface to be). The look of this type of surfaces depends a lot on the enviroment they are reflecting so putting an HDR map in the enviroment slot will greatly enhance it. Also you can combine the reflections with specular highlights or just use pure reflections, that's up to you.
You could achieve similar or even better results using MR's Car Paint or Autodesk Metallic Paint shaders which do essentialy the same but with a lot more features like flakes.
I hope this was of any help.
in max skin modifier, theres a paint weight. you select the bone you want, tweak the setings (by default weight is set on 1. which is way too much. .2 or .3 is the way to go), kick off the blend wieght option, and start painting. paint a half, and let the symetry (past blue to green verts) do the other one. it works pretty good.
also, while skinning your character, be sure to always have him animated over a few frames, in a sort of extreme aerobic/gymnastic. this way, you can see immediately what and when is wrong, and fix it easily.

I'm pretty much done with this poroject but I just wanted to show you how this whole thing turned out. I finished the pilot, and even rigged it. Unfortunately I was unaable to properly skin it and therfore I couldn't pose it to fit in the Spinner. This is the fully modeled and textured mesh:

I also spent some time modeling and texturing a cityscape meant to be rendered as a full 360º enviroment map. The final image was a 32-bit float 6260x3130 EXR file that I could use to get nice reflections and a consistent lighting (using IBL techniques). Here's a clamped version of the full size map:

(Cilck on the imge to see it in full size)
And here's the EXR image in action: Not the most impressive render in the world but makes the Spinner look very similar to how it looked in the film.

And this is it: modeling, texturing and rigging all done. It's ready now for doing some still images or animations.

Wow congratulations on the finished project ! I agree with IRML that it's one of the best stuff that was around here. The last render is just unbeliveably cool :thumb:

Nice! :o
Of all the SF vehicles out there
this one and the Tumbler tie for
first place. Look forward to more
renders!
