Last night I started work on my viper again, I dont have the new renders here to show the work on the fuselage, but since the server ate my last thread, heres a few pics to remind you of what I have so far.

Some of these links are window stretching so I have left them as is for easier reading.
Mate that is some nice work you have done there. I love the old BSG vipers. the only other fighter that cames this close cool are the ones form Space Above and Beyond!

Good to see your back on it, nice stuff...:thumb: Love the composite too BTW.:flippy: Did you ever get round to finishing the Raider?..
biotech
6th Jul 2006, 17:42
The radier is still on my to finish list, along with just about everything else I have ever started and still have on my hard drive.
biotech
6th Jul 2006, 17:48
Anyway, now I am home, a few quick renders of the fuselage, nothing too fancy, I had to split this section off to its own file to be able to work with it, the other file is so slow now, even with the windows turned to bounding boxes and most bits hidden.
Darth Malice
6th Jul 2006, 17:56
Looks good. Are the panels 100% textured?..
Be cool if you could get back to the raider some time too...:flippy:
man see is looking sweet! what the ploy count on this now?
biotech
6th Jul 2006, 18:11
No the panels are all modelled, I'll have to get back to you on the polycount
biotech
6th Jul 2006, 18:13
458,000!
And she still needs a cockpit interior and pilot.
biotech
6th Jul 2006, 18:21
Merged the textured fuselage back in with the rest of the ship for a couple of renders, the dark side one doesnt show much, but I thought I would include it anyway, as it looks cool!
Darth Malice
6th Jul 2006, 18:25
Damn 450k polys. Can see why you need to use bounding boxes. Looks real sweet with the back end included now...:thumb:
biotech
6th Jul 2006, 18:35
Thanks, and although it took about 7 minutes to render, this next image might show where some of those polys have gone, the very observant of you might notice the cockpit rivits.
Darth Malice
6th Jul 2006, 18:40
****... Are there rivets all over, or just the cockpit?.. I`m guessing there`s quite a few polys used on those beautiful engines too.
biotech
6th Jul 2006, 18:51
Just the cockpit, yeah the engines have a lot of polys, each surface is chamfered.

Darth Malice
6th Jul 2006, 18:57
Cool, how many polys per rivet?..
biotech
6th Jul 2006, 19:02
I'm not that sure to be honest, been a while since I made them.
Darth Malice
6th Jul 2006, 19:20
Hehe, I usually just use a 5 sided polygon with a top. The top being tapered. Seems to do the job fine without using to many polys.

This is exquisite modeling! But why does everyone who does an old school viper add such heavy dirt  looks great none the less
Larsen
6th Jul 2006, 23:25
WOW... very nice mate:thumb:... I hate the fact that max gets so damn slow when hitting the 400-500k polycount:(... lightwavers don't seem to have that problem:eek:
JeffrySG
7th Jul 2006, 04:50
Great job! The model came out really amazing, and the textures look really slick. I really like the specular map you have on the front section and in my mind it has just the right amount of dirt on the ship...

Thanks for the comments guys.
Probably wont get to work on this again tonight, maybe at the weekend.
she is looking dam fine mate!
biotech

Thanks, I am kicking myself for not finishing it earlier.
I have a good feeling that this is the one to get to 100% finished status.

The Viper from the original BSG series isn't one of my favourite designs, but you've done a fantastic modeling/texturing work. I might even start liking the TOS-Viper :p

Thanks, and congrats on your recent win.

8th Jul 2006, 22:15
The Viper from the original BSG series isn't one of my favourite designsYou must be crazy... j/k. I`ll admit the design is dated compared to todays standards. But I loved this ship as a kid and still do. It always reminded me of a single seat race car, built for speed and ohhhh so sexy.:flippy:

BTW, heres a screencap from the DVD.
The full scale mock ups were never that dirty, but the filming models, grunge city.

Looking great mate. But that pilot just looks a little cartoony. I know you said that he needs a bit more work. I finally got my hand on a copy of the new BSG, I have only watched the first 20 mins. But not to bad so far.

Incredible work. I was 13 when the original series aired, so I'm still hooked on the thing. I think the lighting in your helmet is a little off, though. I remember it giving the pilot's face a blue tint.
biotech
1st Aug 2006, 15:53
Theres a blue tint in the new show, but I am reasonably sure the rope lights glued into the old helmets where either white or yellow.
The pilot is only temporary for now anyway.

Now that is just too beautiful for words... The classic Viper and the Mark II *are* both in my all time favourite top ten list for SF fightercraft. The detailing on this model is just awe inspiring. I can't wait to see it finished!
banzai!
I think you're right about the lights in the old school helmets - I remember them being white myself.

Well, atm I'm redoing the Progeny image, which takes a while to render. Once it's done, I'll make a couple of images. There would have been one the other day, but I was a bit busy unfortunately.

Well I finally have something new to add to this thread.
I have been working on the landing gear, which isnt easy considering the lack of references for these parts online.
If anyone knows the title of an episode where you get a good look at them, let me know, as I do have the DVDs, but I cant go through the entire series to see which ones have good references.
I was also tempted to by a starbuck action figure today to help me with the pilot and helmet.
10 quids a lot of money though.

Woo hoo! An update!
for not having much reference, you really did a great job on the shape of the landing skid - I think there was a site posted recently that had some pretty decent detail photos of the skids on the full scale mock up... gimme a sec to dig up the link... Ah yes... here they are.

You're more than welcome - I just love to see what you're doing with this model. The new skids look stellar, too. I feel pretty safe in saying that this is going to be the seminal TOS Viper mesh. Absolutely love it. =^_^=

Nice pice of work. :)
i don’t know nothing about how you do this and I don’t mean to criticize but...
--The cockpit needs to be able to slide open forward sort of clipped around the nose cone in an L shape grove and it has the front glass panel narrow at the top and wider at the bottom and doesn’t go into a point.
Also the left and right atmosphere intakes are more shaped like a quarter circles and not rounded squares, left and right guns are positioned under the wings.
I don’t know all the tech terms for this but i hope you can muddle through.

27th Dec 2007, 23:57
Perhaps you are thinking of the viper from the new series, either that or every reference I have gathered in the last few years, the DVDs of the show, and the model on my desk are all wrong.

Sorry for bumping my own thread, but I was going to work on the landing gear a bit more tonight, only to find I cant find a version of my model with landing gear anywhere on my external drive, which is a bit of a bugger, at least the rest of the viper is saved.
That sweet viper the other guy is making is making me want to finally finish up mine.
