So, I have the beginnings of my modified control chair. Lots more to come.

It's a mod on a Dental Office Chair. I thought it would be a nice tribute to having my wisdom teeth removed recently. Not much yet, but There is still a lot of work to go.

It looks good . . . for a moment I thought I was in a dentists office . . :D

makes you cringe right?

You could take on the dentist theme and make the controlls also look like dentist tools. A screen that looks a bit like that bright light they have, buttons that remind you of the drills and stuff they have :)

Here is a little more progress. The initial modeling is going a lot faster than expected. I am close to what I want. Then I can begin texturing.
Zabiegly: I thought about that and I will be incorporating certain aspects of the dentist chair to make it seem more familiar but over all it is a control chair and will have displays all over it sort of like the Matrix control chairs the pilots use to jack crew members into the Matrix. I know: lame matrix crossover but that is the best example I can give.

I have a concept drawing, just to let everyone know. I just don't have a way to get it online. I will have it up tomorrow. I have to use my friend's scanner to get it up.

Don't sweat it :) There's plenty of time to get everything together for submission :thumb:

Well, here it is. I finally got a chance to scan it. I had to touch it up in photoshop so you can see what the heck it is. So now everyone sees my sporadic planning I do before I begin a project. Sad, I know.

As you can see, I have already broken away from the original concept because the concept has flaws that I think needed to be fixed. Definately still a work in progress but its getting there.

Ahh right, now that you've got the sketch in there, I can see where you're going with this, quite a cool concept, and yeah this is why it's better sometimes to sketch things out first.. it gives you stronger lines, much easier than simply drawing in 3d space from thin air. I like the lines of your chair :D

I like the sketch - looks almost like a horizontal version of my first go at this :D The keypad is a little cumbersome though. Perhaps do a search for one handed keyboards as one of those might fit the design a little better

I love multi monitor setups . . . this is gonna be good I can tell.

Thanks everyone, I think this is coming along nicely. I am glad everyone else thinks so too.
Spudmonkey: I took your advice and found a much better one handed keyboard and modified it to suit the chair. Thanks for the idea. If I had gone with mine it would have sucked.

Looks excellent, you must be just about finished modeling! Time to light and texture :D

Yes, I am Tobian. This is the hard part though. I don't really know how I want to texture it. I am thinking leather or suede for the seats but I will see what kind of texture I can pull outof my hat.

tobian
18th Jun 2007, 20:52
Hmm suede will be a very hard surface to get right, leather should be easier.. See what surface types you can get your hands on and have a play I guess :D

thorthefifth
18th Jun 2007, 21:01
That's the plan, I am not very good at texturing so this will be a learning excercise. I just hope I can come up with some good looking fabric. Thanks Tobian.

See if anything here (http://mayang.com/textures/) helps. Not much leather on there, and you're going to have to make whatever texture you chose seamless, so photographic textures aren't always useful without heavy modification :S

What software are you using there: If you're not using Lightwave, I'm not sure I can offer anything other than general advice :D

Thanks, Tobian. I am using 3DS Max. I am almost happy with the texture I have for my leather seats. I still have a few adjustments and then I will post my updated texture. This one is where I was a couple of days ago. I haven't been able to work on it because I've been busy but I am nearly there. After the leather seats it will be a piece of cake to texture. I hope.

Well, here it is: The final leather texture. I am very happy with how this thing came out. I made a leather crack brush by hand and applied many brown and black layer variation of paint in Photoshop with the brush. The final texture is 7500x7500 which is the largest ive ever worked with. What do you guys think?

Edit: Here is a higher quality, light traced image with better detail.

Hmm could use a little more shine, but the colour component is really nice! You could also use more subdivisions on your mesh, it's looking a little segmented in places.

and yeah, you should be finished soon enough!

thorthefifth
21st Jun 2007, 16:33
Yeah, the segmented places are messing with me a little bit. The shine will get better. I was mostly worried about the color and texture because I haven't tried something like this before. It actually turned out how I wanted. Thanks, Tobian.

Very nice so far. I like the clean lines an clean modeling technique. Looks very functional! :thumb:

I also like the leather texture too, but I agree, it needs more specularity and shine. Keep up the good work! :flippy:

Thanks, CGandy75. I am working on rendering an update which is smoother and much shinier. Granted, to show off the shininess I had to add a few extra lights but that doesn't degrade the render that much. 2 hours so far rendering and it's about half finished. Will post the result as soon as I get home from work tonight.

After 5 hours 35 minutes and 10 seconds of rendering, I have a fairly believable leather(at least to me it is)

At that render time I think i am going to have to make sure the seat is not visible to the camera to save on render time. That destroyed my computer.
What do you guys think of it though?

I thought you guys might like to have a leather texture to add to your libraries so here is my leather texture. I didn't use it in my model but it was made the same way. If you do use it just say you got it from thorthefifth and we'll be straight. Hope you guys like it.

PS- This is not a seamless texture. Sorry.

tobian
22nd Jun 2007, 10:04
35 minutes! I'm lucky if my renders take less than 2 hours :D

Nice looking texture, and yes the seat now looks much better. The only thing I'd say is if you could perhaps detail the seams to the leather, either as a bump map, or modelled in?

it might be good if that console arm, with the control panels was extendible, as it might not suit every working configuration?

thorthefifth
22nd Jun 2007, 19:56
trust me it is. I have been doing some tests on the pivot and telescoping of the controls and I will post some configurations to show the range of the motion. Thanks, Tobian

Excellent, you could include some close-ups on your composite of the final chair maybe? Looking forward to seeing the final entry! :)
