chaoscope is a fractual program that also renders. Pretty nice stuf but it's tough on render times.

and a little photoshopping of course.
but render times arnt that bad for me, 1 minute average for those.
ill get you one today, promise. lol currently working on my WIP (http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/3d-wips/3111-future-sg-fighter.html#post61217) so thats keeping me busy, and also the occasional enemy territory.:thumb:

Dallidas
30th Jul 2006, 02:23
for chaoscope?
Ozylot
30th Jul 2006, 02:28
Certainly... Your pics inspired me to try chaoscope, Im using it currently to develop nebulas. Just thought it might be interesting to see how you made them?
Dallidas
30th Jul 2006, 02:32
share my secrets you say....NEVER!! lol
sure why not. I use unrave(the type of math formula i think)l for most of these and just mess with the sliders lol. I usually use plasma blue green color maps.
oh and start with atleast 1600x1200 it can look crappy but if you scale it to 800x600 its nice lookin lol. plus i crop alot of the image off to get what i want.

Simple layer transparency in Paint Shop. I would assume that Photoshop would have something comparable.

With some modifications, I had some nebula backgrounds in mind.

I haven't been able to get this freakin program to work right. It might be the age of my computer, but it doesn't render even though it says it's rendering. Basically, the little clock ticks down and nothing happens.
Dallidas
1st Aug 2006, 04:22
umm....i dont know whats going on then. have you watied for the timer to go down all the way? because it changes in stages, not continously.
evil_genius_180
1st Aug 2006, 04:28
Yeah, it was all stopped for about 10 minutes when I got pissed and closed the program. However, I changed a system setting or two and I'm trying again. I'll let ya know....

Here is a couple more I just got... I see potential. :D
evil_genius_180
1st Aug 2006, 05:37
What do you mean when you say you just got them. Did you make them? Or is there like some crazy place online where you can download these things?
Ozylot
1st Aug 2006, 05:45
Its not so much as working to make them, as it is more like searching to find them. Hitting the F3 button randomizes the settings and produces crazy swirls etc...
Plus too you can manually search for fractals by using the sliders on the right side of the screen. the other thing thats interesting is that the autosearch always finds a stable fractal (unstable ones dont show up). If you click and drag on the preview image you find that the fractal image is actually a 3D mesh that you can rotate with impunity. Totally by accident I found this fractal, rotated it and came up with something that looks alot like a bird.
evil_genius_180
1st Aug 2006, 05:57
Yeah, I think when I tried this thing the other day, I played with the sliders too much is why it didn't render. Because it only took a few minutes and did jack ****. This time, I left it the way it came after I hit F3 and it's been chugging away for a long time. It looks like it will soon be done, though. :thumb:

EG180, If your having problems with getting an image the reduce the amount of Interations down to a useable level. Start at 50000 and go upwards. really great renders start coming out at around 2,000,000,000+.
Oh and also the LIGHT, PLASMA, & SOLID settings are render hogs so test it with GAS first.
Dallidas
1st Aug 2006, 16:43
nice image there ozy! looks like a swan i have one that looks like a bow tie and a galaxy
@evil genius180- it only renders when there are little dots all over the place, not when its gray.;)
@chrono- im assuming you use it also? if you do you cant post some stuff.:thumb:
chrono
1st Aug 2006, 17:34
Yeah I used to play with it years ago. But I just uploaded the newer version. Mostly I make stuff in solid to evoke my imagination later and generally it takes about 15-45 minutes to render up because of the settings and using SOLID during rendering.
Just a little tip/reminder. You can set your render so you can make a panoramic background or HDR image. ;)
Dallidas

how do you set it to HDR??
chrono
1st Aug 2006, 17:54
You don't. You set the render up to render yourself a high rez shot to use in your HDR lighting.
chrono

The 'comet'-thing was merely a layered & filtered image of the SOLID with a GAS renders. But like I said I normally do SOLID rendering for other things. :)

evil_genius_180
1st Aug 2006, 22:44
I'll have to try solid rendering in a while. I've only tried gas and liquid so far.
I'm not sure what to call this, but here's my first Chaoscope render that might be worthy of showing to anybody. I thought it looked cool once I teaked it. However, in retrospect, it looks like a malevolent space shrimp or somthing. I might do a render later with the Columbia shooting its laser cannons at this and the beams passing right through it.

Very cool!

2nd Aug 2006, 07:56
Ok, so this looked pretty cool and I thought I'd play with it. This is just my take on one of the preset projects that came with it. I haven't figured this thing out yet. Sort of looks like a stellar nursey to me. :)

Is there any way to do a pic in Chaoscope with more than one attractor? Or do you have to render them all individually and then mix 'em up in a program like Photoshop or Gimp?
Ozylot
3rd Aug 2006, 00:28
Yes you are limited to 1 attractor. however some attractors have way more options then others. one of em has like 20 some sliders while another only has 5 or 6. Each one has its own particular style though.
evil_genius_180
3rd Aug 2006, 00:34
Yeah, I know how the attractors work. That's all I did yesterday and part of today was search for stuff to use in Trek pics. I've got one rendering now with a Chaoscope and Gimp background.
That's all right, I'll just mix and match them in Gimp. All I have to do is the same thing I did with my background for the pic I'm rendering. I got rid of the background by selecting the color and did an alpha transparency for the rough edges. I should have the pic up in a couple hours or so. It'll take a while as I have close to 40 lights in the scene.
Tovette
3rd Aug 2006, 02:02
I'm new to chaoscope but I wasn't aware you could add lights. How do you do that?

I'm new to chaoscope but I wasn't aware you could add lights. How do you do that?
Yeah, sorry for the confusion on that one. I'm using a Chaoscope render in my background for a render in trueSpace. The lights to which I was referring are in trueSpace. I'm new to Chaoscope too, so I'm still finding things out about it myself. :)

The 'trick' to that is to keep an element from the orginal background picture, yet have it slightly different. If you lock all but one of the settings from the orginal image and search you should find something 'close' to give you a good foreground image.

Yeah, I know how to do it, I just wanted to see if he can do it. It's relatively simple using Gimp, though I think he has Photoshop, which will make it easier. :thumb:

Nice pic but you need to blend it into the background a little better. Assuming you used layers. try adjusting the layer mode. There are too many dark edges that don't look quite right.

that stuff is amazing. Is there any way to animate these? possible slowly incrimenting the values in the equations used to generate them and rendering each new value? I reckon it would be cool to see them growing or changing. :P ;) hint much?

You might have to write us a short tutorial
Have you tried putting a starfield in the background?
Dallidas
22nd Mar 2007, 00:06
Well there isnt much too it Anything that can be taught that is. Render out something in Apophysis or chaoscope(wait 4 hours) then take it into photoshop and mess with it until you get something cool. ill post the original image for ya though. resized and dropped in quality but you get the idea:thumb:
as for a starfield, i've done it in the past, but most of the time you can hardly see the stars, unless they are huge and really really bright

this stuff would be cool if it was animatable somehow.
Dallidas
22nd Mar 2007, 00:17
yes, it would! but at 2-4 hours a render, i dont see it happening. Unless i did really crappy/small renders.

Well you could map it on proxy 3d geometry and animate a camera round it or use a noise on the geometry or something like that.
But I guess it would be quite hard modelling something which suits the images. Maybe if I find time I might try something.

Wow, great stuff here. You are very talented indeed and the two images above clearly illustrate that amount of work needed in Photoshop as well as you apparent gifts in the arts department. Looks like I need to download this a play with it some. Any of you folks played with POV-Ray and the Galaxy Include file by Chris Colefax.

thanks kgoku, but in my eyes they are far from perfect, but thanks!
@pepperman- id ont want to make this sound bad somehow but its not really that hard. Apophysis is very useful in getting the basic idea down(see pic i posted) but the rest is just color correction brightness contrast and all that jazz.

I like that last one..
Well there isnt much too it Anything that can be taught that is. Render out something in Apophysis or chaoscope(wait 4 hours) then take it into photoshop and mess with it until you get something cool. ill post the original image for ya though. resized and dropped in quality but you get the idea:thumb:

I just found this and think its amazing. I've got the program now but would like a few pointers on how to make awesome stuff like this if possible.

Dude those are sweet. Those are with chaoscope right?
Dallidas
25th Jun 2009, 15:27
No those were done in apophysis. Chaoscope can only output 800x600. Atlest that's how it was the last time i used it.
Tovette

is Apophysis free? It looks sweet.
Ozylot
25th Jun 2009, 19:12
Oh wow...I love the purple one! That would make a great background nebula!
BTW Chaoscope can do bigger resolutions. All the way up to 2048x1536...perhaps bigger, but not sure after that.
