IRML
17th May 2006, 20:16
well it's time for me to post this here, I started this a long time ago, many of the renders you'll see here are between 1 and 2 years old, all my renders were uploaded to a site which was on aceman's server so I lost them, I've got a limit of 5 uploads at the moment so I'll do another post with the rest

most of the images in this post should be pretty self explanitory, there's one of the deflector and the details you see in first contact, one with a fully modelled lifeboat (it's 100% complete now but there are some details missing in that render, it's the best I could dig up) there's one with the nacelle details close up, one with most of the models in the display cabinet (there are a few more that I completed later) and one with the baked illumination for the observation lounge, the illumination map has been updated since that render, LWs image baker was crap back then so I spent 21 hours rendering out one that wasn't grainy

more to come...

Jedilaw
17th May 2006, 20:19
Yikes. You even modeled the models inside the model. How very meta!

You just know you're going to get someone asking you to do a tutorial on this one...

That's awesome. However, the specular maps on the nacelle seem a bit too much.

Nice.... Cant wait to see more!

IRML
17th May 2006, 20:21
That's awesome. However, the specular maps on the nacelle seem a bit too much.well they were like 2 years ago, remember I lost all the recent renders and there's not much chance I'll get them back, so the model has changed a lot since

well I can't really comment on the accuracy but the modeling and renders look beautiful! amazing job mate!!! well done!

IRML
17th May 2006, 20:40
alright here's the next lot of images, one with the latest render of the saucer that I can find but even that one is a couple of months old, still a big thanks to REL777 for digging that one up for me, there's a proper render of the observation lounge, a detail shot of the torpedo launcher on the saucer, a render of the finished lifeboat with all the details and textures in place, and a full render of the ship so you can get an idea of it, but that's quite an old one too

anyway just to point out any errors you might see in these renders will be fixed now because they are still quite old, also I did have a render of the lounge with some display textures on the screens, but you can probably guess I lost that one

Everywhere I look there is nothing but awesomeness!

IRML
17th May 2006, 20:51
here's the final set of attachments for now, one very old one just to show you the stencil details on the saucer panels, which didn't show up on the render in the last post, and another is an animation of the gasses in the bussards, for this I used procedural textures and surface thickness gradients, then some point lights and sub surface scattering, I think it gives a pretty good effect of 3D gass in there

hopefully the next time I post a render it'll be an up-to-date one

It's the only interior that you never see. What's the poly count on that thing?

IRML

the observation lounge is about 40000 faces, most of that is the chairs and the little ship models, the rest of the ship is about 450000 so far, the lifeboats are about 9000 each, which will be a lot when you consider there's 180 on the whole ship

Aaaah finally she puts in an appearance here. Well you know what I think, it's a load of rubbish. Really, it is. I mean, you're out by at least a millimetre all over the place! Really quite shoddy.

Then again, I could be joking. So it's actually not too bad.

Meshfan
17th May 2006, 23:23
IRML, you have got to be THE BEST modeler on Sci Fi Meshes. I pratically pissed in my shorts while looking at your models and renders! I can't believe you rendered the interior of the Enterprise E as well as the exterior!

I can't wait till you finish! Modeling and rendering does not get better than this.

Hot DAMN man! This looks quite simply incredible...Question though - With the baked textures, how long does it take to render an exerior close-up of the saucer with the interior showing? (Similar to the shots in the first lot of attachments...).

How the hell you are going to render this thing once it's finished I don't know...But at the rate you're going, but 2010 when the thing's finished, we'll probably be using 12-core 16Ghz CPUs anyway. ;)

Seriously, this is mind blowing work.

IRML
18th May 2006, 11:10
it doesn't take very long, depends on the lighting setup really, but adding the lounge makes virtually no hit on any render times at all

Thank you! I reposted the thread, it's in my signature.

John Eaves, your design for the Ent E is the coolest Star Trek ship yet.

Jedilaw

Allow me to second that opinion! I'd go so far as to rank the Enterpise E among the best starship designs in any series. John, I would put you right up there with Joe Johnston, Nilo Rodis, and Matt Jeffries for starship designers.

Returning to slightly more OT matters: when are we going to see large-scale renders of the entire Mesh as it currently exists? We've seen lots of stunning bits and pieces, but I am itching to see the whole ship.

Controlling necro-posting(posting in threads not updated for about a month) is to allow for people to get their new projects viewed before it becomes second & third page news within a matter of minutes. This is something that happens on all busy boards.

So don't stop posting! Just be abit more moderate about things. ;)

Guys, the reason you will not find any mention of Necroposting in the forum TOS (Terms of Service) - Read: The Rules, is because the are not banned. Some people hate them, sure. But think about this:

You guys have now spent 11(!!) posts and an entire page bitching / complaining / discussing a single necro post instead of discussing the actual topic of the thread. Isn't THAT more stupid than the actual exsistance of the necro-post in the first place?

You get annoyed by necro-posting? Fine...Do one of two things:

1) Read the post. Get annoyed. Leave the thread. Simply leave it.

Or

2) Send the necro-poster a PM and talk to them about your dislike of the practise...You'll find that many 'offenders' won't even know they've done something that some of you consider 'wrong'. The result? No polluting of the thread with that crap and possibly one less necro-poster in the future.

Please don't go expecting the staff to be handing out heavy-handed warnings on this issue, because unless the other Admins feel very strongly that this issue should be treated with the same level of severity as abusive posts, mesh theft and personal attacks, it isn't going to happen.

The thread is yours, IRML. :)

IRML, I think what you've done is amazing to say the least. I have been toying around with modeling this ship in lightwave and have wonderful reference photos, but am having some difficulty and was wondering if you could give me a couple pointers. I've been using spline patch modeling and the results are less than desirable, especially in areas such as that I've outlined in your render. What is you process in terms of modeling a ship like this. And the model looks so seamless, I was wondering if all the polygons matched up in the corner areas?

Thank you

Carl

IRML
11th Aug 2006, 11:29
don't think so, I would have to cut out a square to UV anyway unless I wanted one massive texture for all the decals, which would be a waste of memory, so this way I just have the polys cut into the hull which will ensure the details always stay sharp and won't eat into any texture memory

I was thinking more in the line of one detail per texture thats what I was thinking. But tstill that will be an idea for the registries only so other people can put in there own registry if ya planning to release it to us.

Other than that ya still do a great job its only the opinion of mine I am just worried about the registries only the registries once they are modded in there will be no way to change them.

Yes JD - don't be a donkey, bad for your health.

As for modelled registries - there are pro's and cons either way. I think in this case - that being the greatly increased quality of the registries and other labels - modelling them is the best way to go. Otherwise you would have to use a pointlessly large texture to come close to the quality of the others (and given the overall quality of the model, if you can't get up close and personal its the wrong choice)

Well, the physical ILM model used was shorter as the nacelles were moved forwards for some reason, and there were a few things changed or added, probably just like uprgades or minor refits I guess (but in reality, the modellers probably couldn't stop tinkering with the design!!!)...

On a side note: Aye, Dave. I'd like to see you work more on her, but it's understandable you've better things to do.

ok one last time...

exactly 6 months ago to this very day I had a hard disk crash, just as I was getting back into modelling this, but that's life I guess

I only recently got this model transferred to a useable computer again, but I have a couple of other models to do for a project I'm committed to right now, once those are done I'll get back to either this or voyager, probably voyager because it's closer to being finished, and because some people just need to be shown how it's done properly :p then i'll do the sovvy

I doubt you'll be seeing any work on this before february, but I didn't loose anything on it in the hard disk crash except some modelling rhythm, so apart from the 6 month gap the model is fine
