Well seeing how there aren't many x-wings on here after the crash I decided to post some pics of mine. Coming along slowly. Most hard parts are done. There's a lot of detailing work left.

In the pictures the laser cannons and R2 are not mine. They're just there to see what things would look like. Also, some parts are not smoothened yet. The cannopy is still unfinished.

Texturing it should be easy once it's done. Every panel seems to be a different color on this ship and seeing how every panel is there on the model...it will be a simple matter of detaching all the panels and texturing them individually :)

Some dimensions are a little off as well, mainly because I like the 'game' xwings better. That means that the main hull is not as wide, the engines are a little bigger and the wings a little longer.

Thanks guys. The fins are not rotor fins...They're like separating fins for whatever's supposed to be behind them. That's what most blueprints seem to have in those engines. Plus star wars is not really that technical. I mean 4 huge intakes and nothing in them. Anything we put in there is pure speculation. I doubt the guys that made the original xwing even thought about it :)

I'm thinking about uploading this one so everyone can use it. I think it's time for an update. The xwings available on most sites are really old.

Well, the engines are done and the main hull. THe laser cannons are almost there. All that's left is detail on the main fuselage and the inside of the wings. Getting there :).

The wings were mirrored in a hurry and rendered so some of the parts touch etc. Also, some of the small details will be changed on the intake parts of the engines for every wing. After that I guess it will get a cockpit and so on.

The panelling on the fusalage is perfect in my opinion. Not to pronounced. There has been a couple of great x-wings that have come through here, and I can tell this is going to be one of them.

Hi,

This is a good start. :thumb:

Take a look at [WIP] StarWars - Incom Corporation T-65 X-Wing (http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/3d-wips/149-wip-starwars-incom-corporation-t-65-a.html)

Thanks. I agree about the paneling. I think most people make it waaaay too pronounced. Not that it doesn't look good but it's a little weird seeing an airplane with 2 inches inbetween the panels.

The xwing will have an R2 unit. I will make it myself probably. There will also be a cockpit and a pilot. I'll get the pilot somewhere else though. I think I already have a couple excellent ones.

As far as textures I think I might make it a 'black' squadron or something. Kinda tired of seeing the same red markings.

Indeed, I very fine detailed mesh! I'm new to SFM, so I have not seen the meshes other users are mentioning.
However, it looks to be the best i've seen around the net in a long time. Keep it going

Usually I don't agree with how people use meshes online...but I have nothing against giving it to people as long as they keep it for themselves. I am inclined to make it public with certain conditions. Like I said originally, I think it's time for an upgrade from all the xwings floating around online from like...94 :)

All details are almost done. If anybody knows a place that has some good xwing pictures to copy some textures from let me know. I hate creating textures from scratch :)

MegaCrazy, how do you get the really fine detail on your 3d model. I work with Cinema 4D but I'm sure the procedures are similar to any other app. Is it a displacement mapping? or are you actually building up polygons. If it's polygons wouldn't the poly count shoot to the moon? Items like grills, or extremely fine datail, raised panels, etc... are what I'm talking about.

If you don't mind sharing ;)

Thanks for any info.

Sorry for the lack of updates here but I've been a little busy lately.

Thanks for the reference links bug. They'll come in handy right about...now :)

allfiredup the panels are 3d. The polygon count is obviously high but the xwing does not have many round shapes so it won't be THAT high. I'm not really paying attention to how many polygons it has. I'm just making it as detailed as possible for close-ups and so on.

I'll have some updated pics in the next couple of days.

I'm using Cinema 4D (8.2) and my X-Wing is completely mesh. Making the panels is alot of cut'n fix :) and alot of patience :)

You've done a remarkable job on the scaling ... particularly with small details, seam depth and widths, etc. Your very good eye is paying off with the overall effect of extreme realism. Looks like you could jump in and fly it. I agree with others -- better than the movie models.:thumb:

megacrazy
30th Aug 2006, 05:46
Well I'm working on the top and rear details. Those things are a pain in the ass. I think I'm going to start making things up :). It's very easy to glue car wheels, turbos and so on a real model using parts from other models. Of course in 3D it's a nightmare. Too much crap to model. So yeah, I am making a car wheel...from the 70's.

About the scale of the details...That's one of the reasons why I started making this xwing. I think I have the xwing made by chrisgfx here or something very similar. Very accurate but low poly and a little off scale on the details. It's all in the details when it comes to realism. The movie models are on the screen for what...2 seconds. They don't need to be crazy like us here :)

As far as reference, I have plenty of pictures of the studio model and a bunch of actual models. The finemolds model is the best dimensions wise. A little small but they got it mostly right.

Here's one of my favourite angles of the xwing.

Thanks for all the comments btw :thumb:

Star Wars models seem to have a lot more "junked" or aged look about them whereas Star Trek models seem very clean. If I were to say which ones were harder to model, I'd say Star Wars because of all the details. Your doing a super fine job, your progression is great, keep up the fine work. :thumb:

Excellent work, right up there with MVerta's take on the X-Wing (about 18mos ago, IIRC).

Out of curiosity, are you using image planes as references while you model? If so, what images are you using? I've looked for references online, and only found one really bad, really inaccurate diagram. Did you scan the instructions from the Finemolds kit?

megacrazy
30th Aug 2006, 18:35
Yeah star trek ships are a lot cleaner and more futuristic looking. Star wars stuff is like WW2 stuff...Very used. I like both.

I don't know if it's worth making all these details high poly...Well at least it will be ready for extreme close ups :) I had to make things up here and there because even the models used in the movie vary a little from one another. The actual models you can buy today are different in some parts from the studio models. Oh well...like I said before I'll make this a litle different from all the other xwings.

Yup scanned the top/side views from the instructions that came with the kit. That and I've built about 5-6 xwings so I know what they look like pretty much :). There are plenty of pictures online...just not decent top/side views I think.

Well the more detail you add to something the better it looks.

This thing is pretty close to being finished now. Some detail is missing on the laser cannons and the inside of the wings. The R2 unit needs to be properly scaled. but that's about it. I'll do the cockpit at the same time as the textures.

Anybody know where to get some shots of the life size xwing cockpit they used in the movie?

Couple shots here from close and far.

That looks great! The details are astonishing. Just to help out a little, ILM used aluminum heat sinks for the details in the engines and cannons. Here's the exact part they used in the 1/24 filming miniatures. Not to hijack, here's a 1/24 scale one that I built that has those.

And guess who is back from the dead :) I wish it was this easy in real life.

Either way, I finally started texturing the xwing. It's slowly getting there. I am going for the white-flat-not too dirty look. I'll be using some different markings, not the usual red stripes. So, if anyone has any particular markings they liked on xwings post a pic.

Again, this will not be red1/2/3/4/5 so no complaining about how this panel is not supposed to be yellow and so on :)
