I did a few experiments with photoshop and this is the first phase of an idea I have in mind. Took me about 2 hours and I'm surprised myself because usually this is not my style as you might know.

thats pretty cool, I like how it looks almost like a vapor around the edges. Very spooky.

I agree with Lord Ravensburg. The vaporous look is very effective and from the direction of the smudging strokes it looks like the reaper is acting like a vacuum and its sort of doing this syphoning. I like it.
I think perhaps you should go back and revisit the fingers though. They don't fit with the style you've got going in the majority of the painting. In this case I think the fingers would do better if they were actually solid black and qausi vaporous themselves. Also the bottom of the reaper looks like it could use some polish to match the cool upper half. If you added more negative space on the bottom sretching upwards you could implay the painted areas as ripped cloth or tattered rags and give it this eerie feel.

Yeah that's way better... He feels short; mostly because his arms 'feel' longer than his legs. Just nitpicking now. Good improvements :)
