View Full Version : 2D Planet
well with my PC messed up and me not able to use any of my 3D tools, I thought I'd venture into 2D for a bit
this was done entirely in photoshop over the last 2 or 3 days, I don't have a tablet but the mouse worked well enough for this - there wasn't many complex brush strokes to deal with
the full image is 8x as big (which should be A3 at 600ppi if I worked it out correct), it was a bit of a pain working at that resolution, I guess I need more ram
crits welcom (but I'm not changing anything :p)

Thats really nice, but I can see what looks like stars through the bottom of the planet.

yeah, awesome work but it does look like half a planet with the stars.

That is freaking beautiful. If you could correct the error with the stars showing through the dark said of the planet, I would fricking header that.

Shush- this is a post-pity planet, and as you can see it's a shadow of its former self. :shiner:
Nice work Davros- slight pity about the stars, should be fixable though. :)

I thought that was dust and rocks around the planet rather than stars, looks great.
My only niggle is that from the angle they appear to be at, you would think the moons would be in the planets shadow and not have any crescents from the sun on them.
I would have loved to have seen the various stages in this images creation.
stars through the planet? you think T is some kind of sucka!?!?
I thought that was dust and rocks around the planet rather than starscorrect, I was hoping the shadows from the planets would give that away
btw it's REALLY clear on my monitor, you can see them all over the place, but if you've got a dark monitor I forgive you

It probably looks like stars because there isn't an obvious dark underside to the planet. Perhaps if you made a clearer delineation between the planet and the background then it would improve the effect - simply extening the visible edge a centimetre or so lower than it currently is may be enough. It's very nice as it is though mate :)

The fact that the sun is really defuse should be the clue most people need to know the planet is surrounded by dust.

Now, no surprise I am a sucker for planets and this one is gorgeous. I too would like to see a darker shadow on the ringed one. Excellent job, nice use of color space too

It's a very clean, but sterile work.

think foggy silhouette, the image did go lower, but I cropped it down because there's nothing more to see there
It's a very clean, but sterile work.I don't really know what that means, but thanks

I guessed they probably weren't meant to be stars, but they still look like stars all the same, i don't think that effect works that well. The rest is excellent though.

IRML,
By being "clean" I mean that it's well executed and without obvious errors. Most 2D digital work is like this because the computer cleans up after the person.
And by "sterile" I mean that it's emotionless & motionless. There isn't any drama nor high's or low's at all! It feels like it's a background painting that is intended to be very emotionally flat so that the viewer is focused on what's happening in the foreground.

That's superb mate :) Doesn't look sterile in the slightest - it looks serene. Nothing for me to crit on that really - the dustiness works really well.

Dave, dust/stars thing makes sense now you've explained it, but it wasn't immediately apparent. It could probably be sorted out by making the "black" bits a tad darker, and accentuating the "shadow" caused by the moon on the particles- the effects are there, but very subtle, and I've viewed it on two monitors now. It's certainly better on my (better calibrated Adobe RGB 1998) home monitor than on my crappy work item, but still very subtle. :)
Chrono: I can see your point there, but the filename (Planet_Matte.jpg) suggests to me that this is intentional. I don't know though, I'm just speculating. :)

One thing does occur to me, the rings that are between the planet and the sun should be illuminated, as they are at the top, at the bottom too.
But leaving them dark is an artistic choice, and it is art after all.
Tovette

yeah now that i look at it in that manner i can see how it could be dust and not stars. I think the manner in which the dust looks is too close to the starfields and it get a bit confusing...

Print it out nice and big, and unfurl it from the roof of parliament in a protest over the lack of the 6pm sci-fi slot, or something :p

But leaving them dark is an artistic choice, and it is art after all.well the planet is meant to be 'waist deep' in the space dust, I can see now it's not very clear but then again I'm not a good painter (you wouldn't see the lower part of the rings much anyway because the bottom of the planet would only be about 50 pixels above the bottom of the image)

It feels like it's a background painting that is intended to be very emotionally flat so that the viewer is focused on what's happening in the foreground.well actually it started out as the background of a larger painting, but I couldn't be bothered to do the foreground :p
maybe when I get my PC fixed I'll return to it and finish it with some 3D work

I think the manner in which the dust looks is too close to the starfields and it get a bit confusing...yeah guys, interestingly if you tilt your head to the left and look at the image it becomes a bit clearer, I thought about making it landscape because of this, but the composition really fails that way
*edit* just noticed this

feel free, I have the 10k PSD but it's uncropped and doesn't have the dust, maybe you'll like it more that way lol

You know, another angle that could work is if you vertically flipped the image. They would provide some great compisitional options. :D

I've deliberated quite a bit on this piece, and after some good amount of thought and looking at the actual PSD, I was boggled by the detail that was lost in the thread post. In my professional opinion, I think this piece is just great. Sure, it has some iffy areas but it's mood is vast. A lack of primary focus in the foreground, while a risky move, was executed successfully. It just really pulls one's imagination in and invites you to play. I know that my creativity was spiked when I saw this piece and I know other's were too.
So welcome to the header, IRML :)

Great piece, IRML! And, I saw that it was dust/debris around the planet the first time I saw the image. This has a wonderful hand painted feel that we many times lose when doing everything in 3d. Reminds me of some of the great airbrushed space scene paintings I used to love to look at when I was a youngin' :)

BTW - I identified the specs as "dust" almost immediately. You might be right - Maybe it's a monitor brightness thing. ;)
