Well as many have noticed, I haven’t posted much lately on my Coventry Bridge (http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/3d-wips/18-uss-coventry-bridge.html?highlight=coventry) project.

Reason for that is I needed to test a few ideas first. And I figured, use someone else’s design as the guinea pig. That and Galen asked me to help.

So anyway... More Images Are Here (http://web.mac.com/morganzacd5p/iWeb/Countdown%20Five%20Productions/Legacy%20Bridge.html)

Ill have some high res images loaded to SFM tonight. As always questions and C&C are welcome.

Sweet! But, as designers under eachother... I'd suggest you use a similar shape as the centre part of the console behind the captain's raised level as an endcap of that console, and blank out the part in between. I think that would look sweet!

Countdown5
29th Aug 2006, 22:30
Yea... Not quite done with that area yet. Could try a smaller version of it to cap off the end.

Awsome work Countdown5 much better then the one I made for Kaden and Galen.

Hope when one of them visited here will give ya a good comment I love the progress on the bridge.

Oh... You did the original build. For the most part its measurement for measurement off yours. All I did was throw in some detail mods. But its definitely one of the more interesting bridge designs Iv had to work on.

Thanks

tooie32
23rd Sep 2006, 17:38
Wel Galen made the origional design but only the top view made the mesh version which it didn't turn out really good.

At least yours is much better than mine.

As long as they didn't do any changes to the bridge design that I didn't know of.

But we will find out once one of them starts posting.

I do still have the the top view sketch of the bridge but I lost my mesh one during the computer data transphere from the old computer to the new.

If ya want the sketch if ya don't have it let me know.

Countdown5
27th Oct 2006, 01:28
Oh... and do you want what i call a "Legacy Wall" no pun intended

kaden
27th Oct 2006, 02:59
what you could do is just drop the main bridge area down a bit so it fits and have ramp ups into the conference room and steps up into the ready room.

or just go off my bridge model since it all fits lol

Countdown5
27th Oct 2006, 03:04
Well now that I redid the shell the bridge will fit fine. It only needed 2 feet of relative space.
See... It gave me just enough space to fit this station in properly.

http://web.mac.com/morganzacd5p/iWeb/Countdown%20Five%20Productions/Legacy%20Bridge_files/Picture%206_2.jpg

and I thought I would lower the Observation Lounge and have steps to keep that waist level window sill.

27th Oct 2006, 05:15
Hmmm...just a comment, please forgive me...I was just wondering if you'd want a Captain's Yacht or a (Post-TNG) equivalent of a warp sled's passenger compartment (with it's own direct-entry docking collar & armored concealed shuttlebay,) connected directly to a corridor that connects the main bridge to the executive officer's office, (the conference room, the head, etc.) Basically, an easy-access (warp-capable) escape pod. Just an idea.

Countdown5
27th Oct 2006, 05:29
Not sure... Would the designers give a ruling on that?

Galen
27th Oct 2006, 05:32
Hmm, the ship does already have a warp capable executive runabout, but its located directly under the bridge, 12 decks down LOL.. Maybe 1 of the turbo shafts could lead direct access to it?

BTW, looking good ther Zack. Very very good :) Lol, a Legacy wall would be nice, but I have no idea what her predecessor line would be. BTW, i noticed that the Ready room area has 2 entry doors. I'm thinking 1 would suffice. Maybe the other door could lead to the yacht lift or to the toilet. But that means we'll have to put a wall at the ready room, right after where the roof glass view port will be located

looking at the bridge from the top facing aft, the right door of the ready rooms doors, is actually the turbolift. the details are on the ship model, the bottom right door way next to the viewscreen is another turbolift, the left side though is acess to the forward rooms or another ramp or stairs down to deck 2. here is a pic anyways:

No problem, simple fix.

Anyway, I got the turbolifts done for the most part. Still some detailing to do on them though. Also readjusted the layout for the new ortho map, and roughed out the ceiling trim.

Kaden, Galen, let me know if you like the style of these adjustments . Once i hear from you Ill start cutting into them for the panels and lighting.

nice...
@picard102: the bridge is at the very top... An access wouldn't make much sense...

Starscream
29th Oct 2006, 11:04
I think Picard102 means the turbolift itself, not the shaft... as I recall, in TNG you could exit the lift via a hatch in the ceiling - something they forgot in Voyager, when they installed the overly elaborate lighting there instead.

move the view port over 3 meters and you hve ure toiliet. maybe an emergency transporter pad in the ready room, leading to escape pods and shuttlebays?

Hey Seanr... Always ment to ask you. What kinda texture, if any, do you usualy add to the main color on your bridge sets? (Static, Diffuse Clouds, ect)

Hellsgate
30th Oct 2006, 05:49
I wouldn't want the Captain's Yacht twelve decks down...I'd want to run down a hallway with forcefields activating behind me & double/triple-thick duranium doors slamming shut as my commbadge activates a series of stubborn security measures & the aft of the bridge module is the last thing I see as I streak away at high impulse or warp before a self destruct sequence blows up the mothership.

I'd want my escape shuttle just meters away, on the same deck, embedded in the top of the saucer in place of the conference room in the rear area of the bridge. The Main (& Battle) Bridge are themselves big conference rooms so why have more of them?

Starscream
30th Oct 2006, 18:18
Because your idea is *cough*fanboyish*cough* overkill? Honestly Hellsgate, I read that at first and thought you must be joking...

picard102
30th Oct 2006, 22:00
Ya, I get the doors, and the forcefeilds, but being activated by the comm-badge. That's just silly.

Countdown5
30th Oct 2006, 22:23
(franticly writting down all the ideas...)

...embedded in the top of the saucer. Right. I dont know how I would work all this in, but...

BorgMan
30th Oct 2006, 22:47
C5... The "embedded at the top of saucer' thing isn't new. Voyager's bridge was a self contained unit which was capable of seperation too... Or so I have read somewhere...

seanr
30th Oct 2006, 23:01
Hey Seanr... Always ment to ask you. What kinda texture, if any, do you usualy add to the main color on your bridge sets? (Static, Diffuse Clouds, ect)I typically use a very slight cloud pattern if any and a very slight noise bump. Subtlty is the key. The cloud pattern isn't necessary so much but will help vary the surface a bit. The noise will give it just a hint of roughness - walls are never perfectly smooth in some in Trek have even been intentionally a bit spackled like the walls on the ST6 and 7 (Ent-B) bridge sets.

If I were doing this, I'd face the aft turbolift the other way, so it exited into that corridor, and not the bridge. It's always kind of bugged me that anyone arriving for a meeting with the Captain in his ready room, or a meeting of any kind in that observation lounge / briefing room, has to traipse through the bridge.

In the modern Navy, they try to keep extraneous visitors out of the bridge.

Looking great, but I've got a little bit of advice you might find helpful:

I fear this set is going to run into the same problem most of these sets do, which is that it has been built from the group up based on a floor plan rather than from the outside in based on a hull shape, so that in the end, when the author gets to the point of having to add a ceiling to it, they can't (or don't) figure out how to integrate it with the walls.

If you look at all of the canon trek sets, you'll notice that the walls in all of them either curve or somehow angle in at the top, sometimes with an extra piece and sometimes directly, to the point where it's hard to identify a single specific point where the wall ends and the ceiling begins. They flow like one continuous structure. Most fan designs look great up to that point but then the ceiling just appears to be plopped on top.

I would strongly advise you to draw some sketches of the top of the walls and try to figure out some way to integrate the ceiling structure in with the walls so that it appears to be part of a singe larger superstructure. Take some time to think about it from an engineering standpoint - think about how you would build something like this so that it could withstand an impact (a small one, at least), and how it would need to be shaped relative to the outside of the ship.

Basically, what you have to do is think of the set in three dimensions, as a space, rather than in two dimensions as a floor plan. You'll notice if you look through my wips that all of my sets start out not with the floor but with a shell, building the walls and ceiling first and then working my way in. Occasionally the floor will get built at the same time as the ceiling or slightly before, but only as a rough approximation just to have something there usually. Here are a couple renders as examples:

http://www.webolutionary.com/truespace/gallery/seanr/temp/bridge_ambassador2-1.jpg
http://www.webolutionary.com/truespace/gallery/seanr/temp/bridge_daedalus2-1.jpg
http://www.webolutionary.com/truespace/gallery/seanr/temp/bridge_millennium-1.jpg
http://www.webolutionary.com/truespace/gallery/seanr/temp/bridge_enthybrid-1.jpg

That advice applies for anyone interested in set design of any kind, not just this set or even just bridge sets. It's a pretty common mistake I see, so I figured I'd try to head it off at the pass before this project got too far along in case you hadn't already thought of it.

seanr
23rd Mar 2007, 20:46
BTW, I wish I had more of those, but it's pretty rare that I even render a set that early in its construction and even rarer still that I actually upload them for distribution. I tend to get all the way through the shell and start building stations before I do my first test renders.

Countdown5
23rd Mar 2007, 21:26
Thanks seanr... thats been something thats always been odd for me, as I'm sure it is with most. What looks well spaced and placed in a 2D plan doesn't always look right in 3D.

Countdown5

First the lighting.
Click here (http://web.mac.com/morganzacd5p/iWeb/Countdown%20Five%20Productions/Downloads_files/Legacy%20VR%20001.mov.bz2)
Then review the VR. First do you agree with the route I taking with the light placements and 2, those floor panels around the helm. Do you want them to just give off a soft glow, or a bit more of a short but sharp projection.

And let me know about your chair style plans for the bridge.

Galen
6th Apr 2007, 12:46
omg omg omg omg!! that is so damn coool... Ok, light positions are fine. The floor lights should just give off a soft glow like on voyager. We could try either a Galaxy or Sovereign Seating style. Which ever is classier. LOL

well... I can do build it like that if you want. But I think it helps break up that space to have more then one. Now if six is too many I can elongate them easily and break it down to 4. Or could to a 3 & 1. 3 history ships on one side, and a beauty shot of legacy on the other. All in that white on clear style like it is in the screen shot you had.

you should try to stretch that LCARs out so the side bars are in those two bumps of the screen and have the "main" data in the large rectangular part. Other then that, it's good

Its temp... thats actually the msd from the main bridge. Just wanted something other than black reflection.

15th Apr 2007, 07:19
I remember seeing transparent LCARS (It was in Endgame, and futuristic, so shut me up if you think I'm bat****) and I'd wonder if that would look good against the transparent legacy screens?

Also, can I just day that you rock and I'll give you my firstborn if I can have your modeling skills?

CD5,
The room looks good...Keep up the good work.
Just wondering, is the MSD a new one of the Legacy Class or did you just reverse and reduce the image?
The only reason I ask is that it looks different from the original MSD.

Nice progress. Any plans on lighting those panels? Hope it´s not too annoying but here´s something you might like: The core of those rods mounting the plates to the wall could be a glowing light source that´s covered by an outer metal shell everywhere except for the area where it touches the plate. Now if you make the white graphics roughed glass surface instead of simple paint they´ll glow because of the light reflected several times inside the glass (similar to the conditions inside fiber optics cables).
Just thinking out loud. After all it´s your design.

Countdown5
15th Apr 2007, 22:56
I was originally thinking some kinda floor light, but I really like your idea. Ill put together a demo and if G&K okay it...

seanr
16th Apr 2007, 20:32
I like the three pieces of glass on each side much better than one piece on each side. Also, I agree about the MSD. The two vertical bands should be shortened a bit and the whole MSD stretched horizontally so that the bands fit into the narrower ends of the screen.

Like this...

Galen... The image is a great length for fit. If we could get two or three history ships for the left side and one b&w beauty shot of the Legacy for the right, i think this could work.

And slightly thicker lines would help to bring these out. If possible...

And don't mind the odd area in the middle. I wasn't able to finish the render before having to lock up work.

Excellent looking, well deserving of the header.

Been playing with the sample count and upping the min. res a little since those might be long surfaces that the computer could be viewing as minimal.

It helped a little but tacked another 15 minutes to my already 40 minute render time.

Martocticvs

This is looking very good so far.

The blotchyness you are getting is likely caused by either the accuracy or the max resolution being set too low. 70% accuracy should give pretty decent results so I would try upping the max resolution to 150 or 200 and see how it is then.

BTW, one suggestion for you:

Looks like you've got a metal area with inset lights surrounding the floor of the helm area, but that floor is on the same level as the surrounding area. You've currently got some serious line of sight problems as a result, such that the bottom quarter of the viewscreen is cut off for half the people on the bridge. I would highly recommend sinking the helm area at least one, but preferably two steps to alleviate that problem. The bridge is already laid out perfectly to enable that, so I don't think it'd change the overall design much at all.

For that big centre gap in the floor, why not set up one of those cool doohickey monitor/navigation stations like the original enterprise had between it's helm and navigation stations? It doesn't have to be as big or clunky, but a sort of screen/display that shows a navigation chart for the captain perhaps?
