Thanks everyone!
Steve O: Nope no real world projects yet. At least none that have gone public. :(
Fafnir_6: Yes actually quite a few are based on insects. Lots of them start out as a squiggly line as well.
Ozylot: Funny you should say that. I blame Homeworld for my Carpal-Tunnel. :) GREAT designs in that game and part 2.
Backstept: Thanks! I can crank out the ballpoint sketches at great speed. The Photoshop painting takes a bit longer though.

Could you give me some tips on how I can improve my drawings (http://www.scifi-meshes.com/forums/2d-wips/1572-borgmans-concept-alcove-not-faint-heart.html)? And what kind of materials do you use to create your drawings?

Amazing man. I remember the early stuff you posted before the "big crash." Some damn fine marker rendering dude and those designs are off the wall. If Lucas had used some of this stuff, I would have enjoyed the prequil trilogy much more. I`m pretty sure you wont have much of a problem finding work with skills like that...
PS. Congrads on the header...:flippy:

I love it.
It has such a touch of multiple places (for me: SHIELD(Marvel comics spy agency, Star Wars, Juan Gimenez artworks, original, games, etc) that looks sophisticated but familiar. I loved them. Keep up the great work!
Those fighters are nice, like the ones of Mechwarrior/Battletech. :)

Great work, mate! :)
I have a very small work contract I can offer you if you're interested.
I'm looking for a dozen concept designs along these lines per month for several months at a rate of around $300US a month.
Rights-wise, they'd have to be work-for-hire, meaning I'd own the IP of the designs, but you'd get conceptual artist's credits and you'd be free to publish your own designs (web, print, etc.) for portfolio purposes.
Lemme know if you're interested. Thanks.

Absolutely amazing. I can definitely see the Homeworld influence, but they look completely unique as well. If I wasn't working on a model right now I would definitely model one our your designs.

Justin- He's got his homepage listed in his profile here, and if its getting as much interest as this thread, it could well be traffic overload- depends on his host. :)

Just 404/not found pages on all subpages of his site, but main pages come up just fine every time.. so not likely a traffic issue?

Hey thanks everyone for stopping in and having a look, and for the kind compliments. I haven't been around for a while as I recently moved back to the New York area, and I see in my absence this thread has received a lot of attention. Thanks to all for the comments and to Scifi-Meshes for the header!
I'll try to answer a few questions before I have to run;
Anyone can model any ships or robots so long as they don't say "property of Green Ronin", and as long as you send me a few renders or screenshots.
seanr: Thanks! No, I've never tried Trek stuff and I've never really thought about it. When I get some time I'll play around a bit. Going in different directions always helps you grow so thanks for the suggestion! I also agree that the Corsair-type wing angle would be interesting, or maybe a variable wing pitch?
Andrew March: By god that's the first time my work has been referred to as the "dog's bullocks"! thanks for the compliments!
BorgMan: Actually I'm self-schooled mostly, but I did take a few classes here and there. THe key is to keep drawing as much as you can everyday. AS for materials, the majority of these are just black ball-point ink drawings on newsprint, scanned and then colored in Photoshop. THe brush settings I use make it look like gouache-ish, and I'm always amazed at how many people think its natural media. I'll take a look at your stuff when I have a little more time.
Samurai: Thanks for the header man! It's nice to be noticed :)
Darth Malice: Thanks man. George has'nt returned my calls since the whole restraining order thing though ;)
Sanjurjo: Good eye on spotting the Juan Gimenez influence, he's a biggie!
Justin: I'll kick you an email as soon as I'm done here. Thanks for the interest. My page is a mess right now as I keep redesigning it. All images are done by me, I'm just taking forever to finish my site :P
JeffrySG: Not much to tell about my background really, been drawing since four, and have never really let up. I've only recently decided to turn from hobby to profession though. No art school, just my pen on the paper for years and years, and I've got the RSI to prove it!
nhall: Thanks! Just sent a PM over to ya.
Maybe the retro look is due to my older inspirations, or the fact that everything is not so stylized and curvy. I like things to look utilitarian, with some exposed guts here and there. WW2 and Vietnam era aircraft are a big source of ideas for me.
Thanks again everyone!
Could you possibly provide some detail on your photoshop techniques? I'm highly curious about your brush settings as well as blending modes and such. Are you using a pen tablet?

Wow:thumb: ! I haven't been to this site in a while, so I'm a bit late for the review party:p . Great looking concept designs and even more impressive that you're self taught - that's just amazing:) ! There's a few designs that I would definitely love to model, which I'll be sure to send you an e-mail on it, as well as some screen shots. However, for the time being I'm pretty busy getting my own business and website started, so it may be a little while before I get around to it.

Since everyone seems to love it and I'm a bit of a contrarian I'll make this long and bitter. Several of the ships, especially the stuff at the top of the opening post (images 1-7) look like background SW ships. The kind that are used to fill voids but aren't good enough to take center stage. Others are very abstract and I don't look very functional. I hate the 'robot head' image (second from the bottom) and I'm not too fond of the full droid either. There are only two aliens that actually look alien, the rest have the same basic facial arrangement of a human (2 eyes, a nose, and a mouth). When I see the single-eye-and-body I wonder how a creature like that came to be, how it gets its energy to function, etc. I do like the gray fuzzy thing with the vertical row of eyes. I also like the white wing ship with the red stripes in the 11th image and the blue plane in the 22nd image. If you were to develop any of these further I'd say go for those.

seanr: I use Linear Burn layers for the shadows, Linear Dodge layers for highlights, and Color layers to finish off. I use a brush that is a fuzzy square with a texture setting that gives the appearance of bleeding around the rough paper surface at 50% opacity. And I'm using a Wacom 4X6 tablet, life would suck without it. That's about it really.
Huejass: Thanks for the input and non-ass pat. All input is welcome.
I don't know what to add 'cause every thing I think have already been said.
so I'll just say that your artworks are just fantastic !!!

Fine work, Dude! Some of it reminds me of EvE (the Game) and the Aquablue comics.
As for the lack of "functionality" pointed out by Huejass: Even concept art has a few stages to go through, I think. And a test of overall shape and colour before thinking about functionality doesn't sound like a bad approach...
Some of the concepts may not really have a future, but there are some real pearls among them. And thats what defines "concept art" for me.

Hey Ozylot that looks really good, nice job :) The ship is actually one shade of orange, but you are free to interpret it any way you like (I guess that's why they call it a "concept"). Be sure to grunge it up with textures! I have no problem with people posting work based on my drawings in this thread, so fire away once you've made significant progress (please don't post a cube and say "step 1").

you got talent to make those things look good. But from what i saw all of them were space ship designes all of them did not look sturdy enough for even that. And most of them definatly dont have enough wingspan to fly in earth. Unless you plan to plug some antigrav drives(only exists in movies) those things are not gona lift off.:thumb:

Sorry I am late . . . . . :D
these are frackin' awesome scketches . . . you definatley have an imagination and style that is unstopable . . . The work is unique and in some way reminds me of "Feng" Still the concepts are fantastic.
I didn't read all the posts here so I may repete some things but, has anybody here started to model any of these pieces yet . . . . cause they scream out for it . . .

Yeah, this stuff is really amazing. I've always loved concept art. Nice to see more of it here at SFM.
Hey Pimp, maybe you guys should actively promote concept art here at SFM. I used to visit a huge concept art forum community some time ago but it folded when the board boss started getting steady work.
Those people must still be floating around the web somewheres huh?
