View Full Version : Challenge #9 - enigmaxs - Spheroid Probe

After much deliberation over which primitive shape would be my preferred option, I eventually settled on the Sphere. So with that in mind I came up with the Spheroid Probe. It floats! It rolls! It crawls!...wait...crawls you say? Well, maybe it will by the end and maybe I've just had too much coffee *twitches*, only time will tell...
Below is my 'sketch' and I will begin the modelling process shortly...

Ok, here are the first two images from the project:
View one shows the making of the sensor strip and the Anti-Grav emitter.

View 2 shows a little more detail added and the first scanning eye.

It's not looking too spectacular at the moment but I'll keep plugging away.

If time allows I will be adding greebles and other details, yes.

Here's another small update:
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/9183/stage03qn7.jpg
It shows the addition of the larger scanning eye. I would have done more but yesterday was a hellishly busy one, I am hoping to get more done today.

Latest update:

This addition shows the lower pod in it's open position. Now what could the reason for that be? Hmm...maybe answers will follow in my next post...

Yup I make it up as I go along (obviously I'm following the original sketch as a basis though, :p) and yup I'm really a geordie, born and bred, ;).
@CrimsonLine:
Thanks, that's exactly what I was going for.

I think that, barring any little tweaks to details, I'm pretty much done with the model. This is the latest update with more detailing to the top half of the dome completed:

Now to decide whether or not to texture it (which is hands down my weakest point in modelling...heh heh)...

You need to 'hint' at equipment behind the glass area.

Looking great. Just not sure about the sensor strip.
I agree, it's not turned out quite as I expected, any suggestions?

Tinukedaya
14th Dec 2008, 17:02
Make it irregular? break it on few places with not glassy greebling? or just greeble the whole strip and put few glassy sensors on there.

Pretty much what I was thinking. I dunno I'll play around with it and hopefully something will emerge...

14th Dec 2008, 20:10
Looking good! But if you are going to use shiny parts, perhaps it would be a good idea to have a nice HDR in to get some reflections going.
enigmaxs
16th Dec 2008, 21:15
@Ozylot:
I have no idea how to even begin thinking about that. Translation: Huh? :p
Onyhoo, I've taken onboard some of the constructive feedback from you fellas and even though I'm full of Flu (with runny nose and streaming eyes as I type this) I've decided to try to put that feedback into action. Below is the latest version of the Probe:
http://img114.imageshack.us/img114/2672/stage13yb7.jpg
I've decided to drop the idea of the sensor strip as it just wasn't working, and I've goen for a different lens cover so you can now partially see the tech behind it (if you look real close you may even be able to see the 3 lenses! heh heh).
:D

Which version is better in your eyes guys? The sensor strip and black eye or the non sensor strip and the red eye?
:D
Tinukedaya
17th Dec 2008, 12:11
I like the last one better. Tho I would put that glassy material on one or two of 'em panels in the strip to suggest some sensors there as well.

17th Dec 2008, 20:50
Personally i think the one with the black eye looks better...... more evil in a way :P
BEMEUP
17th Dec 2008, 23:19
Yep, I'm liken Ol' Red Eye. You could put a glowing yellow light in the center of the red lens'. Give it that "I'm watching you and I'm going to crawl up your leg..."
enigmaxs
18th Dec 2008, 00:05
I've decided to keep the Red eye over the black and I've done as Tinukedaya suggested and added some more scanning panels:
http://img150.imageshack.us/img150/9238/stage14im0.jpg
I might leave the yellow glow 'till I get the model locked down to a final look. I have a feeling it would take a while for me to work out how to do it...:p

Supurb! I dig the first textured version, looked more sinister. The latest iteration looks great too. Can just hear that things legs ticking around somewhere in the shadows.

18th Dec 2008, 15:31
Thanks for the comment RewiredMonkey. I'll wiat for a couple more opinions before I decide which way to go, which hopefully won't be too long as I think the deadline is very soon. But I have to admit I'm liking the latest version the most personally...

Ozylot
19th Dec 2008, 15:05
Sorry, maybe it's just the black on black background, but I preferred the red. :D Ultimately though, it's not up to us, it's up to you ;) Keep it up!

19th Dec 2008, 20:47
Gotta say I'm liking the black myself but the dome needs the texture of the red dome. The machined look.
Great job so far! :thumb:

See the black one is better :p
enigmaxs
20th Dec 2008, 00:41
I'm rendering the last batch of images overnight. There seems to be a more popular vote for the black than the red but I really don't like how that black looks, so I've chosen a new version which kinda incorporates both the black and the red textures...you'll see what I mean tomorrow. This will, however, be the final version as I won't have time for any more changes so I hope it works out...heh heh.
