Well lets give this a shot. Contrary to the others, I'm not starting with sketch due to lack of scanning possibilities at my place. I think I'll make a photo of it at some stage to show you.

I do have two ideas. One is cube the other one sphere. I kinda prefer the Cube so I started some modeling on it. I decided to go with mental ray mats and render for the challenge, which I never used before.

I like the results coming out of it so far, I really do.

I like the results also.

Kinda reminds me of a transformer :D looks like it could shrink a bit to protect its self from damage.

ooo nice! I'd bevel some of those edges though!

Cheers lads, glad you like it.

@fluxfire - indeed, it can close itself :D

@Dallidas - There already is very slight bevel. I might make it more, but more likely not, because I want it to look "precise", if that make any sense :D

Playing around with the lights, trying to figure out how all the photometric lights work...Might need to check on some tutorials.

Although I kinda like the "feel" of it, it's all based on try&error.

Also adding some minor detail, like different kinds of connectors, plugs, side cameras, etc. I hope to add quite a few small greebles all along it. good that we have that long for this challenge :D

The lighting came out nice! Looking very good so far...

Thanks BEMEUP

A little update. some more work on the mats (basically just switching between premade default stuff), lightning and few more greebles added. The front and side "dish" are only placeholders right now, not sure if I like it though. If I keep it, it would be "foldable", as everything might be retracted inside the cube so that the cover can close...

Dude that looks awesome, well done, the lighting is very good and the simple yet feature rich design is compelling.

Cheers lad! Glad you like it.

Small update, some more tweeks here and there nothing serious. I'm spending 90% of time doing renders with different settings to one or two things to see how it behaves. :D

oh and btw: Canon is registered trademark... :thumb:

small question: I'm adding film grain to my other renders, because I like the look of it, but mental ray is incompatible with this effect, any way to add it through max, or just do it post outside?

one more render before bed time...

Looking very realistic, nice work so far!

Thanks lads.

BEMEUP: Those are foldable dishes. They are not done yet, it's just the "frame". it's directional listening microphones.

Ok, so i'm almost done with the modeling side of this.

Still few minor stuff to do, but nothing big. Right now I tried to see the final scene setup.

Whatcha t'ink 'boot it?

kinda looks like the crotchitizer (http://ratchet.wikia.com/wiki/Crotchitizer) from Ratchet and Clank! Which is good and bad i suppose...lol

The rendering is looking great though!

Oy! Thankee lads!

Here's little somethin' I did t'day. Still adding some lil' details on it to fill it some more. I think I'll call it done quite soon.

I do have one more sketch, which I choose between at the beginning so I might as well try that one :D That one is sphere.
Have to get those sketched here anyway... *wonders how to do that*

Any comments, critiques and/or suggestions welcome as always...

I always wish I could offer insightful observations about people's work, instead of just saying: "Wow that's really neat".

Uhm.... well... Wow, that's really neat.

Sorry, that's the best I can do right now.;)

Thanks rojren,

finally I got myself to photoshot the sketches so here it is. The first one I obviously follow quite directly here, and as I think I'll call the Cube done, I might try the sphere one as well, just for the fun of it. It's not hovering one as the cube, it's driving. The middle strip is wheel basically and it has an gyroscope inside to keep it level.

nice idea! the sphere reminds me of the tank thing that general grevious drives in Star wars episode 3. I can imagine if you developed it more it couold be better than the cube drone? Nice work on the model you have already made, I like the renders. BTW what program do you use to model?

I might jump on the sphere yet, as I'm finished with the cube, so just for the sake of it, if time allows, who know.

I'm using 3DS Max

anyway here is how I imagine the final pic. There would be different shot in the top one though, and still have an Idea i have to implement... not sure how yet though.

anyway, any CCS welcome as always

Nice composite shot, definitely works with the design.
