At the start of Challenge #9, I said that I'd give it two weeks before releasing anything regarding Challenge #10 and how they were related. While this challenge will not officially start until January, the nature of the two challenges means that it is probably be useful for people to start to prepare.
WE DO NOT WANT PEOPLE TO START ON CHALLENGE #10 YET - just prepare!
“Primitives In Motion”
This challenge is all about implementation of Challenge #9 in an actual environment, and to make things more interesting this can either be tackled as either an individual or a group challenge of up to 3 people per group. If you have not read the Challenge #9 rules, DO SO NOW.
What we want to see
We want you to take the results of the previous challenge (each instance, in the case of a group entry) and place those results into an environment designed to best show it (them) off. The entry can either be a higher-reseolution image (see below) or and/or between 5 and 30 seconds of animation (the duration does not affect judging - we understand members animating restrictions).
You can build as much / many additional meshes as you wish but:
The 'Primitive' entry(s) from Challenge #9 must remain paramout;
All additional meshes must be textured to the same level as the original entry.
We will be evaluating the entries on a range of things - originality, concept (2D and 3D), progress towards your goal, modeling (3D), texturing (3D) and final rendering (2D and 3D).
What we don't want to see
These rules are summed up on the Challenge #9 rules.
Sensei's Tips
The Sensei Team is here for a reason - namely to help YOU become as good as we can get you to be in the digital graphics world. We can't help you however, unless you help us. We can't pick comments out of the air if we don't know where you are having problems.
Work methodically. Give us your sketches that didn't work out; give us your concept drawings that you think will work and show us how you are progressing towards your goal. The more that you show us, the more we and the rest of the community can comment on.
To this end, a requirement of this challenge is that at the very least we want to see one concept sketch or some sort of storyboard that you've made that has set you on your final path. Remember however, that we are looking for a sketches - no matter how rough - and not a work of art in itself.
Also, if you've used a special technique or a feature of your software that you have never touched before, tell us in your thread - we and the rest of the membership want to know how you have progressed along your design route and in your personal skills.
Challenge Duration
You have FOUR weeks from January 4th 2009 to come up with your final entry. The challenge will run Saturday to Saturday, so we'll expect to have closed the challenge for the start of Sunday 1st February, 2009.
The Rules:
You can enter either a rendering/animation of a 3D model, or a 2D concept piece. The same rules on context apply equally.
If you did not participate in Challenge #9, or participated but did not submit your design, you may still compete at the discretion of the Senseis - we simply need to confirm that your meshes uphold the spirit of Challenge #9.
Your final submission must be no more than 1680 pixels along the longest edge, but can be any aspect. You may also enter between 5 and 30 seconds of animation to a maximum resolution of 800x600.
You will post a WIP in the Challenge forum, you must show progress on your additional model(s) and layout before you submit your final entry, this, among other things, will allow us to make sure everyone is within the rules.
As usual, name your thread in the challange wip forum in the format:
Challenge #10 – Member or GroupName – Title (if appropriate)
If a group, use the first post in your thread to identify your team. DO NOT POST A THREAD BEFORE THE CHALLENGE OPENS - but you may use Challenge #9 threads to organise your group.
Prizes:
1st place - SFM Sensei Gold medal displayed under the winners avatar, your artwork shown on the SFM Header.
2st place - SFM Sensei Silver medal displayed under the winners avatar.
3st place - SFM Sensei Bronze medal displayed under the winners avatar.
Most Honourable Member - Green Sensei Medal displayed under the winners avatar, awarded to the most helpful and contructive member in the challenge.
In the sprit of competition and dissemination of skills throughout the community, all members of SFM (inc. Moderators, Senseis and Admins) may create WIPs. As usual however, Senseis and Admin are NOT permitted to enter their final design at the end of the challenge and can therefore not win any prize.
If you have any questions then please ask them in this thread, otherwise:
Good luck to everyone!
