The City of the future, Transportation.

Welcome to the start of the New Sensei Challenge! This challenge deals with the problems of moving people in future environments, a challenge often tackled in popular Sci-fi.

Now it's your chance to show the members of the site your vision of future city travel.

We have given you two broad scenarios to play with, the first is a something along the lines of todays cities but with higher populations and more advanced technology. The second is a world of decay with crumbling, sparsely populated cities - technology and resources are thin on the ground.

Scenario 1: Cities are becoming ever more populated, denseley packed and vertical. Tall buildings abound and transporting people through a sprawling metropolis is more difficult than ever. A new form of transport is required; something that could carry people to every corner of the city with speed and comfort - cars are locked into nightmare ground traffic jams and segways are silly, old fashioned busses just smell to bad to be used. It might be built or even grown. it might drive conventionally on wheels or it might walk, climb or fly, or anything else you can think of.

Scenario 2: A time when technology is stagnating, warfare and limited resources make transportation choices limited, traffic is not a problem in this city. Human power, mutated bugs, alternative energy sources might all be harnessed along with those few scraps of conventional or advanced technology that have survived. It could be land travel, it could fly, Perhaps the city will even be flooded, making water transport a possibility.

Your challenge is to create a suitable form of transport for either scenario, something unlike the vehicles we might use today: It could be a flying car, a train that will drive up the side of a building, a hoverboard, a jetpack, a wooden cart towed by a giant killer cockroach, a shuttlecraft or something far more interesting. It could even be some sort of genetically engineered or alien creature that one can ride upon. The designs themselves do not have to be "Human" looking designs and we will accept "Alien" looking vehicles, but whatever scenario you go for, the transport must be capable of carrying, and being controlled by, at least one Human.

Things to remember:

- It should be original, so if you do want to make a Hover-Car then make sure its your own design.

- Innovation is good! you can go with the ideas provided, but come up with something truely original, a concept that hasn't been used before and you will have a much better chance of impressing the Judges.

You have TWO weeks from today, 09/27/16, to come up with your final entry.

The Rules:

You can enter either a rendering of a 3D model on a plain coloured background, or a 2D concept piece, as with the 3d model the background should be plain, you are not required to build or paint the city itself.

Your final submission must be no more than 800x600 but it may be oriented in either Landscape or portrait.

No known genres: As well as overall looks, originality and innovation are key to winning the contest as previously mentioned. We realise that sometimes something may resemble something else purely becuase they fulfill similar roles. BUT, if we recognise something as being exactly copied from Startrek or Starwars, Blade Runner, Mad Max or whatever, your submission will be rejected, of course that won't happen because -

You will post a WIP in the Challenge forum, you must show progress on your model before you submit your final entry, this, among other things, will allow us to make sure everyone is within the rules.

Prizes:

1st place: SFM Sensei Gold medal displayed under the winners avatar + your artwork shown on the SFM Header.
2st place: SFM Sensei Silver medal displayed under the winners avatar.
3st place: SFM Sensei Bronze medal displayed under the winners avatar.

Most Honourable Member: Green Sensei Medal displayed under the winners avatar, awarded to the most helpful and contructive member in the challenge.

If you have any questions then please ask them in this thread, otherwise:

Good luck to everyone!

-SFM Sensei.

How are our threads to be titled?

Something that describes what it is will be fine, e.g. "Hovercar"

Damn, i cant use my idea of giant Segways carrying hundreds of people! :shiner:

This compo sounds great! :D

um...isn't this the second challenge? Thought Challenge one was split into two spereate sections??? .... .... *flees!*:shiner:

ALSO: what do you mean by this:

...or a 2D concept piece...

Does it mean that there can be 2D entries??? Or should i get my eyes and brain checked??

Ramiel

@ Choo1701: You can choose if you want to post a 3D work OR a 2D work (in your WIP, if you will do the 3D model, you can post a concept sketch too, but that is up to you, just remember that the final submission should be -unless Collhand have something different in mind:shiner: - a 3D render OR a 2D piece).

This sounds great, shame I can't model for Jack or I would definately be in on this.

Sphynx
25th Sep 2006, 19:39
Citizen (gee, that address sounds so socialist, or Equilibrium style futureworld :D): that should be fine, as long as the novel is not an established genre that has been shown elsewhere already (e.g. A SW novel that may have an implication of design styles as a result of the SW films).

What is important in this issue is that you can show that you designed is from the basic descriptions, and did not just extend the work of others. If such a craft has a name however, I'd advise not using it - remember we are looking for originality here. You need to establish for yourself how using the work of others in this way will deteriment your chances in voting.

It's a Red Dwarf novel, so it is an established genre, but all I'm taking from it is the method of locomotion, nothing of the look (in fact how it looks isn't mentioned, and I don't plan on really following the look of anything in the series).

Any instructions with polycount or other technical regulations? Texturing, lightning and so on?

Anyway, nice challenge. More a sort of product design.

I think design is going to carry more weight than poly cout etc. Too bad classes started today or I might take this on :p

Just to make sure.

Do we have to model something for both scenario's or can we chose one?

ORIGINALITY is the important thing.
Don't worry about the polycount;)
The final submission should be a 800 x 600 image, and you can choose one of the scenarios, the one you like it most.

25th Sep 2006, 21:46
Interesting idea. But I wouldn´t manage to stay on topic because it´s just too tempting to model an enviroment as well (and we all know that there´s the danger of the enviroment becoming the main part instead of the vehicle).

I gotta size the small size is something of a downer. I can understand a limit size to keep things uniform, but why one so small?

Can we submit something form both scenario’s?

Sadly not that i have the time to take this one... As i would if i did have the time :( But 800x600? Thats a tad low res why not 1024x768? Or even HD :D

Uh, surely the end date shouldn't be 09/27/16 otherwise the challenge had bettter be to build the mode of transportation so that Aceman can pickup all the members and get them to the first annual SFM meeting?!

Anyway other than that sounds like fun, shame I'm going on holiday otherwise I'd have given this one a try.

Yep - two weeks only. Remember that this is a challenge, not a full-blow competition. We're expecting members to stretch themselves, but not perform miracles.

For 3d renderings, are we allowed a floor and walls around our mesh fto enhance our GI?

Sphynx
26th Sep 2006, 20:18
I don't think that we've really discussed that, but as the design the vehicle is the key, I think something simple - rather like the Crate conditions - are in order. Probably a floor and wall is the maximum that we want - though of course, for things like the suspended trams, the tramway / pylons would be allowable but only because it is instrumental in the method of motion power of the vehicle itself.

I'll confirm this with the other Senseis - if there is anything different to this agreed, we'll post it here.

Coolhand
27th Sep 2006, 15:12
Farcry, you are required to only build the vehicle/transport. Sphynx is spot with his comments, floor, bit of track if its needed, thats all.

as for the fx, you can add them if you want. we will not judge your entry based on the fx though, so you may be wasting your time, you're better off just working on your design.

Glazy, LOL!

So does this have to include texturing as well? I suck at texturing but have an idea of sorts for a vehicle and I, so far, just model in a clay like color.

TheGreatRaja
29th Sep 2006, 22:41
let's see two week... on my scedule that gives me maybe 2 days (four tops!)
not sure if my LW Deprived brain can work somethine up in that time....
will have to think quick...
:D

edit: Can we use pieces of models we have already made? (not reuse other peoples, but our own models)

treleth
1st Oct 2006, 05:36
Just to repeat a question, will the model have to be textured?

Sphynx
1st Oct 2006, 08:57
Well, this is not a non-textured competition - so it would be more advantageous (competing wise) for you if it was.

cirus5555
4th Oct 2006, 17:57
does this comp finish on the 11/10/06 or10/10/06
and what time?;)

Sphynx
4th Oct 2006, 18:09
Well, Coolhand gave you a full two-weeks from 'today, the 27th September' (which is weird really, considering that the post was made on the 25th according to the forum date...) so I'd guess you've got until the end of day of the 11th.

I'll confirm what the cut-off time is (e.g. UK, US, etc) but I'm guessing we'll be going with the board-time as usual for the SFM competitions.

Tovette
4th Oct 2006, 18:37
so the last day is the 11th?

Sphynx
4th Oct 2006, 18:40
Based on two weeks from the 27th of September yes - but remember I don't know what time yet.

Not really sure that we'll be overly strict however - remember that this is a challenge for fun, not prizes.

Coolhand
4th Oct 2006, 20:42
The cutoff point for entries will be 6pm GMT on the 11th.

it should have been the 9th but you're all getting a couple more days because i typed 27 instead of 25 in the start date...:D

seriously though, anything posted in the final submissions thread after 6pm GMT on the 11th will not be considered (probably) so to ensure your entry is judged, submit it by then.

I'll make the final submissions thread available in a day or two.

Thanks.

Sensei challenges are judged by the senseis.

Like many members, senseis can't always log on each day, so we aim to have final results within 1 week of each challenge closing to give all senseis time to log on and see them all without rushing their decisions.
