James Cameron's Avatar has broken just about every record out there. We'd like to know what you think?

It a great movie, I can't for it to come out on Blueray so I can buy it. :)

Visually vast and stunning the narrative is bland but strengthened by solid performances from a skilled ensemble cast.

I'll buy it on blu-ray for sure whether or not I'll ever play that blu-ray through from end-to-end on for my personal viewing pleasure is questionable but it'll get broken out a couple of times for movie nights no doubt.

Personally I think the real star is Pandora, there are more interesting planetary concepts in science fiction but none that are realised with as much vigour and attention to detail and are therfore as compelling.

Ironically, when I saw Avatar, I did not forget that the animated characters were not real; rather, after a time, the live characters started to look animated.

It was weird.

@chanur: I'm thinking of buying an Imax3D theater just for this movie. (Good thing I don't have that much money to waste!)

Personally, I think it was just a movie......a very, very good movie.........but in the end just that...a movie. Not going to change my life or affect me in any way, shape or function.

i saw the movie twice. first time in 2D and second in 3D, and let me tell you, it's an epic and awe inspiring movie in both formats. definitely worth buying.

I know what you mean. It was an epic production, but not an epic story. But the script wasn't junk, either. Decent plot, character development, acting, drama, etc., but the emphasis was on the sfx, where it belonged.

Awesome ! I have only seen it in 2D but it was graphically really good.
The story is akin of "Pocahontas": the white man comes , falls in love with the local girl and goes on to protect the tribe of the girl ... nothing more, nothing less (but this is just my idea)
Despite this, I will certainly look after the DVD ...

I seem to be the only person in the world that thought this film looked like a poor PS3 game.
I just couldn't see what the fuss was all about.

Anyone remember Fern Gully? Soon's I saw the big forest munching machines I shut down. Visually stunning and good character development, but it was a rehash of Fern Gully and Disney's Pocahontas.

I will go on, with or without this movie. I see no need to purchase it. It's a one shot go.

I'm sorry I thought it was crap. Pretty crap, but crap none the less.
Yes the 3D is very nice and shows the tech off which is great. And we'd all love to have a render engine that can produce that sort of stuff. However that seems to be all this movie has going for it.
Several people here have mentioned good character development, but I didn't see any of that. In fact I saw a lot of very one dimensional characters supporting a only slightly more 2d principal hero.
Great story. I'm sorry again this is the worst kinda of popular band wagon jumping tripe. The term "and in this act we tug this emotional string" comes to mind.
The plot itself has some of the biggest holes I've every seen.

Since when do you need a shuttle (Able to make orbital flights) rigged as a bomber to drop a pallet of C4 on a location, but fly it at low altitudes?
And when it's shot down just ahead of its target it falls vertically rather than goes into a dive?
And when it hit the ground the resulting explosion from all that C4 combined with the fuel and engines etc of the shuttle, mean it doesn't even make a noticeable bang?

And that doesn't even take into account the missile systems already used in the movie by the rest of the attack air craft, which the mechs didn't think to use on their primary target.

Hmmm sounds like hollywood to me.

Having said all that. I know there are fans of the movie out there, and you are perfectly entitled to like, even love this movie. And to those people I say, great I'm glad you had fun and enjoy it.
Who am I to tell you otherwise. I merely wanted to put forward my view of the movie.

Story wise, it was dances with wolves with giant smurfs. It also featured several heavy handed "social agendas" that didn't need to be there. But the visual effects were breathtaking, and thats why i went to see it.

Ships: 10
Vehicles: 10
Creatures: 9.8 (had to take off point two points for the giant smurfs)
FX: 10
Plot: 7
Writers underline motivation for coming up with the story: -18.8

Total score: 5

So over all, the movie was good enough to go see, but not see again, unless they delete all the dialog audio.
