hello! its been awhile since i have posted any work, so i figured i would post my newst design.

Its called the infodio class destroyer. Infodio is latin for dig into, which is basicly what it does. It uses 2 massive spinning arrays of lasers/ion beams/phasers to literally cut a huge circular chunk out of a capital ships hull.

Now onto the design/layout. the first 1/3 is crew quarters bridge and CC. The 2nd 1/3 is all power production(green glowy bits) and the last 1/3 is engines storage. The 2 wheel things are the lasers.

so here it is so far.

C&C please!

Ooo this is a pretty design! I like the packed in details in the middle of the ship with the that glowy cylender. Hotness.

I wonder if Perfodio would be a more apt name - drill through or perforate.

I wonder if Perfodio would be a more apt name - drill through or perforate.

well i never saw that one, although i do like infidio..lol we shall vote! since it doesnt really matter.

while we are waiting, you can look at a new picture, of nothing new except 4 pipes and a greeble of some sort! whoever finds them first get a cookie! lol

oh and im having, well lack of ideas, on how to make the back look coller, so any suggestions would be nice.:thumb:

Dude! your WIPs are getting better and better, I like that little detailed area. Wish it was a little bigger. Good job... looks like you forgot to smooth a spot. :D

Dallidas
3rd Oct 2006, 02:55
thanks ozy! what do you wish was bigger? the picture or the area? oh and i just didnt turn on my smoothing yet.:thumb:

ok well i changed the back. i think the new end makes it look much faster and sleeker. i wont be able to use those fancy engines(the indented areas will be the engines), but o well.

EDIT: just for ozy i waited 10 minutes...

Beauty... nice greebles.

But as you know I am a sucker for detail. (see mobile base thread in sig ;))

Really nice... I'd so like to see more detail all over.

Nice render! and thanx ;) :D

thanks for the comments guys! they really keep me going especially on original models that are hard to find inspiration for some things. so thanks!:thumb:

as for updates i couldnt get much done tonight. i had a soccer game(we won woot!), and i have a but load of homework. So unless i finish before 10:45 there wont be anything else tonight. sorry

but here is what i did do.

Ozylot
4th Oct 2006, 13:02
As to ideas for what goes on the hull, look close at some of the larger original ships you see here on SFM. Pannels, pipes that run along the hull. round things square things.

Your doin great so far. :thumb:

well i wasnt really talking about inspiration for greebles, just design elements in general, but thanks for the tips!:thumb:

as for an update, its not much of anything, but its something. added 3 fans up top for emergency cooling(aka during constant firing:devil: ) and just added some more paneling. Its boring i know, but i will add another layer of paneling.

I am also working out a laser housing.

so stay tuned. (no school tomorrow:D )

C&C welcome as always

Aye, here I am faithful one. Well... Maybe not...

It looks good. Though for a ship that tunnels... In space... Why there are fans on it I do not know... Prey tell?

Ozzies right, you are getting better. Lots better. In fact, I have an idea. I'll PM you the details.

i do like it quite a bit!

Dallidas
8th Oct 2006, 02:51
Nice ship.

I like the spinning weapons array idea. I hope they're retractable.

i never thought about that. but it would depend on what design i go with for the lasers. my current one wouldnt fit in the gap.

thanks for the comments guys. more updates tonight

oh and oz there wont be too many other guns on it.:thumb:

Dallidas
8th Oct 2006, 21:33
ok im not sure if i like these panels or not, so you guys tell me what you think and be honest cus they wont be hard to change.:thumb:

on a side note: i dont want to greeble up the main hull too much, because i want it to be a clean ship as it is built by a very rich race so they dont have to spare any materials.

Ozylot
8th Oct 2006, 21:49
Looks cool so far. Pannels are a little ordinary right now. How hard is it for you to make 'L' Shaped pannels?

I do like the overlapping pannels though.

8th Oct 2006, 23:29
i like these better...

Ozylot

Ozylot
9th Oct 2006, 04:45
The new pannelling is comming along great!

One little suggestion that may look interesting.... try cutting little rectangles into the pannels... just scattered about wherever. Right in the middle of pannels off to the corner. maybe with a lesser edge. Possibly extruded slightly.

It would go a long way to adding that greebly goodness that we all love. :D

10th Oct 2006, 03:57
thanks guys, i went with ozy's idea(confused by the new avatar;) ) and i like it so here it is. too much homework tonight to get much done.

@ spry lol i guess i am pretty young compared to some people here:lol:
@kadaeux- thanks mate gald you like it
@Prime 8- dont worrry it will have guns...maybe i can use that turret i made awhile back....

Ozylot
10th Oct 2006, 11:35
Thats a nice touch. :D

now lets see that all over ;)

The little squares look cool. Another thought though.... try adding a few extra but use rectangles this time, some longer ones and some short ones.

Your coming along great bro, keep it up! :thumb:

Dallidas
12th Oct 2006, 03:54
ok a little bit of an update, even though it took me about 4 hours to do becasue i kept changing it and rendering it...we all know how that is.

anyway added some ribbing into the middle part of the middle section(say that ten times fast:D) and some windows to break that section up a little, and a minor greeble above and to the left of the reactor.

@ozy, thanks mate i think im catching up to you...:D
@lord ravensburg-thanks mate love the compliments.(do you havea short name i can call you??)

...@ozy, thanks mate i think im catching up to you...:D
...

Slowly but surely.... I honestly hope you do. :thumb:

Great work so far. I like the ribbing youve added. What would it look like if you added cross ribbing inside the ribs?

Perhaps a few longer pipes that run along the hull. Few more ideas for ya ;)

Continue! :thumb:

Dallidas
14th Oct 2006, 17:29
not too much done, ive been getting my social life in!:shiner:

but i added some horizontal struts but im not sure i like them. Im thinking about adding some paneling over the ribs bsg style so i still get the horizonatl break up.

C&C please!

Ozylot
14th Oct 2006, 18:38
Great progress...

Try making the horizontal ribbing smaller and not flush with the vertical ones. I should have stated that in my last post as that was the mental image I had.

Either way this is still some of the best stuff you've done to date.

Dallidas
14th Oct 2006, 19:30
redid them and deleted windows do to the fact that no one would want to be in that section. lol

Ozylot
14th Oct 2006, 19:58
good progress... what are you gonna put where the windows were?

If you plan to greeble it... I would suggest making a bunch of twisting pipes throught there.

Dallidas
14th Oct 2006, 20:12
im adding some random panels *maybe* a window or 2 and then greebles.

thanks for the comments mate, seems like your the only one who notices it...

20th Oct 2006, 05:49
Thats good (I gotta get out from under my rock...) I really like what you're doing there. I might take this chance to draw on your destroyer... :)

Also, the panels that cover the ribbing (absolutely ingenious, I never would have thought of that) might need some purposing (a word I just made up to mean: make 'em look like the mean something). Take into account the scale and add vents and stuff... Stuff. Like an airlock, or a refuse shute or something. I dunno, this why I'm no good at greebling...

-albert

Dallidas
20th Oct 2006, 13:18
feel free to draw all over it, i could care less.

as for the paneling having a purpose, im going with that they cover up some of the more important greebles that couldnt be put inside the ship.

I just wonder why on a destroyer someone places all that stuff on the outside :)

not done but heres the air lock so far

Good start. I agree that the door design could be a bit better. The toothy thing is actually a little inconvienient unless it opens fully.

Another suggestion:

Air locks have to have a tight seal (hence why the word lock appears ;))

So perhaps if there was some sort of locking system so that another ship or a station could hook onto the spacecraft. Even if there were a big metal loop that could be hooked into. Just something to think about.

Berticus
26th Oct 2006, 00:07
Uh... Don't get stuck in the airlock! lol

I like where this is going! (What else do you want me to say..?)

26th Oct 2006, 03:41
I agree with the others, the airlock could use a little work. I took a few of the others ideas and threw together a short (2s) video of what I think would look good. I would make a few tweaks to that nothing protrudes then fully open but this should give the general Idea. I Can give the .blend if you want.

Dallidas

thanks for all the comments guys. I havnt got much done because of another smaller project, but i spilt the ladder section in 2, which i think makes it look less awkward and i puts some panels on the floor. also there are some hooks on the ladder, but i doubt you can see them.:thumb:

well guys the AO descision was my impatientness wearing through. But getting in so close really adds the time, so ill do everything but the (really) closeups in AO. i guess i cant really complain about a 5 minute render though^^:D

Very nice render... great textures...

the ladders are more of a guide with hooks than anything else, atleast in space. When its landed, they have more use. This thing does have AG, but it doesnt extend outside the ship.:thumb:

all technobable aside, 2 new renders, one is a full ship render, and one is the progress on the front 1/3 of the ship. I added the bridge and some port holes, as well as some sensor things that im thinking about scrapping, and some paneling on top.

oh and the middle 1/3 is done, except mirroring some things.

Pipes would look good

I'm just wondering, after boring a big hole in a capital ship would it just move onto the next ship or stick it's nose in the hole and unload a platoon of shock troops to try and take over the ship.

actually i thought about that but decided thats another ship because the only part of this ship with any real space for people is the front third, which will be really cramped as is.

weapons are probably last. as of now i have no design for the laser housings themselves. So if anyone has any drawings that would be awesome. credit would be given of course.

they will be comin dont worry. i will be borrowing some/most of the greebles from the middle section to fill it in aswell.

im also debating on making the whole front section detach incase the reactor goes critical. Sound like a good idea to anyone? this will of course eat into the space available in the front section do to engines though.

i think the front will be detachable but like i said ealrier, this isnt a middle of the battle type ship, its in the back picking off the cap ships.:thumb:

ok well i redid the front section's panels and im thinking about redoing the middle sections panels to keep it more consistant. Im also thinking about putting in a ramp for entry on the bottom.

tell me what you think

Ozylot
1st Dec 2006, 03:34
Ramp is cool!

Ship is cool!

But if you have a ramp wont you need landing gears? (arms perhaps?)

And if it can land wont you need landing thrusters?

all of this is great stuff to consider when building a ship.

No, no, no. The ramp is just for kicking smart-alick politicians out without stopping first.

thats what the garbage chutes for:lol:

anyway, I drew these up in class today cos I wasn't doing anything and I decided I wouldn't use up half my internet credit the day we got more on SFM, like I did last month:(

the're just concepts, I'm not really sure if they match the ship style to well, but hey, it's better than nothing

Oh yea, I got a new monitor today, my dad finally upgraded from our old 17" CRT monitor to a massive 20" widescreen LCD :D i'm so happy. although I don't think it's configured correctly, as every thing is kind of squished, and the graphics card isn't quite good enough to display 32 bit colour at this resolution, so we need a new graphics card as well:(

Dallidas
2nd Dec 2006, 03:50
@ozy- thanks bro! as for landing gear...one of the laser emplacements on each wheel will be a landing strut.:thumb:

@efritsch-well for one thing, politicians arnt alowed on any warships. this is do to the fact that in the past one unmentioned politician forced a captain to get him tea instead of destroying a cap ship, which in turn destroyed half a fleet.:fishslap:

yes, i just now made that up lol

@pyrocitor-i really like the double laser design, i might change it but if you want, and if i use the design, would you like credit?

now, no updates do to a snowday(the first in 3 years!!) so we had to go sledding all day:D If we dont go again tomorrow, you should see something.:thumb:

Dallidas
11th Dec 2006, 23:43

Ozylot
11th Dec 2006, 23:47
as in a small compartment behind a closeable panel.

Don't mind me, I just think it would look more cool :D

Pyrocitor
11th Dec 2006, 23:50
have them fold back into the hull and some panels fold over them

the new design is cool, IMO i'd remove the two smaller thrusters

Dallidas

finished up the arse of the ship, not too many greebles back there, well none, due to the nature of the section, just some heavy duty paneling to keep the heat from the reverse thrusters from melting the ship:D.

also included some orthos.:thumb: i prefer the last:devil:

Ozylot
23rd Dec 2006, 22:43
Very cool!!! I like how this has come so far. You've come a long way!

slightly more complex panel pattern by the reverse engines.
And from your front view you may consider making those antennas fold down when the ship starts firing.

Awesome man :thumb:

I like what you've done with the lasers, same basic shape and setup, but simplified. I really like the spheres on the tops too.

Originally I pictured the lasers red, but yellow might actually look quite cool, or maybe orange.

Keep up the good work, I cant wait to see this finished

well i have a few different colors now.
