Hi, y'all! In case you weren't following this thread on the old SFM, here's a rundown.

This ship was designed in Photoshop by Doug Schramm, and had made its way around the internet, drawing praise and (some) scorn.

Here's Doug's original design:
http://www.fourmadmen.com/mirror/~crimsonline/HybridThreeView.jpg

I thought it was cool. So I asked Doug for his permission to model her in 3D! Been working on her now for many months. Here's where she's at now:

And we're only allowed 4 images per post! Yeeps!

Also, people weren't liking seeing the TMP workbee and my Musketaquid Class Shuttle in the Hybrid Hangarbay. So this weekend, I blocked in a rough design for a Hybrid-era workbee.

I want this ship. Plan and simple. It's on the list of things I want, right after a Constitution Refit and a TARDIS.

the mighty workerbee its older then many of the ships, docks, and stations it serves at.

Your ship has advanced so much. Its no surprise that people dedicated to the original series can't see a modified version of the enterprise. As far as there concerned its hearesy. I think your enterprise of course is just perfect and reflects in our current ideas of model building and imagination of what the ship looks like if the series was made in our time. It also shows that people outside paramount have more imagination then they do. Despite what people say the NX is cannon. so its design influence will naturally decend through the trek timeline.

The original series was made during a time when space ship designs were still smooth and clean with no real detail although the Enterprise was one of the first to show detail on ships. Next came the odessey with showed a new design influence. jump forward to the star trek movies and we see a Refurbished Enterprise which uses a combination of the classic enterprise using the new detail and design influences making the ships more detailed. This design influence is then seen in all other Star trek vessels since.

your ship as I had originally posted in the orginal forum represents the modern interpretation of what we (YOU) belive the enterprise to be. It fills the gap between the NX and the TOS movie comfortably.

As far as I'm concerned this Enterprise and the TOS one is one and the same. the only difference is one is more detailed then the other.

After all its really unfair to judge a persons design idea from one of a TV series that is almost 40 years old and made in a time when cars still had fins and everything was nice and shiny.

I totally agree, Maverick Eagle. I just think of the "difference" as being the improvement in camera resolution since the 60's, rather than them being physically different models.

Technology improves over time afterall...

...

I'm glad to see you've brough your model back, CL. I don't know what i'd do without my regular fix of pictures of this baby. :D

Mav: Thanks, man. Actually, I love the design of the TOS Enterprise. This ship is in no way a scold to Matt Jeffries or to TOS. The Original E started it all, man. She's a beautiful lady. I just liked this design, too - and wanted to run with it.

Thanks, guys!

I finished the Starfighter project - it's been released, and ported into Lightwave and Max - and the animation project wound up being more than my lappy could handle.

Thanks, Eric - post-graduation is going well, though I kinda feel like I'm treading water until the move. We're moving Memorial Day weekend, and the job starts June 1. Superman Returns June 30. Baby due July 6. Busy few months ahead... :)

Dann-O - Blender skills are made, not born, Padawan. Practice, you must! Conquer, you will. My butt you will kick!

Good grief - four pages already!

The workbee looks nice. It's funny - as ENTy and 2001 (the year, not the movie) as your refit looks, the workbee looks like a sand rail kitbashed with a Bell Rocketpack. Very 60's. I love it.

CrimsonLine
16th May 2006, 22:45
I hope somebody is.

Thanks, everyone! I'm not sold on the new workbee yet, either. It seems less functional and more gimmicky than the TMP model. It's hard to see where RCS thrusters would fit. And it's hard to see where one would mount external equipment like arms and cargo containers and the like. So I'm not sure it'll follow this pattern exactly.

One thing's for sure though. If it's got a glass cockpit, it'll need...a pilot.

17th May 2006, 02:48
Trekcross - nope; the design philosophy is "what if ENT really was a prequel, and Matt Jeffries was to design the 1701 today?" but I have no backstory.

I think baxart and Capt. Hunter came up with a backstory for it, but that's really not my interest.

CrimsonLine
26th May 2006, 22:32
Thanks! We are both very nervous and very excited. This is a whole new thing for us. But we believe God is in it, so we know things will work out well. The church is in a big building, but the congregation is small at the moment. Only about 20 people in a sanctuary that seats ten times that many. But we are psyched that we can be there when God turns things around (and we hope he does).

If you want to see our home, put the address into google Earth or whatever that Microsoft version is. Our parsonage shares the driveway with the church.

Do me one favor Cl, pass along Gods wisdom and knowledge through his words. Don't get like so many others that I have known in your position and put your own personal opinions to them. (I'll probably get in trouble for this, but oh well) I've always been told that God created the Bible so we may learn from him, not so we can learn what others think he wants us to learn. I hope you know what I mean by that statement.

(I'll probably get in trouble for this, but oh well) I've always been told that God created the Bible so we may learn from him, not so we can learn what others think he wants us to learn. I hope you know what I mean by that statement.

I hope to. It's impossible to completely eliminate personal opinion and experience from preaching. But I firmly believe that giving people access to what Denes thinks is thin gruel compared to giving people access to what God thinks.

This is probably my last post from South Hamilton, MA. Tonight, we unplug my wife's computer (our internet server) and it looks like Frontier Communications won't have us hooked up until Tuesday or Wednesday at the earliest. So, next time you hear from me, I should have changed my Location tag to Rochester, NY. See you on the flip side!

Trekcross - nope; the design philosophy is "what if ENT really was a prequel, and Matt Jeffries was to design the 1701 today?" but I have no backstory.

I think baxart and Capt. Hunter came up with a backstory for it, but that's really not my interest.

Not really backstory. It's a RPG that when everything is ready we're going to
essentially redo the original series. Haven't decided if we're going to make Enterprise actually part of the timeline as yet.

Trekcross - I did uniforms, insignia, a crew and a little backstory, I'm not sure what Capt. Hunter did, musta missed it. :o I've got a chapter of a Capt. April story that will be a prelude to my UniVerse stuff (when my proofreader gets it back to me, sheesh!) and a few other ideas. A ship this cool needed uniforms and a crew! I even bought a shirt and got a quote on a patch! (Am I a geek or what?)
I'm rebooting trek with my UniVerse stuff. First I've heard of the RPG idea.

Good luck with the move & the preachin', CL!

I hope to. It's impossible to completely eliminate personal opinion and experience from preaching. But I firmly believe that giving people access to what Denes thinks is thin gruel compared to giving people access to what God thinks.

I think you misunderstood my point. There is nothing wrong with relating your personal exprience to the Lord's teachings, the problem is when you force your personal opinions on your congregation and use God as a reason. An example: Years ago I attended a church where the preacher and his wife had there own ideas of what was accepted by God and what was not. These beliefs were based on their personal feelings not the actual words they used to back them up.

There is no way one can teach without first having experienced that which one teaches. Those that serve the Lord best are those that have turned from Him at one time and found their way back. I have always liked the Clint Eastwood movie Pale Rider and the most famous line in it, "A man has got to know his limitations". We all reach a point in our lives where we have no idea which way to go, so we turn to that which we have faith in, be it God or Allah or Budda, whatever, we seek guidance from a higher power.

Before I get too involved in this dialogue, good luck on your move, best wishes to you and your family and the family yet to be and hope to see more of the ship as time progresses. I've been working on mine, but have been so tired at night I couldn't post anything, but that will change soon hopefully. See you soon.

I've been working on transfering the lighting from ray shadows to buffered shadows. Still some work to do. I also added physical lighting elements in the repair shop. Those will come in the hangarbay, too.

On the move front, we are all moved in (but not all unpacked). The big snag has been - of course - our internet service. Right now, I am accessing e-mail and the web through dialup, and it's SLOOOOOOW compared to my old cable modem. Long story short, high-speed internet is about two weeks away for us.

So far in the job, I've been unpacking and working on my first sermon for tomorrow. Hasn't left much time for modeling. It'll come, though. It'll come.

I agree, the improved lighting really pays off. As a suggestion, how about adding some landing lights in for your shuttles? I don't remember seeing any in a specific Trek episode or movie, but i'm sure there would be something. It would certainly add to the realism too.

I've been off blender for over a month, what with the change of job, city, and birth of my baby. I've not had extended time for anything "free," and so what little I've had, I've put into 2D artwork. It's easier to do fifteen minutes of sketching, drawing, and inking than fifteen minutes of modeling. When things settle down, this will be the first thing I go back to, no doubt.

In the mean time, check out my 2D gallery thread, where I've put some new work recently. I'll continue to update that thread. The link is in my sig.

1. I finally lost - big time - in the art contest. I still have some paying art jobs to complete, but I'm taking a breather from 2D for a minute or two.

2. My full-time job, as a pastor, is VERY time-consuming, as is parenting (and husbanding, and son-ing...) which is no surprise, but things should ease up a bit soon.

3. I have a new lappy! A low-end MacBook Intel CoreDuo. 1.83 GHz, 512 MB RAM, 60 GB HD, about 5x faster than my old machine, and an amazing thing of beauty. It'll run the most recent release of Blender (actually, I'm having trouble running my OLD release of Blender...) and I should be getting back into the swing of things soon.

Anyway, updates are on the horizon. Not the NEAR horizon, but the horizon nonetheless...

I remember when the hybrid enterprise was no more then a idea almost a year and a half back. I was all for a hybrid version that would bridge the gap between the recent Enterprise series and the TOS Movies. this hybrid for all intents and purposes is the Constitution class ship we all knew and loved given at least in my view a long needed moderization. I have nothing against the old version. I loved the old version but I felt in order for the classes to make sense the design needed a upgrade into what we felt she might have looked liked with todays view of Sci-fi ship design.

I hope to see more of the hybrids as especially the one being done here and see how they compare with the existing designs. Maybe this might spur more moderizations of other TOS vessels.

the main reason I liked the hybrids is because they still show heavy human military influence in its construction. After the TOS series the TNG series of ships began to have significant changes in there designs that of gracefull sweeping lines and maybe influence of alien designs incorparated into there makes. The hybrid looks and feels like a military vessel and a human designed vessel at that designed to explore new worlds and new civilizations, but if need too. Defend herself and destroy or cripple her enemies.

Watch the series from ENT to TOS to TNG then VOY. the changes in design becomes quite obvious right at TNG and is prominant in DS9 and Voyager.

That's a cool ship by Gabe Koerner. I'm impressed with his work! Not what I would have done, but it's good work nonetheless.

I dunno if that can be rightfully considred a "hybrid"- but hell, i'd like to see paramount incorporate that or CL's version in the dvd re-release...:D

I wouldn't count on it.. Paramount doesn't really that kinda thought proccess. All they think about is cash cow and money, and hiring bad producers and directors who they themselves have very little original thinking.. . If it was from Lucas Films then yeah we might see a ship like this. Peter Jacksons company is a sure bet.

CrimsonLine, I found this on the web, it's from the new ships of the line calender and I wanted to show you the influence you and Burningman are having on TPTB. :)
The art's by Gabriel C. Koerner (if I remember right) he even included a take on the shuttle.
Hope you guys like!

Oh man I think my design just got blown out of the water..that is simply HOT!

I thought my enterprise caught alot of flak..other boards are beating this thing down left and right.

Apparently, these other sites seem to promote stiff canonism, as opposed to SFMs creative thinking. Personally, I dont think Gabriel Koerner's ship would fit into TOS at all, it looks to be too much a warship, or too detailed, im not sure. But as a ship, it looks GOOD! even if it isnt canon, so what?

-Btw, i would take the TOS enterprise, and texture it slightly like the ent-d, otherwise it would be overdone.

They consider many of the ships created by SFM members as abominations and that were all war fanatics because many of the ships are clearly more militeristic then offical cannon vessels. Also they view that its improper for us to create updates of certain designs and that we shouldn't make new designs for series that are being cancelled. like stargate. Basically they breath, eat, drink, and sleep star trek. They banned me for defense of the Hybrid Enterprise and for my own models which they said stole trek designs and mixed it in with Star Wars and others. its my fleet of small ships in my thread on this forum.

One of the many original trek ships they hated was a fantastic Trek vessel made here that was very original it was shaped liked a cross and was so alien looking and yet so original.

I cought the same kind of flak from mine but was happy as a clam when the guys at Polar lights and the Trek model team loved it.
I tend to look at thier rants as more of entertainment and find it funny that we can get them crazy by simply making a new ship.

I'm not so much into other forums, but i believe 3dgladiators is pretty normal, but not the same scale as SFM. What i can't understand is someone who will lambast a guy for being original, instead of slavishly adhering to "been there, done that" just b/c its canon.

THANKS for all the kind words, and for those who don't care for it, I completely respect if its not your taste.

And to the man who started this thread I definitely wouldn't say mine blows yours out of the water - we've each executed creatively valid, exciting takes on a design we love. Mine is meant to be more of a straight up reboot/rethink of the ship, but its funny, mine's gotten NX-01 comparisons as well.

I did the design of the revamp enterprise but the thread is actually started by Denes "Crimsonline"
He came across my design a while ago and wanted to model it. Mine is all 2d.

I really love your plated look. boout the opnly thing I'd have done differently was sweep the pylons back like the refit but I like that fast look. Great work and good to have you here!

BTW I found some hates by just googleing your name and enterprise and found it on a trek board

Yeah we probably should start another thread so we don't hijack CL thread too bad.

I opened the Hybrid Enterprise .blend file today to take a look at it again. It was the first time in many months. When I thought about it, I realized that I had let the project get so big that I could no longer handle it. It overwhelmed me. I wasn't just building the ship, I was doing a full interior of the hangar bay, and modeling all the rooms, and the warp core, and doing animations, and all sorts of things. It was too much.

I saved that file under a different name, and then deleted the hangar bay in the original file. I'm going to put my attention into finishing the exterior. Maybe some day I'll go back to the hangar deck, but finishing the exterior is job one. I'll put attention in to this ship and to Optimus Prime, and hopefully have the Hybrid finished by the end of the year.

So for those of you who like this ship - hope is on the way! I actually did a few minutes of work on her again today.

It also looks like there might be some artifacts forward of the tail, under the pylon. (unless those are windows, I can't tell from that angle.) Aside from the little mesh errors, it looks great, CL. I like the shuttlebay doors, they remind me of the doors on the 1701-A. Do they work?

I don't really have hull plating right now - the hull is perfectly smooth. I plan on adding gridlines and plating. But I built the hull using Blender's smoothing feature, which moves verts around so much that cutting hull plates will be very difficult.

I think CL is refering to the pinching near the shuttlebay.
There are two areas of pinching - the wrinkle coming diagonally from the corner of the shuttlebay I can't really do anything about at this point. But...

Those artifacts are the result of my trying to fix the mesh that is there now. I'm going to have to rebuild everything forward of the fantail and hangar doors afresh.

The shuttlebay doors are modeled on the refit 1701. The doors on burningman's drawings look from the side like they have curved door segments, but from the top view they look like refit-style doors. The refit doors are easier to build, so I went with those. They do not work, at present. They are all one piece.

There are two areas of pinching - the wrinkle coming diagonally from the corner of the shuttlebay I can't really do anything about at this point. But...

That's not really that bad. It almost looks like it could be intentional. *shrugs* If you used trueSpace, I could help you get rid of that but I know nothing of Blender beyond loading and rendering a mesh, which I just learned to do last week. ;)

Okay, here's my rebuilt secondary hull and hangar bay. I still have some substantial problems, just in different areas. :) Now, I have smoothing issues along the flanks of the fantail cutout - classic Enterprise problem! Sigh. But there is no wrinkle at the corner of the hangar deck cutout, and the modeling on it is much simpler. I used Sub-D to make my previous hangar deck and fantail. This one was done through booleans (fantail) and a simple spin move (hangar deck). Makes for a much cleaner mesh.

Of course, I have smoothing issues. This is my third build of the 2ndary hull. Maybe I *will* hit five builds....

Hi CrimsonLine, great model it's really coming along nicely.

Just idea, do you still have the previous hull? if you do you could cut the flanks of the fantail out of it and use it in the new hull, and see if that works.

CrimsonLine
1st Aug 2007, 21:17
Thanks, Ice-Dragon. Yes, I do have the previous hull, but because the re-built hull was designed to eliminate some problems in the old hull, it doesn't fit well, and can't really fit well. For one thing, it has an oddly different number of circumferential vertices, so that joining it to the new hull will make odd pinching points. Believe me, the thought has gone through my head a number of times, as I've been messing with this new hull. :)

Forcemaster2000
2nd Aug 2007, 00:20
New secondary hull looks good CL! Except for that little pinch of course...I'm sure you'll eventually get it though, if you can eliminate it in one area, you'll be able to do it in others as well.

scifieric
2nd Aug 2007, 00:22
That also happens in TrueSpace. I get around it by drawing a new line *very* close to the edge of the hull to reduce the size of the error.

I can illustrate if it will help!
