Challenge #6 - Bjaelrag - Fighter Chair

So, I thought I'd have a try this one. It wont be my first challenge in the world of 3d-modeling but my first over here at SFM.
First of is the sketch, fairly rough. I'm going for a comfortable padded fighter chair with a small control panel on the right armrest were I will also put the joystick. I'll have a plate in the floor with footpedals. I'll have atleast one monitor sitting somewhere around the chair.

looks interesting, but try to add some elements to the design that will help set it apart, and keep it unique...

Ok, here's the first picture. Still trying to make the chair functional and with lots of equipment.

JeffrySG: The unique part is the hard part

I made the railing for the chair to be able to be positioned.
I also did some work on the back of the chair.

What I got left to do:
-Make a seat belt.
-Maybe greeble the chair with som gadget stuff.
-Complete the fire extinguisher and som holders for it.
-Lots of stuff

yeah unique is the hard part all right!

You will need that footplate to the chair, so the user doesn't get his foot trapped in the floor rails and also the joystick control interface seems a little too high and far away. If the chair moves into position, perhaps it too also moves into position, or the chair moves towards it, thus meaning it's not awkward to climb into (such as trying to get into a racing car!)

It's a very good start for a first time modeller, keep up the good work!

Ok, so now I figured out what to do with the whole control panel/ joystick configuration. I hope you can see what I'm trying to do in the picture. Its supposed so be retracted away from the pilot to ease getting in and out.
And all of this will be integrated with the chair so it all can be moved on the railings.

Tobian: Hey, yup those footpedals will be needed, but now since I changed the approach a bit I will have to change them too I guess.
Heh, I dont know where you got the idea that I'm a first time modeler. I'm not saying Im an expert but I've been modeling for a couple of years now =)

Update:
-I've made a seatbelt.
-I put some materials to the seating.
-I worked some more on the front console.

Left to do:
-I still need to finish the fire extinguisher.
-I plan on making some kind of climate-center on the back of the seat. (It will basically be a box with hoses coming out on the top and are supposed to be connected to the pilots helmet.)
-Texture the displays on the concole.
-Greebles maybe? =)

Looking cool! The console back part is looking a little.. boxy it could all use chamfering and maybe add some small doors / access panels for getting at the control circuitry etc. Otherwise it's starting to look rock solid.

Perhaps you could give an indivation of how the chair moves? Maybe some concealed teeth on the rails? And maybe some power leads/controll leads coming out of the back of the console? A good paint job should make this look excellent, it already looks like a comfy seat

Thanks, I'm glad you like it.
Great tips from you also, thanks!
I'm aware of the boxy end of the console, I'm planning on adding a bigger diagonal box of some sort and then some plates, small boxes etc.
I'll see what I can do about the railing, I totally get what you mean.

Update:

I've added some boxes and plates to the console. I've also made power'sleds' for positioning the chair. And I've made 4 displays on the console.
