Looks like an openal (the sound routine thingies) problem, like Karajorma said, then. Click on the link Cannonfodder posted and read through the thread. I think they had instructions on how to fix it.

Wish you'd posted that earlier. I would have recognised the error straight away.

What you have there is an OpenAL 1.0 dll file. go to C:\Windows\system32 and delete it. You should reinstall OpenAL just to be sure. Here's a link to 1.1 in case you need it.

What happened is that OpenAL 1.1 probably did install but the 1.0 version is being used in preference for some reason. Deleting the DLL seems to work for most people.

yeah it's freakin' awesome

although during the mission when the pirates show up I got too far away from Baws, and it ended the mission supposedly because I went and disobeyed orders and engaged the enemy too soon or whatever . . . I mean come on! I was nowhere near the pirates

but it's a pretty awesome game, though I haven't played it much since I'm in beta on another game . . .

WOW! The very first Wing Commander missions! I must download this game. I only have Wing Commander from III and out.

We are the Borg. Lower your shields, and surrender your ships. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.

OK, it starts now, it turns out there were indeed 2 versions of the DLL. One installed by that creative labs installer, and I think the original one installed with my video card or something. Deleting the later solved the problem.

Glad to hear you got it to work

Remember to post a few comments about the game, good or bad. I'm sure the devs will appreciate it.

I wasn't blaming you. More kicking myself for not recognising the symptoms earlier so you could get to playing quicker.

Will do when I get to play it a bit more, it was midnight last night when I finally had a chance to try it out.

My first impression were very good. Did half the training mission before deciding to go to bed

I must say what I found very strange where the 3D models being used. I've played all the old WC games and really hate them not working to well on my new PC so I'm all for a new WC game. What struck me was that all the carriers look exactly like I remember them from the old games, that would be a good thing if it wasn't that they also looked the same graphic wise as if the same 3D models where being used with the same textures and such. Seeing where a couple of years further reality wise it sortof makes the 3D engine look old fashioned. Playing a little further you do notice, the 3D engine is nothing like what Origin used to use Also from some of the posts done on the board here, I know you guys have enhanced a lot of the fighter models, so maybe I just haven't looked good enough yet
Anyways, it may be just me but my first impression on that was that those models could use some more work to make em a little better without loosing the recognition with the originals.

Further first impression was that I do like alot how the game seems to have captured the feel of the original WC games as I remember them (not having have played them in years, except for Privateer that I played again recently) but modernized. It all felt very familiar, can't wait to get more gameplay in

Also I just love the little animations for the comm system
