Exclamation SpaceForce - Rogue Universe

Since I'm not getting any 3d done here in my vacation due to too much gaming (ie. as in this game) - I figure I may as well tell *cough..warn..cough* you folks about this game.
For "preferred-style-reference" my alltime favorite spacesims are I-War (Independencewar) 1+2 and Freespace2 - I did enjoy Freelancer a lot too.

It's similar to Freelancer.
The Goods:
  • Graphicwise this game is great - It has lots of settings that can make it look very eyecandy even on lower-end systems like mine.
  • Freemode - can be started from day 1 (without campaign involvement) +No restrictions.
  • Skillfriendly - enemy skill is adapted to your "experience" points.
  • Modfriendly! Textures, models etc. all lay in logical named directories and are NOT hidden in some special file that needs extraction. (textures are .tga or .dds files which photoshop can read - dds requires free plugin btw).
  • Physics - Example: maneuverability drop when your cargo hold is full. Or ship having to be repaired for "wear & tear" - aka maintainance.
  • Different startoff "classes", each with different strength & weakness - (ie. soldier has bonus on weapons, armor & maneuverability - trader bonus on cargo space/weight).
The Bads:
  • Horricfic voice acting - I'm not kidding, I stopped playing storymode after the first mission because this was so bad. Complete lack of emphasizing, emotion & mood. (Mainly the human faction voices).
  • Terrible manual - Poorly written, misleading on a few points...but worst of all...it's freaking incomplete. I've lost track of things that I had to find out by guessing or by accident.
  • Saving - No manual saving (it's per profile) And loading a saved profile will spawn you randomly in the system.
  • Autopilots - pretty much missing, you have to go to a location and drop a bookmark before you can autopilot anywhere.
  • Map - You can't select anything. Gives you NO info whatsoever on space station ruins, anomalies etc. (Only asteroids/duscloud, dockable stations, objectives & jumpgate)
  • Static images on ingame incoming messages
I'm registered on the game site's, (which is Home - Space Force - Rogue Universe if you want more info), and it seems a lot of things may be changed/updated/added in the next patch(es).
(1 guy is working on a proper manual which will be available on the site, dunno if it'll come in the patch)

Buttomline is though - I'm having SO much fun with game's "free" mode.

There's been lots of problems with that, several bugreports of different good joysticks on the forum.
They have promised to have fixed by the next patch which is coming soon. (1.2)
I still play it with keyboard & mouse myself.

Freelancer is really the key comparison.
"Story mode" is like freelancer - you start as Jim Anderson, (Human in the Earth Military Directorate) and follow his story. It's still free as you can go anywhere and do anything, just with story element.

"Free Mode";
  • Pick a race - (will determine your startlocation - ie. which system, and diplomacy levels)
  • Pick a picture - (again, can be edited with photoshop plugin)
  • Pick a 'class' - (See first post: There are 10; Adventurer, Engineer, Hacker, Headhunter, Pirate, Policeman, Scientist, Soldier, Spy & Trader)
  • Pick a ship - (only light fighters available from start)
  • Type in a callsign
Then start cruisin' around the various systems like you would after Freelancer's campaign was complete.
It's all singleplayer for now, whether they'll add it like in freelancer is yet to be determined.

Try the demo if you like - I'm quite sure it will turn the majority of people OFF this game. Downloads - Space Force - Rogue Universe
I say it's a rushed game that crosses the line into "incomplete".
It's more of a case of: "See if you can suck some fun out of this mediocre game" - of which I have managed to do a lot.
