Anyone here ever played Starfleet Command?

PC game. And I'm a total n00b, it seems, because I've spent that last hour playing the tutorial, trying to hit a stationary target with photon torpedoes. They just go right through the object without doing any damage.

If anyone has played the game, could you help me out? The manual says nothing about aiming torpedoes.

As I recall, there really isn't any aiming. As long as you have a target selected, any weapons in arc should fire as you order them to. The problem is probably the range you're firing at. StarFleet Command is a computer adaptation of the old Starfleet Battles board game. Standard-load photons tend to be inaccurate at even modest ranges, especially against any ECM shift. If push comes to shove and you're missing a lot, just close in to point blank range and alpha strike the bastard. You'll start getting photon hits then.

Yeah, all you've gotta do to target is right-click an object. And definitely fire your photorps from nearly point-blank if you want to hit it. You can get hits with phasers from much longer distances (even thought the game says differently) but you need to be close for the photorps.

Yea, the original SFC and SFC2 were both horrendous for photon torpedo tracking. It was deliberate because none of the designers had every bothered to realize that "tracking" and "targeting" means that you aim and take into account any lead time with your warheads.

So basically, teh only way to hit em is point blank or if they're stationary. But stationairy usually misses too.

Best method is to get a skilled officer for your gunner and your miss ratio goes down.

Current WIPS: None 'cause I'm a lazy bastard.

*sigh* this will take awhile I'm not too good at this game yet, though I'm pleased that i found it.

Thread moved to correct place.

As for the game, I used to play it a lot and I even went a bit into modding it. In any event, photon torpedoes sucked. That's why I went in and edited them out and re-organized the Romulan torpedoes so that one of them was the photon torpedo...had to change graphics too. I also didn't like the missiles so I took them out as well

Just as said before. Click on ther station so all your weapons are locked onto that one and as soon as the launcher is in firing arc (weapon is displayed green aside and it's written READY), shoot all weapons.
Maybe you should fire your secondary weapons once (there's some button for firing only one kind of weapon somewhere). Or you just need to shoot with a torpedo straight through (not pointing at any target).
Or another (quite simple and silly) idea: Your tactical officer is a jerk who can't look straight.

My guess would be the officer & ECM / ECCM too. I liked the missiles, they are a lot more likely to hit unless they launch that "flare" shuttle...

IIRC, a distance less than 2 units will also miss, and anything over 30 is a 100% miss. Optimal range is anything less than 8 but more than 2. It's something like that, but you get the idea. Basically, get close, but not too close.
