A good free video file converter

does anyone know of a good free if possible video converter? and if not a cheap one?

i found MOVAVi suite and it sounds pretty good, the free download seemed to work very nice aswell but could only do 30% of file, go figure. So i was just wondering if anyone knew of anything good out there

oh and im using windows xp

thanks

If you just want to encode AVI to MPEG1 i'd use TMPGEnc. It's not very versatile but it's free at least. In addition MPEG1 is also the most widely supported format i guess. So if you want everyone to be able to watch your files i'd go with MPEG1 anyway.

Hope that helps.

I found a free one that seemed to be able to convert anything, even the flash videos you find on sites like youtube, I'll try and remember what it's called

I pity the fool!

RADtools and virtualdub are also a nice set of tools that can do nifty conversion stuff...

RADTools and Virtual Dub are both free.

Now that i think about it, so is TMPGEnc

Current WIPS: None 'cause I'm a lazy bastard.

VideoHelp.com reviews links and apps
vdub is prolly the best bet if its a mpeg4 container. It sorta sucks for mpeg2 TMPGEnc last I heard is a free trial only I think its times but its been ages since I used it last mostly for subbing vobs. And muxing crap which vdub does a much better job of. Depends on source and output which app you use that url should help in that.

sticking 2 things together
More often dealing with audio.
The files avi mov mpg mkv mp4 are containers carrying audio and video and some times other crap. Something many fansubbers dont seem to relise when they transcode compressed audio into MORE compressed audio making it sound like a freaking fishbowl. >_<

Some refer to muxing when blending anything with video or audio. Such as subtitles (soft or hard) Overlays efx or anything that isnt in the source. A bit of a strech of definition but meh.
