Some laptops use Desktop CPUs, my old laptop (a Satellite A30-203) had a desktop CPU, no SpeedStep tech. at all, I even tried a 3.oghz CPU from work and it worked, so I assumed the same would work in my current laptop (Satellite 1130-Z25, the A30's predecessor). I've even done the odd upgrade in a few known-brand laptops at work, with great results...

Some laptops however have intergrated CPUs, which can't be upgraded at all, these are usually the sub-notebook laptops (12" screen types)...

Ah well, at least I have an excuse to build a PC for meself...

I just thought I'd mention (completely off topic) that your signature should say 'dipped', not 'dipt' (there's no such word).

His Wife is a figment, he's married to his right hand, the twat.

also most laptops are built with optimizing the cpu it's built with, so often the motherboards of those laptops will only support the one and only cpu it was shipped with. at least that's how it's been in my research/experience.

Well, it's a done issue, I have a pair of laptops coming for me to do up, not that the 1.8GHz will fit (one's a 166MHz AJP Laptop with game controls in the wrist rest area and the other's a Tecra 9000 (I think) PIII 1GHz)...
