Wooo!! Upgrades!!!

Well, sort of, I've just bought a Pentium (spelled Pentuim on the auction) 4 1.8GHz CPU for my laptop to replace my crappy Celeron 2.0ghz, cos Pentiums are a damned sight better at everything compared to Celery CPUs...

The CPU won't run in my laptop!!!!

Tried as much as I can, I have the latest bios, there's no settings or jumpers or switches to alter, but the CPU specs are almost identical to the Celery I have, only the Cache is bigger (512k as opposed to 128k) and the speed is "slower" (1.8GHz as opposed to 2.0GHz), I feel really dissapointed now....

So, uh any indication what the problem is? I have NO experience upgrading Laptop processors, so I can't be of any help. Then again I've never really heard of anyone even trying to switch out a laptop processor...

Are pentiums and celerons even of the same socket...?

^haha that's what I was thinking, also why even bother replacing it with one that's technically slower

I pity the fool!

Well, the CPU I bought is a Socket 478, the CPU I have is also a Socket 478, in most cases it's usually a case of a simple swap...

As for the speed issue, it's not how fast it is, it's how much Cache that's the issue, the Celeron as I've already stated is 128k, whereas the P4 is 512k, and that's what I'm after, everything else is technically identical, so there's no obvious reason why it shouldn't work, unless there's a Bios lock which prevents me from upgrading what is my property...

But anyway, I'm going to build a new PC with that CPU, so I can free up my main PC for MIDI, video editing and general gaming...

At least on desktop boards, there are many that will take either Pentium 4 or Celery, as long as they're both the same socket. Don't know if the same holds true for many lappy boards, but from 2cvbloke's experience, I'd say chances aren't very good

Most laptop processors are a special build, so I'm not too surprised that it didn't work. They are supposed to have some other things built into the core to help with power management and such. I am surprised to hear that a laptop had common socket in it.

There shall be two settings on any death-ray I build. Painless death. And not.
