I did a high detail model of the Event Horizon 600,000+ polys. It's available FREE at my site: ChaosImagery.co.uk: 3D artwork, models, animations, materials, tutorials and other 3D resources.

Amen to "Event Horizon", brilliant ornate styling, like a space-going cathedral. If I recall correctly, the engines on the side were inspired by part of Notre Dame.

Andromeda Ascendant in Andromeda season 1, when she was purple. I really liked the idea of a purple space ship. It was such a shame that they recoloured all their stock footage to be blue for season 2, and then turned her battleship grey for season 3 onwards.

But my favourite "big ship" is the Star Destroyer from Star Wars, that opening shot when it rumbles overhead spitting laser death is one of my all-time favourites. Enormously large, immensely powerful, a bold wedge shape that is distinctive at a distance but with enough detail to make a close-up examination interesting. One of the first ships I ever saw that looked as large as it was meant to be.

For fighters and small ships, the best for me is easily the Viper Mk II, the absolute best updating of a classic design ever. The original series Viper was great, built from distinctive shapes. You could tell it was a high-performance fighter from the shape alone, with the enormous intakes and engines and stubby wings. The Mark II is just that design grown up, simultaneously futuristic and retro in exactly the right proportions. It made the Mark VII look like a bland, generic starfighter designed by committee by comparison.

Ack ack ack. Ack ack! ACK ACK ACK!
Do not run. I am your friend.
