The Secretary in my department at work pays about $4000.00 (US) a year for her car insurance. Of course that's the result of several tickets, (underage) drunk driving, and a bench warrant. I think a bit of 'drunk and disorderly' was added to the mix too. You'd never expect it, if you saw her.

I pay about $1000.00/yr. It seems that by the time I get to an age that means lower rates, there's an across-the-board rate increase.

You think that is bad. I bought my first car aged 21 - three years after passing my test. Paid about £800 for a ford fiesta 1.1. Had a quote from the AA for £1500 third party f&f - that was 11 years ago. I dred to think what they would charge now.

In the end I managed to get it down to about £800.

Still paying £500 a year now - but I am driving a Lotus Elan
