DVD Recorder Need info.

Hey Guys.. I am looking to get a dvd recorder, but need some info. Do dvd recorders (non computers recorders) use the same disc as the ones used for computers?

Thanks

yes and no. There are dvd+r and dvd-r as werll as single layer and dual layer. Some set top units will only record to one or the other, or do one good and fail at the other. Beyond this there are the DISCs themselfs. Some are utter crap others really good. NOW the issue isnt the rstamped on the disc but the manufacturer of the disc richo mcc cmc mag are the big 3
Ricoh is th ebest medium for high speed burns and consistant quality. Mcc is next but fails as well with a high per disc error rate. (bit by bit errors usualy not noticeable on data discs but easily seen on dvd video as green puke if the errors are to closely clustered.)
CMC mag is the ultamate worst. 16X discs fail the simple nero verify at 8x, often they wont register with any drive as medium faster than 6X Avoid tyhese at all cost

Sadly CMC MAG is th emost common since it apparently is the cheapest junk out there.
Currently only disc using RICOH I know of are memorex 50 pacs with the upc date of 2005 anything else is cmc mag garbage.
Check out VideoHelp.com for other reviews keep in mind regionaly IE between states manufacturers package diffrently SO far Memorex are the only ones that are consistant on the dvd+r 16X discs.

On a note personaly I prefer dvd+r it will play on all of my set tops, I have accumilated over 7 of the things (eh) from a 7700 sony thats not even progressive video to a similar ages changer as well as some really cheap phillips and a samsung hdmi. Oh as well newer units play high error discs with less issue than older units so keep this in mind when your making discs, as well a desktop will make better discs than those set tops at a much lower cost with better quality burns. (this is only consideration if your looking to buy one over the other) As well dvd video slower burn = better quality and life
Hope this helps

What disks you can use are usually printed on teh box.

You are better off getting a DVD recorder with a built in hard drive though, recording staight to DVD wont allow you much record time.

sony = cmc mag the brand on the spindle doesnt mean its good. Example Fuji dvdrs used to be good then the started using cmc mag discs. My coaster ratio went from 0 to close to 70% when they changed manufacturer.

Get a app called dvdidentifier its avalible for dl from that url I gave earlier itll show the manufacturer of the discs.
As wel that site will list these recorders and what brands or manu work best on them.

Keep in mind settops are more picky on media and disc type even if most say -+ compatable.

You guys forgot DVD-RAM, for Panasonic/JVC units.

I have a Panasonic- cracking quality, compatible with everything except -RW discs, and easy to set up and use. The Sony machines are generally good, but as MKF said earlier, the discs are junk. Remember too that you'll pay roughly a £70-80 premium just for the Sony sticker.
