Monitor aspect ratio?

I've been wondering recently what the most common monitor resolution is, even though I'm pretty sure it's 1280x1024, at least based on what's available from various companies. The problem is that I found out what an oddball resolution that is, since it's a 5:4 aspect ratio. According to this chart: (Image:Video Standards.svg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia), 5:4 is the odd one out, with most resolutions being 4:3. I've read elsewhere that TV is a 4:3 aspect ratio (with non-square pixels).

I suppose another part of this question would be what aspect ratio should we use for creating backgrounds, although that's probably driven by what size monitor the person creating the background has.

i'de say if you look at TVs and even monitors, 4:3 rez are getting less and less support. we have 3 tv and 3 monitors and one i mac here..all 3 tv are 16:9, same thing with monitors..only the imac, a first generation, is a 4:3 one.

Laptops, LCD's, and TV's are going to 16:9... which is fine if you're watching a movie... but if you're trying to read text it gets distracting, because there's only so much info the human eye can take in horizontally ...

This is why on my new flat panel monitors, I have sidebars and trillian docked on either side, to squeeze text back down to a level that I can comfortably read for long periods of time.

Yeah 16:9 is going to be the prominent res... tho I have to admit I personally prefer 4:3 on a comp...

Wierd, just looking at Dell's offerings, they have 11 monitors at a 16:10 (1.6:1) aspect ratio, but none at 16:9 (1.778:1).

I'm using 2x Philips Brilliance 109P2 CRT's at 1280x1024 x85hz

They'll handle higher res though at a lower refresh, which causes major eyestrain so I opt for the better refresh.

Bear in mind though that they're 4:3 shaped screens.

I put 16:9, but it's really more like 16:10

though for total space you could call it 32:10

You mean 5:4, if you're running 1280x1024 without any distortion
