Cool Galaxy M81 revealed in high-res!

Cosmic Log : Galaxy revealed in high-res

Quote:
"The Hubble Space Telescope has sent back the best view yet of a picture-perfect galaxy known as M81 or Bode's Galaxy, resolving single points of starlight as well as star clusters and glowing regions of fluorescent gas.

"The amazing detail in this image took our breath away," Andreas Zezas, an astronomer at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, said in a news release unveiling the image. "We can see individual stars like tiny grains of sand."

Dumb question, probably: can't current versions of Photoshop take an image like that and create a useable HDRI file? Or has too much of the dynamic range already been removed?

it's a jpeg, all the dynamic range has been removed

but seeing as it's just bright dots on a black background you could probably do something with it in a HDR app

I pity the fool!

I know the JPEG loses the range, but they also have a TIFF file of some 600+ mb

Same effect on dynamic range?

Depends on the information in the tiff. IE colour depth etc. To note most of these are false colour or extremly long exposures. I didnt read up on how the image was attained IE radiographic etc.
A bit more visualy intresting
HubbleSite - NewsCenter - The Carina Nebula: Star Birth in the Extreme (04/24/2007) - Release Images
granted I would hate to see this as a 3d ship backdrop.

So much noise...someone should tell NASA to turn down the ISO on that thing

Also, apparently opening a 74 meg jpeg is a sure way to max out my memory

It's not a habit, it's cool, I feel alive...
