| Would you kindly? | Terrible ending. This show has been running in place for the last three years, and last night was the biggest middle finger to the audience yet. spoiler zone ahead:::::::::::::: I've read a few things about how clever the ending is supposed to be, that most of the patrons in the diner were from previous episodes and about 4 of these people had reason to kill Tony Soprano (this has been debunked). And that messages had been sprinkled about earlier this season that should clue me into "what really happened", that Tony is dead and I'm a pleeb if I can't connect the dots. One post I read on the HBO board (where there is much anger) said that we should understand Tony died because he ate an orange at some point, like Vito in the Godfather did just before he died. Seriously, give me a break. I didn't watch the Sopranos with the same frame of mind as someone who studies the "Abby Road" album cover. Just tell the damn story, David Chase! I don't need to see Tony kick the bucket. I only wanted some feeling of closure or a suitable milestone. Perhaps Tony goes to prison, or Junior dies, or Tony becomes boss over Phil's crew and now has a foothold in New York... Something better than a black screen. This was such a good show during the first two seasons. Even season three was fairly watchable. I've toughed out seasons four, five, and six hoping the show would turn around. To the credit of the cast, I've watched the show mainly for the characters. The storytelling on the other hand... I can only imagine how great this show could have been with writers who were willing to entertain the audience. What the (non) ending really felt like was something that could easily be ignored later when they decide to make a movie. And as a formerly loyal viewer, excuse me while I decide to join the droves of people staying home. The producers of other shows (eg: Galactica) should take a clue from this show. Stop stringing along the audience and TELL A STORY! |

I would hate for the final season of Galactica to emulate The Soprano's pacing, perpetual red herring plot threads, or it's refusal to offer an emotionally satisfying conclusion. I've watched all six seasons of The Sopranos. It has taken roughly 8 or 9 years to bring the entire show to air, with several extended breaks between seasons. Sunday night was not an episode that said thank you to the fans or rewarded them for following the series. | |

| Is Baaaaack... | Chase strikes me as pretty mercurial in his attitude towards fans of the Sopranos. Moore seems less so wrt BSG, which is good. He's also specifically stated that they have plotted out a beginning, middle and end for BSG2Kx, and that we are coming into the end. So it would seem that he intends to provide an actual resolution. As for the Sopranos, I've got the finale Tivo'd but have not had the chance to watch it yet. I am generally aware of the plot points, and know about the cut-to-black. Reasonable speculation seems to be (invisotext for spoilers)Tony got whacked and the cut to black was him dying - consistent with Bobby Baccalieri saying "you don't hear it coming." We can't know for sure, which is frustrating, but it makes sense. |

| Would you kindly? | SPOILERS :::::::::::::: I agree the cut to black implies Tony is dead, but story-wise they haven't set it up. The recent story threads leave nobody in power who would carry out such a hit. Tony had a sitdown with Phil's #2 (Butchie) and had his blessing to "take care of" Phil. Little Carmine would never hit Tony - he is, after all, the person who was trying to bring Phil to the table to avoid a war between NY and NJ. As the story stands there's nobody with the stripes or motivation to hit Tony. Some no-name in a ratty old Member's Only jacket aside, it doesn't work. I actually like the previous scene with Tony and Junior. Tony sees how far Junior has slipped and can no longer hold his grudge against him. In the end Tony discovers Uncle Junior doesn't remember Tony or his time as Cappo. "You and my dad used to run North Jersey." "We did? ... that's nice." Junior lights up and Tony leaves him in peace. That was the end of a chapter and (to long time viewers like me) a far better ending. The following scene adds nothing IMHO. |
