| Computer Specs Hello all, its been a while since i was in here, but ive been busy with school, learnin the trade. I was wonderin what yall think a decent computer setup for a Maya PC is. I was working on some school work this past couple of weeks and I thought it was moving kindof slow. I Got a XP, Athlon X2 3800+, Nvidia 6600GT, and 1GB of ram, with a 250GB Seagate IDE drive. Also, a Nforce GA-K8N-SLI mobo. Now, i figure if i want the speed to go faster, ill need to upgrade the RAM a bit more, but anyone have any other suggestions? My school uses rather crappy computers so im not sure what i need for Maya. Or really any 3d program. Any help would be appreciated. |

| SFM Guru | To answer the question, Maya should run fine on that machine just fine (I was able to get Maya 7 running on a craptastic laptop with a PIII 650MHz, 512MB RAM, & S3 Savage 8MB). If the interaction's slow, you'll either need to get a quadro or more RAM or both. If you learn to love NURBS, you can run complex geometry pretty fast on almost anything. If you want faster render times, you'll need a quicker CPU, a quadro card (so you can render through Gelato), & more RAM. Or, if you have other computers on your network, turn them into slaves (aside from the 19.2GHz main workstation, I leech power off the other computers in the house, adding another 24GHz). You can also set yourself up with a cheap 2ch RAID array @ RAID0 for your workspace. That should run you around $130. ..& just 'cause: Intel Xeon x3220 2.4 GHz (x2 = 19.2 GHz) Supermicro X7DA3+ mobo + zero channel raid Micron 2GB DD2 667 ECC fully buffered (x8) nVidia Quadro FX5500G w/ genlock Areca arc-1680 PCIe array raid adapter Seagate Cheetah 15k SAS 73GB (x24 8 @ RAID5, 16 @ RAID0)* M-Audio Delta 1010 audio controller Aja Xena 2Ke 12 bit dual hd-sdi 4:4:4:4 video I/O board Dell 2407WFP 24 inch LCD (x2) JVC DT-V24L1DU 24 inch broadcast studio monitor Microsoft Ergonomic keyboard 4000 Logitech MX Revolution mouse 3DConnexion SpaceExplorer Contour Shuttle-Pro 2 NLE Controller Saitek X52 Pro Flight System** Iomega REV Plextor PX-B900A Blu-ray drive Plextor PX-810SA DVDRW Internal Floppy Drive BIG desk with custom air ducting system*** *just so I can run Smoke & Flame **yes, I play games on here too ***temporary; made out of cardboard boxes connected to the AC vent |

| Frankly, lets do a quick rundown.... X2 3800: Duel Core = a must for us 3D renderer types, but as rendering is very VERY CPU intencive, you could stand to boost thist. Check your mobo's socket type, if it's AM2, go ahead and pick up a new Duel Core, they are incredibly cheap right now. If it's Socket 939, I'd say hold off. Your chip ain't THAT bad. ![]() Ram: Ahh...this here could post a dlight problem on large renders. I was amazed at the difference going from 1 gig to 2 gigs made. I'd definatly concider upping that to 2 gigs. Vid Card: Aside from in-maya-working, no worries. What you have should be plenty, just don't expect to run Crysis on release day. |
