| "Astrophysicist Replaces Supercomputer with Eight PlayStation 3s" O_o So apparently the PS3 *IS* good for something, if not easily programmable games Astrophysicist Replaces Supercomputer with a Cluster of Eight PlayStation 3s Quote:

| quite ironic actually, with the amount of money he wasted on buying the PS3s, and the time spent integrating them and configuring them to support parallelism, he could have BOUGHT a single quad core machine with the equivilant power and had a healthy dose of cash left over. Just because you can do something, doesn't mean you should. A PS3 is about as powerful as a 2.4ghz desktop.... go figure. |

| actually no, your a little off on the target nadesico.. For what he is doing, the PS3s mutli-pipleine cell processors is superior to what even a quad core desktop can achieve. This is about computation rather than GHz or RAM. Different animal. A PC would be terrible at this. Your average "super computer" would suck as a desktop and doing desktop work but its very good at what its used for. Not all computers are equal at different tasks. Desktop PCs and their Processors are developed for a purpose that limits them in some areas. |

| That i can go with, however the cell processor (while it sucks as a gaming or desktop unit) is quite a piece of engineering and has many of the capabilities that one looks for in CPUs for that applications (supercomputing). |

| SFM Obsessed | the PS3 is **** but the cell does have a market for floating point calculations. But its still a **** console thats already been supassed by PCs in terms of graphics brute power. I laff when i see PS3s and Xbox360s strugle with games that i see run fine on pcs Even in SD |

| I think the point isnt the floating point calculation, but the 8 vector processing cores. I can see how being able to execute the same command on multiple data sets and therefore a total of 8 basic commands at a time on bigger amounts of data can be useful in computation, if the same action will be repeated a LOT. |
