Best movie soundtrack? Four way tie between:
Serenity
Star Trek II
Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back
Superman: The Motion Picture

Television show soundtrack? Three way tie between:
X-Files
Babylon 5

Battlestar Galactica (I have all three soundtracks plus the miniseries - it's my most listened to playlist)

Close Runners Up
Matrix Revolutions and Reloaded
Star Trek: The Motion Picture
Star Wars: A New Hope
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Signs (it's technically as Sci-Fi Movie ... sorta)
Blade Runner

Oh, how I could go on. 6.1 days of music stored on my iPod (not counting audiobooks) and well past half of it is movie and tv soundtracks.

For sci-fi movie soundtrack, I'd say either The Island of Transformers. For TV show music, deffinitely Battlestar.

The music for Donnie Darko is definitely one of the best movie sound tracks for me. I don't really have a favourite though as there are films with great pieces of music, but the best ones are where you don't really notice the music as it is simply, subtly adding to the overall viewing experience in ways that you don't even realise. Check out the soundtrack to Silent Hill for a great example - half the time you don't even realise that there is music in the background as it is done in such a way that it becomes a part of the atmosphere for each scene.

A lot of Sci-fi from the 50's, 60's and early 70's has brilliant music, such as Quatermass, Barberella (perfect for the movie style), 2001 and so on. There are simply too many to pick a single one

For TV, Galactica is pretty good, but they do add the odd jarring moment, such as the use of Hendrix. Again, there have been a lot of iconic theme tunes, such as Doctor Who, Blake's 7, Quatermass and so on.

That would be enough Michael Bay for me to pull an 'Event Horizon' on my eyeballs.

Now that you mention it , the "Event Horizon" soundtrack release is a curious beast, mixing orchestral terror with techno design. Very suggestive: one can imagine an entirely different film behind it, far scarier.

Animé TV series' soundtracks have the advantage of, in order to be so editor-friendly, really condensing so much emotion per minute.

Just finished the entire series of Babylon 5. Well written, good acting, excellent execution. The F/X are a little dissapointing, but considering it was the '90s, no complaints there . Then i started watching an episode from the first season of Star Trek Deep Space Nine; and i was cringing at the poor dialogue and bad acting. almost made me wish for Attack of the Clones again .

So, Firefly is still my favorite, but B5 is the best, by far.

Babylon 5 followed by BSG and Firefly

Soundtrack
B5 tied with BSG (All seasons of both)

nothing else comes close.
