i dont find the vilains flat. they may be a bit stereotyped, but not as much as the heroes.
in fact, the only flat and boring characters are alto ranka and shiryl. they are the only ones that dont have a real BG.

the producers needed to keep the conspiracy simple so anyone can understand it. you all know how japanses animes can drive people completely crazy with their complexes conspirations...
so this one sounds silly.

and lol killjoy... japanese real adult relationships ????? that does not exist.

Do you believe in Love?

Most of the time the main villains have twice the depth of american villains, but these ones don't even have american levels.

Naw they didn't need to keep it simple rather it's Kawamori's first attempt at such a plot.

And if you think that about the adult relationship's bit then you need to watch more anime.

I've watched anime for years, I was saying that as my overall complaint for much of what I've seen over that time. Especially in these long drawn out dramatic pieces that tend to make no sense whatsoever. The complexities of their conspiracies and overall general setups are more often that not so convaluted and twisted that it's a headache just tryying to figure out whoe should be fighting who and why.

Gundam SEED and SEED Destiny are perfect examples of this I can't count how many times the sides flipped and then come to find out there's a third player behind the scene more than halfway through the damn thing. I dunno give me a straight story with clear definitions of good vs evil and no holds barred ass whoopery hero gets the girl and I'm all good. I hate these warmed over, re spliced, diced salt and pepper sprinkled stories that get pushed back on us with new lights and pretty pictures that we're supposed to roll over and say Ohhh thanks I sho was waitin fo dis one.

Yeah yer right about that relationships in these stories but they've done good relation ships before and had it work out fine like Blue Gender, Apple Seed, Hell Even Robotech, Macross Saga got it right sure it was triangle but it was believable, the crap between Rank< Alto and Sheryl is Laughable at best because of Ranka's Appearance. She looks like she's 10 and yet we're supposed to believe she's 16 and she poses a true option in a relationship category for Alto, Please, her advances and attraction factor come of as 5th grade childish infatuations at best.

I can better understand Klan and her attraction for Michael than Ranka, at least her situation makes some sort of sense and is explained. Unfortuately they decided to kill that whole viable relationship off which again makes no sense but when does this stuff ever make sense. Don't get me wrong I like it but I certainly have more complaint about it right now than praise, I can only hope the next episodes put some things in perspective.

Simon Abrams: Ok...These things are seriously impairing my ability to think rationally.
Dana Crutchfield: What?

I happen to love Gudam Seed and Seed Destiny. even things can get confuseing. The one thing that you could count on was

1. Kira Whoopen ass
2. Asthuran being a typical conflicted person and whoopen ass
3. Cagalri always crying and yelling
4. Shinn being anouying as hell and getting his butt whooped.

The only other Robotech / Macross operetta that I enjoyed after the orginal trio was Macross Plus. all the other ones seemed too cheezy to watch. Shadow chronicals. pffft. Did they have to make all thier male toons extra buff like they took daily doses of ROIDs.

I wish I could comment as I adore anime and Macross, but alas, the show's not being aired on American networks..I'll have to wait for the English DVD I suppose....

What I liked from the characters is that there is a subtle variation on the stereotypes:

-Alto is not your usual "bishounen": there is a certain justification for his looks, he hates being teased about it, and he's rather an asshole when dealing with Ranka or Sheryl or everyone else. I just love his insensitiveness and how he keeps this bit apart from others.

-Sheryl is an asshole in her own way : she teases, dares or creates uncomfortable situations for Alto et al., and then watches things unfold with a bemused expression in her face.

In a way, both are observers of others, Alto in a passive way and Sheryl in an active one. That moviemaking episode showed them so quite well.
