| This time you see | Building a new PC! At long last, some might say! ![]() I've been wheezing along with an Athlon XP2100+ for the past few years now, keeping it running smoothly, but the time has come to push the boat out and treat myself to a new toy. ![]() An Antec P182 arrived yesterday morning, and I'm now planning to fill it with all sorts- so far I've got a 650W PSU on the way, and there's a Core2 Q6600, 4GB of 800MHz DDRII RAM and an nVidia 8800 GTS earmarked for it as well. I'm looking forward to seeing if there's much of a performance increase. ![]() Happy days. |

| This time you see | Well, it's going to be running Windows (Windows XP Pro 64, to be specific) which I'm not entirely chuffed about, but it's the only real alternative for a Photoshop/Lightwave machine to Mac OS, and I'd decided some time ago that the iMac's were a waste of money and the MacPro- as good a machine as it is- isn't worth me doubling my budget. Being a Windows machine, I'll see about half of those specs in real-world use, but Windows will be well fed. |

| SFM Guru | Had my new setup which is nearly identical to yours for couple of weeks now, and I love it. Hope it's the new G92 GTS you are getting. And dont worry about the XP64 Pro, I've ran it for over a year at work without any real problems. It was the only real choice for the new home comp too. |

| i found a bargain which is very similar to that one: q6600, 2gb 800mhz ddr2, g8800gt (gt is half the price for 80% of the performance of the gts) and a 500gig sata2, for 800 euros. i suspect the falling dollar is helping me out here once it arrives ill be poping in another 2gb for extra fps fun. |

| SFM Guru | *hugs his quad core* Half the price? Not really, and the lack of GT's on the market is (or at least was) a big factor when putting together a new machine. But if you are on budget, GT is the way to go. @Samurai: You might want to consider getting another 4GB of ram while you are at it... it's dirt cheap these days and you really dont have to worry about running out of memory for a while |

| Administrator | Greg - You're building the same PC I built just before Christmas. Right down to the P182 case. You'll be happy with it mate. I'm even running *gasp!* Vista on it with absolutely no problems. Very happy with it.My only question is - Why a GTS and not a GT? Maybe there's been a price drop now but when I bought mine, the GTS was actually more expensive and the GT is a mouse's fart away from the power of a GTX for half the price... |
