| Metalworking Space Marine Armor Hey there, I'm new to the forums so hi everybody. Theres nowhere i can truly put this on the internet but this seemed like a sensible place. I've been working on a set of schematics for some space marine armor (warhammer 40,000) and have been thinking of actually creating some for a person to wear/model. I know that space marines are about twice the size of an average human but the armor can be scaled down appropriately. what has been puzzling be however is what to make it from. obviously i can't make it out of that titanium galvanised ceramic stuff that space marine armor is supposed to be made of because one it hasn't been created yet (or has it?) and two no average human could possibly move in it. So would a stregnthened aluminium do the job? All i want is it to look the part, and not actually be strong enough to be a modern day walking war machine. Yeah it would take a long time to create, but if it's possible, then why not. If anyones got any ideas or knows of a forum where this would be best suited, i would be grateful for a reply. Thanks Sparta |

| Better Dead Than Red | I think a better material to use would be plastic, because even though aluminum is a light weight metal it will still be very heavy to wear |

| DON'T OPEN THAT!! | That is so sweet, Yeah a vacuformed polystyrene armor set would be the way to go IMHO. |

| SFM Oracle | Well, the material hasn't been created yet, at least I could not find anything scientific about it. But what does that mean anyway; you also don't have a scientific evidence for UFOs, but we all know they exists. (No discussion about this issue here, please )The sheer idea issues that mankind would have become far more advanced in strength and stamina. So, for your idea, I would recommend something fibreglass. Metal and metal alloys would give a good imitation of the brute strength they represent, but as said, you would have to be the Hulk to wear it. Simple plastics on the other side are very easy to damage. One bad step, one hard scratch over it and your armour is gone. Fibreglass is the best mediation between lightweight handiness and sufficient integrity. Just my thoughts. |

| Some of the replica armor that I've seen worn at Renaissance Faires is made of aircraft aluminum (or anodized aluminum). From what I was told, an entire suit of platemail weighs under 30 pounds, as opposed to 80 for steel. With that weight spread over your entire body, it shouldn't feel heavy at all. No more than say, football pads or motocross gear. |

| thanks for the ideas guys, anyone thought of carbon fiber? anyway. i suppose a plastic with a really good form of protection over it should work. i'll test run some materials and see how they work out... one of my mates said to use a thick acrylic, and i'm thinking... hmmmm a suit of armor made of acrylic you say.... thats going to weigh tons.... but still... worth a try |

| SFM Obsessed | Carbon Fiber would be the expensive way to go. I'd use durable materials in areas that could get easy wear (feet, legs, & hands). But in places like the chest/back, stomach, shoulders, and helmet I'd use lighter/thinner materials. Also think about ventilation in the helmet and the torso. Old computer case fans are small, light weight, and low power (12volt & .2 amp) enough for easy use. Even a really old 266mhz cpu fan (very thin and small) would give some nice & quiet venting for the helmet. |
