Why? it does not need a sequal it a great film on it own.
Another WTF was Lost Boys 2. yeah I wanted a sequal to that when I first saw it, but to much time has past ot go back to both movies. It likke some one going out and making a sequal to Citerzen Kane Now.

That movie has been a running joke among my friends for a year or more now. This may be the greatest intel find we've had so far. :P

It's so pleasing, almost regardless of the outcome we will be able to criticize it all to hell! If it's anything like the original, it will be pure fodder, and if it becomes some... like most other remakes/general movies these days, I'm sure we'll find something to laugh at. It's win win!

You guys quite sure this was such a great movie? You see, I thought so too, I LOVED it when I was a kid. Then, almost 20 (ugh!) years later I remembered this movie, got nostalgic, and actually managed to find myself a copy. For today's standards, this movie is incredibly cheezy. Everything is substandard, I won't go into effects as that's not really fair from today's point of view, but I was shocked with how the characters and overall plot were really, really poor. Alien species design sucked for the most part as well. I guess it was good enough for the 6 year old kid that I was when I first saw it.. Today, all I can say is that it essentially wanted to get on the Star Wars bandwagon, and failed for the most part.
That said, the overall idea could use refurbishing, as there was potential here. That's why I'm not so sure about the "son of" type of sequel.. I would much rather see a re-imagination, like they did with BSG.

I still realy enjoy the movie. for an 80's flick i think it,s realy nice specialy when you think it's some of the first 3D scenes in a feature film. Naturally if you look at it with today's standards it's gonna look like crap. but considering it's 20 something years old, i still think it's good. It did become a cult classic after all.

Especially when you consider that its the movie that got Thornton away from physical effects and into CGI. Without Starfighter, who knows - we may not have had Foundation Imaging at all, B5 and everything that FI did afterwards, including a lot of the ST effects.

Starfighter is not just nostalgia, its important CGI history.

No question is a stupid question if you don't know the answer - If you need help (and you can find us), ask the (Sens)A-Team.

Great, more 'Holywood's run out of ideas' rants. Unless you want them to completely abandon the concept of what is essentially good vs. evil movies, you'll be seeing more or less similar plots all over the place.
Personally I don't mind seeing a proven story retold from today's point of view. Like it or not, it's extremely difficult, if not impossible, to do a 100% original movie of this type these days. I avoid thinking about originality alltogether and instead focus on how well was the story told this time.
Case in point, Battlestar Galactica, reimagined series. Can't say it's an original story, but it was done so well it pretty much counts as a standalone product. Whether or not you like the new (or old) series, there's no disputing the fact that in re-telling this story went enormous amounts of effort and damn fine work. I have high hopes the new Starfighter will follow this pattern and outshine the original.

edit: I notice this is becoming a CGI debate. To repeat myself, I wasn't talking about the effects work. It was great for it's time, it made history being the first movie to employ CGI in the way it did - I don't dispute that, trashing it's effects 24 years after it's release would be completely and utterly pointless. What I was saying is, the plot, characters, and creature design were substandard, comparing it to the big sci fi movies of the era.
But that might not be fair to say either, as it's real competition was Star Wars, a very tough franchise to compete with.

I agree, it did have VERY tough competition, lots of people don't know this, but Star Wars, like it or not, was and is still considered a Master Peice of movie making. Like the movie or not, it's a fact. So EVERY MOVIE made since then in the Sci-Fi genra as been trying to reach that goal, but it can't be reach, best you can do is come close second.

But Last Starfighter did make some breaktroughs in CG. I did'nt personnaly think the plot and character were that bad..remember this was made as a teen flick more then a real scifi movie
