Need Mouse advice

Some time late 2007 I ordered the MX Revolution mouse.
I was a bit baffled when I realized that there was no way to assign the 3rd mouse button to any key, but I found a nice script edit called "uberOptions" that allows that (and more).

I love the mouse, it's a precise lightweight mouse, and it's got a total of 8 fully customizable buttons, excluding the 5 possible buttons on the mouse wheel.

It just...seems to break a little too fast. After 2 months, it got harder and harder to spin the wheel (and I'm not an excessive scroller, I use cruise up/down keys). Got it replaced, and now about 2 months after I got the replacement...the other wheel (front, middle back buttons) stopped working in the forward direction (for the record, I tried as hard as I could without voiding the warranty to check if dirt was blocking anything).

I understand this is not a gaming mouse or anything, but I think 2 months is not a good average for buttons failing that I don't even use excessively.

So I'm not sure, should I give it another chance and get it replaced, or exchange it for something else? I'd keep this one any day, but getting it replaced on a bi-monthly base is kind of annoying

Time to move on to another mouse type. Especially if you had to get an unofficial script to make use of a button.

Have you looked at other Logitech's?

I've got a corded optical Mx500 and it's still running like the day I got it. It's nearly the same set-up with 8 buttons, but it only has 1 on the wheel. Small trade off, because every 5 button wheel mouse I've had has had design flaws in the wheel and wears out quickly.

The ineptitude of the Setpoint software is not the issue...the mouse breaking too fast is!

I used to own an Mx518 for 3 years until it broke and decidedto get something more up to date...
I thought about a G9, but again no 3rd button, and not even a key close to the wheel that could be used as a replacement, so no option.
The G5 is just a 518 minus one button plus a laser, plus an awful pattern on the surface.
The G7 is pretty much the same, just minus another button...

If you know of a mouse with a lot of buttons (assignable to functions in games or other apps) please let me know, after the luxury of 8-9 application specific buttons I don't really want to step down to 5 or less

Please re-read my post, because it answers all of your first post questions.

I was merely saying, maybe somewhat lengthy, yes I did look at other logitechs, BUT I would prefer another mouse with similar button count instead of 'downgrading'.

So I'm still looking for a mouse with loads of buttons (not necessarily a logitech), that doesn't look like Frankensteins monster.

Well this is my mous and I had this one for about a year now and I have even bought one for my mother and father and I think another for my brother. It is a good mouse and has lasted longer than the other two optical eyed mice that I have ever used on my computers.

I have the MX Revolution and there is a keystroke assignment option for any of the buttons except the left and right, including the middle one. Unless I'm missing something? SetPoint version 4.24.99. I've only had it since Christmas, but it's worked fine so far.

After uninstalling and reinstalling a clean 4.4 SetPoint once again, just to see if you are right...the button works again. No need to get anything else then, sorry for the false alarm.

Redeyes, what I meant is that you cannot assign the typical wheel-pressing function to the wheel, or any other button. With the script, you can assign any standard mouse button, and any Logitech special function of any mouse to any button (except mouse1/2, and scrolling up/down).
