You're implying some sort of moral absolutism here, based on a modern Judaeo Christian belief structure. Ancient peoples did NOT think as we do, what you find morally repugnant does NOT apply to ancient peoples, and quite frankly I am unsure about what evidence you are using here, that there was some sort of massive cultural shift within cultures, to create a cross cultural objective viewpoint. If you think further on, what exactly do you regard as 'fall of civilisation' anyway, since most civilisations break up, splinter, but then form branches and offshoots. Rome, the Vatican, is still the centre of the Holy See, which controls one of the most populous religions in the world!

you really need to look at more history, and try and come up with some actual 'evidence' to validate your statement, scientifically!

heres the base of my reflection :

every culture/society starts with religious beliefs (you name it).
at the very core, a religion serves to give a hygiene of life. its the real base of the health care.
whatever you say, sex is one of the fastest way to propagate illnesses. to avoid thoses propagations, choose one wife/husband, and stay with.

a society is not eternal.
and when the society grows and takes age, people feel the end coming. its the collective inconscious. they live their life and have fun and all without thinking to tomorrow. carpe diem uh... they do that because there wont be a large amount of tomorrows.
one of the most fun is sex.



about all of the sexual deviations, of course, they happen at every era, every cultures, but they are not most of the population. and when they are most or all the population, the end is very near.

Post apolcalypic Sci-Fi often deals with or is based around concepts that appear in this discussion. The original comment may have been frivolous, but the general discussion definitely falls under the genre

Actually, when the end is near, sex drive would be lower due to increased stress and worry Decadence is a result of increased wealth and growth, not a symptom of decline. Edit: oh, and in the case of a militaristic society sex is more common as it is the duty of the nation to grow itself to provide workers and soldiers for the state at an ever increasing rate. The quickest way to do that is to force all women to have sex with as many partners as possible to give a higher chance of pregnancy.

I think sexual deviancy, if you want to call it that since it's all subjective to the culture anyway, is a result of human creativity. You don't see zebras using whips and and scented jellies because they are not sentient. Humans are curious and creative creatures and those traits spill into everything, even our sexual activities. It's the doctrine of a culture that decrees what's morally below the line.
