One problem with questions like this, is I could name several characters from Sci-Fi books, and the huge majority of people's reactions will be "Who? From what?" That's one of the reasons I picked R. Daneel. At least he's well known.

And for whatever reason, characters in Sci-Fi books tend towards not having as much depth, emotion, and empathy as those in fantasy. I can think of many, many great fantasy characters from books.

...Maybe it's just my book selection.

Books- Kenneth Chinran and Kendra Pacelli from the FreeHold novels by Michael Z.Williamson

And Joachim Steuben from David Drakes Slammers novels. A totally rat-bastard stone killer. Great character.

Movies- Han Solo And Chewie,

Television- Garibaldi, G'kar, Londo, Sheridan, hell pretty much the entire cast of B5. Kirk.

Go for the ones you like Roger, who cares if they are not well known.

I have to agree. Citing characters that are only from well known movies and television programs gets boring sometimes. If talking about books leads more people into expanding their horizons, then I'm all for it.

With that being said, my selection isn't exactly my all time single favorite (it's hard to choose), but is instead on my list of favorites. Also, he isn't from a movie, show, or a book. I doubt this will cause anyone to expand their horizons, but the series made quite an impression on me at a young age. So one of my favorite science fiction characters has to be...Roger Wilco from the Space Quest series of games from Sierra (back when they actually had good games).

Some of my other favorite characters from scifi books are Ender Wiggin (if you don't know, go find out...you won't be sorry), Daniel Boone Davis from Robert Heinlein's book "The Door into Summer", Clifford "Kip" Russell from "Have Spacesuit, Will Travel" (also by Heinlein) and the duo Alex Benedict and Chase Kolpath from the Jack McDevitt series of books (A Talent for War, Polaris, and Seeker). From TV and movies...well, most of the ones on my list have already been said, so I don't need to repeat, and as for the others...maybe later.

All I ask, the heaven above, and the road below me. -Robert Louis Stevenson

It's an open question, i mean the whole subject... but think about it, people generally think of tv or movies first.
