| DON'T OPEN THAT!! | For the Anime Heads like me: Vexille(Spoilers) I recently watched the anime that was flashing on the banners here awhile ago called Vexille. I'm kinda at a cross roads with it. While the action and the art were top notch like most new anime theses days with their mix of Cg and 2d art the story felt very warmed over EX-Machina style. The plot was almost the same except for a few key differnces and some added juicy bit that were pretty slick it was still a story about a Mad man and the use of his company to take over the world by turning everyone into cyber organic slaves. I think the only saving grace was the complete sacrifice of Japans citizenry to keep the cyber plague from spreading. Don't get me wrong I liked it over all and it is watchable but I just wish Anime would get on with some better story telling. I read Manga online and I'm reading this series called Red Eyes- HOT DAMN!! now that needs to be made into a series or something. it's got everything from a world war and political intrigue I mean you get your mindless aggression in their too but man its a very involved story especilly knowing how all the nations came about and stuff. Ah well I guess anime is in the same rut as cinema, too many ideas that have been donebefore and no true creativity to speak of since their making the money they want any way. For the longest time I'd sworn off anime too and I think I may be sinking back into that dark place especially if Black Lagoon lets me down. Thoughts on Vexille if you've seen it or Anime just in general. |

| Still Alive | I got about an hour into it before I had to turn it off . . . had to get some sleep I still have to get back to it at some point I liked what I saw, but yeah it's no masterpiece, though pretty art usually makes up for crappy stories as far as I'm concerned . . . for example: I liked The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen the movie sucked but the aesthetics were great (for the most part) |

| Project Lead on SFM Film | I watched Vexille a few weeks back. The art work in it is top notch. But the story was pretty crappy, they did not even explain how Japan ended up with no hill and where all the land mass had gone, just a barren Desert, with one large shanty town where Tokyo use to be. I think the first half of the film was good, but after the team arrived in Japan, it just went down hill. You also did not get enough time to get to know Vexille Team mates that bought it at the dock. I don’t get to watch Anima as much as I like, but the recent stuff does not have the same great stories as some of the films form ten years ago. I keep meaning to pick up Ghost in the Shell 2 as keep seeing it in the Bargain bin. |

| SFM Obsessed | Odd I thought Vexville was Korean... either way it's just another singularly romp that doesn't hold up it's written end. I find Satoshi Kon has a better handle on characters and higher level concepts I just wish that he would get around to SF singularity material. Though Paprika came close... Anyways, please avoid talking about pirated material (reading manga online). The TOS and all. |

| Well, I usually avoid pretty movies (especially anime), that are crappy. Simply because it vexes me to see that the producers, artist, and animators put all that time, talent, and money into story that just isn't any good. It's almost as if they didn't even read the script in the first place. Take The Spirits Within, I was sorely disappointed by the end of that one. It was pretty but no real story. The same could be said about Wing Commander, or Battle Field Earth, and a few others. However in those instances, it seems as though the studios went where they wanted to go. As the movies were nowheres near as good as what they were originally adapted from. What I think is that we as artist, (writers, designer, etc.) should have a stronger say in how our visions are developed. As for Vexille, I'll try to check it out tonight, let you know something soon: Also: I've been trying to remember the name of an anime, one I saw as a child. In fact it's the very first one I saw. It involved a guy that had a very nice one-man spaceship, which when he was within a planet's atmosphere, he'd jump out and ride on top of it like a surf board. He could also clone himself with a device on his belt, and he used two batons holstered to his legs as weapons. Does anyone know that one? I've been looking for it since I was 7. |
