I am looking for a very good Lightning Bolt tutorial for max 9.

renderable spline and some nifty glow, gets you a good way there... care to elaborate a tad more about the nature of the bolt you actually wanna do !?

I wish to put some frighters going thru a Thunderstorm.

To make the animation easier (and I suppose you are trying to do something like the air chase sequence from X-Men 2, right?) You could use also 2D textures on a plane and some flash of light (you could animate the intensity of your lights)...
Or, like aszazeroth said, a simple spline can do the job...

You could always add them in post-production. I've added the electric bolts over the engines of a Matrix hovercraft frame by frame, and the result was really good!
