^Aye, that's what I meant.

I think its a bit of a pity the manufacturers don't make such outlandish stuff these days. The Nikon 6mm Fish changed the way people looked at photo's, it would be great to get a product like that again.

That's true. The 6mm Fisheye is one of a kind, really... so cool!

A few "look what we can do" lenses pop up from time to time. The 1700mm f/4 Zeiss for example. And I'm tempted to put the 200-500 2.8 at least partly in that category. A few photo agencies and a handfull of rich bastars will buy this... that's about it I'd say (or CIA, FBI and the rest of the alphabet...).

You forgot NASA and National Geographic- they had a lot of Nikon bodies and lenses custom made way back when.

Yeah, the Zeiss Sonnar is a bit of a crazy beast- like you say it's a case of "here's a blank cheque- make something mental!"

Nice- which tripod are you using?

I just ordered a couple of new bits and bobs for myself- got a Manfrotto 190XPRO and a 460MG head on the way, and a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW to stuff it all in.

Think at least some of next months pay will be heading towards a teleconverter- the Canon Extenders are looking mighty nice....

It's a reproduction of a manfrotto MA 055 ... same design, just as sturdy - twice as heavy. I bought this before I got the DSLR (for the Fuji S6500fd that was) and didn't really have a clue then.

I'm not happy with it, it's too heavy and "bulky" for my taste (only two 'extruder' elements). Thus I mainly use it for makros and stuff in the garden.

Decent carbon tripods are just waaaaay too expensive though ... so I thought about replacing this with a real Manfrotto. Or maybe save a while and get a Velbon Sherpa...

Even I as a Nikonian have heard that the Canon tele converters are said to be pretty good ... I guess that means something.

Well, I'll let you know how I find the 190XPRO- it's supposed to be a good compromise between sturdiness and weight- it also has the ability to reverse the center column, and "fold" over to a boom-type tripod- great stuff for Macro work. Maximum height is about 1700mm, minimum about 110mm.

Hopefully it's going to be there when I get in from work tonight, so I can have a quick play.

The only problem with the Canon Extenders is that they'll only work with the 70-200 f4L, they dont work with the EF-S lenses (of which I have the 17-85mm IS) but then I guess I'd use the 70-200 if I needed longer with that lens anyway, and besides- 400mm @ f8 sounds pretty appealing either way....

Also had a play with the Tamron 90mm 2.8 the other day, first time I've had a chance to give it an airing- it's brilliant!

Yes, the Tamron really is magnificent. I am still amazed how shap it is... you'll definately enjoy this lens. It's one of my favourites for sure.

Concerning the tele converters... It wouldn't make sense on the 17-85 if you ask me. The only lenses that I'd want a TC on is either a tele- or a makro-lens.
Since you're going for a 2x converter... you'll have to consider two things. a) Autofocus might be a "nope" and b) be prepared to have to stop down to f/10 (or more) to get sharp images (again)...

To "regain" the sharpness of my Sigma on the TC I have to stop down to f/8, f/11 if possible. Which is a real bummer, 420mm at f/5.6 wouldn't be too shabby otherwise.
