The Canon Extenders support full USM AF on all the 70-200 lenses.

I'm just really glad I didn't go for the Canon 60mm macro EF-S lens- that would have torpedoed any Extender plans.

I'm going to give it more thought, but right now, I'm thinking the 2x would be fine for the sort of think I'd need a longer range for.

Incidentally, no tripod- bastard post service.

Nah, the AF problem is another. At f/8 most AF system reach the limit of what they can do. On most non-proffessional Nikon cameras AF doesn't work at f/8 anymore. And I think it's the same for Canon ... and it it'd still work - it's acuracy will suffer.

One of the reasons I went for a 1.4x converter... 2x is (imho) only suitable for very fast fix focals.

Hmmm, well I'll check it out in a store before committing 100% to the purchase, but I'm pretty sure the ring-USM system in the 70-200mm series (there's 4 of them, two @ f4, and 2 @ f2.8- I have the f4 non-IS version) will be up to it for most things, and there's full-time manual override for when its not quite there.

It's not the USM it is the camera's autofocus sensor. At f/8 most of them fail, it's simply too dark for them.

Don't worry, I don't sit it a tent for hours waiting for the perfect bird picture. When one of them happens to sit still for a while I'll grab a few shots. A decent bird picture has a certain satisfaction...

Don't forget to give me some infos about that tripod one you have gotten to use it.

These are really well done. I especially like the key in the door image.
